You can get varied responses on filters which you can read by going through the UHH search feature at the top of the forums web page. I use UV filters for additional protection of the lens' front glass which I have been removing when shooting. I also shoot using Circular Polarizer filters which are great on bright sunny days for reflections and a deepening on a sky's color. I buy B+H filters. Hoods I recommend Canon. 2 non Canon hoods I bought do not fit as easily as my Canon hoods. Try B&H for the filters and hoods.

Please forgive me if I'm asking a question that has already been discussed. My husband and I are purchasing this camera for a gift for our daughter but we can't decide which lens to get. I am aware that it all depends on what she is taking pictures of, she likes almost everything- Sunsets, the moon are her favorite but she is also into Landscapes, animals, birds, plants, flowers, to name a few. She's not into portraits or weddings. She has decided on the Canon 80D. However, we don't know which lens kit to go with.
I have read where many people do not like "kit" lenses but to start out will these be good?
Which lens will give her better image quality, sharpness . She doesn't mind changing lenses for we have a Nikon D50 with several lenses she has used. We also know she will need more than one or two lenses over time. Higher power zoom, macro etc. but for now we are hoping one of these kits will be great for her.
The lenses from the two different kits are the 18-135m( EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens, which offers a 28.8mm equivalent focal length. Uses NANO USM autofocus system, which combines ring-type USM and STM focusing mechanisms) vs the second kit- APS-C-format DSLR with the standard zoom EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens and the telephoto zoom EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens. (a 28.8-88mm equivalent focal length range.). OR we can get the body if you think there is a lens out there that will be better than one from either of these two kits.
If you don't want another discussion on this can you please provide me links where this has been discussed or reviewed by either yourself or others that you trust- I would really appreciate it.
Also, we've never used filters, just a hood, I can research out the filter types but would like to know which brand you like.
Please forgive me if I'm asking a question that ha... (show quote)

The suggestion to buy refurbished equipment from Canon's website is a good one. My only "however" is if you can be patient Canon has additional 15% off sales on their refurbished equipment throughout the year and that is a nice deal. You still get their 1 year warranty and they do still go over the equipment before they send it to you, so if you can wait this is a consideration. I have purchased their refurbished products and have good experiences. Sign up on their website for their sales and always check under the refurbished category otherwise you will go directly to new equipment. Best of luck.

Nice combination of the color in the petals and the green stem, on your background. Nice planning.

I used my 24-70 2.8L II for this day's shooting and did get close to fill the frame with a fast shutter speed to compensate for wind and being hand held. I can't say it is not me with hand or shutter shake, plus I'm bending forward, but I don't think so. I'll just continue to try. I am amazed with some of the crispness of the flower submissions. Obviously it can be done by someone. Thanks for your observations.

The first three are what I call soft focus. My Canon 80D does this all the time with close-ups like these and I have been unable to overcome it.

Thank you for your suggestion, I do hear what you are saying. The cropping is not always done in post, it happens deliberately when I'm shooting the original image trying to exclude distractions - other flowers too close, dead petals from other flowers, bare spots. But I also crop for the same type of distractive reasons in post as well. I can't alter these plants in a public venue so I compromise. I also know one of my settings cropped further (automatically) when I converted to JPEG which I found out how to control after these images were submitted.
I will keep your observation in mind; my preference is the whole flower with space and a soft background also. Thanks again.

Good images, but...............cropped much too tight, give 'em a bit more space. In other words, show the whole flower. I DARE anyone to differ!

Thank you. I use ON1 as a standalone, but will look into your suggestion with ON1.

Nice images. In a program like Lightroom or Photoshop you can adjust the images to compensate for the harsh lighting.

Soften the light as in using a diffuser? I'd like the ability to hold a diffuser to do that but holding the camera to prevent camera shake is necessary for me and using a tripod in some places in the "public" garden becomes challenging.
My f stop was mostly 3.2 to blur the background but tried to compensate by using 1/1000 shutter speed. (plus there is the wind moving the flower) Maybe next time I will start at 3.2 and skipping stops try smaller apertures. I definitely want better sharpness but keeping background distractions to a minimum is also my goal. Being in a public setting I can't rearrange their property.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Images were previously sent in Photo Gallery but not available to everyone, would appreciate critiques. I know the time of day was not ideal; the setting was noon time with strong light overhead. Thanks.

Thank you, the first image did come out with good color without being false looking. If you can get to the NYBG in the Bronx, for about the next week the peony bushes in front of the conservatory will be blooming but their season is coming to an end. The row of different peonies has to be a few hundred feet long at this spot in the garden. These were herbaceous bushes, the tree peonies were blooming about 2 weeks ago.
