What a wonderful surprise/gift this must have been. I'm willing to bet that this family never thought they would see their camera, let alone their vacation pictures again.

In the days of film, Orlando Sentinel photographers would store their film in coolers in the trunks of their cars to protect it from the blistering Florida summer heat. And air travel was complicated as we asked for hand checks on the film so it couldn’t be damaged by the x-ray machines.

Today, delicate film is nearly gone and our images are recorded digitally on disks that are apparently nearly indestructible based on the story of a long-lost, waterlogged camera.

Photographer and diver Markus Thompson was diving off of a wharf in Deep Bay, British Colombia near Vancouver when he found a corroded and battered camera. The Canon EOS 1000D obviously was never going to make photos again.

But Thompson did pull out the camera’s SD memory card, cleaned it up and put it into a card reader. And it worked. There were about 50 photos from a family vacation from a year earlier.

It is not unusual for a memory card to survive a run through the laundry or a drop into a puddle, but this was certainly an extreme example of saving photos. Thompson used his Google+ account to spread the word about the photos and the family was quickly found. Their photos are back with them and Canon Canada has offered to replace their “severely weathered” camera free of charge. And even though there was no failure of the SD card, SanDisk is offering up some free cards to their newest favorite customers.

This is a great argument for ALWAYS putting the strap around your neck. If you drop the camera this way, you're going to follow it down.

Yes, this is the safest way, but I find the strap, around my neck, uncomfortable. I wrap the strap around my wrist, especially when shooting around water. I do need to buy a lens strap though. Lost one a couple weeks ago. couldn't do anything but watch the current carry it away. :-( :-(

When I saw this I thought of you. I've seen cams attached to dolphins, but never a gator. If you'll never been to Gatorland, you should check it out. It's really neat. There's gators, crocks, birds, and lots more.

Great picture. Better shot with a camera than a gun any day.It looks like they sense your presence. How long before they took off?

Numbers 1 & 2 are nice, if you are shooting a commercial shot for the maker of Polar Bear Snuggies.

Number 3 is the hands down "money shot". This is the image that would be juried into any PPofA print show, numbers 1 & 2 (while nice snaps) would not be so honored.

Number 3 is the only one that is all about the real subject, with the pathos and internal energy only found in "zingers"!

All are nice, but I have to agree with Mooseeyes, #3 is all about the subject. In this case the baby, and a beautiful baby he is.

Thanks for sharing. There are no pelicans in Idaho and these shots seem so much more personal than something from National Geographic. That may be one of the best things about Hedgehog -- the fact that friends can share photos with other kindred spirits.

I quite agree with you about sharing photos with others of like minds. There is so much joy in seeing something of beauty and trying to capture a lasting memory of it in a picture and then sharing it with others.

Thank you all, for your comments and kind words. Thank you gwong1 for the web site. It's one that I had seen. Mahma, thank you for the link for reporting banded birds. I actually ran across this site last night but because I couldn't give a full idenity to the numbers on the band, I sent them the first two pictures and location in hopes that they could tell me something. so far,I haven't heard from them. NOw that I know that the ones from the Gulf area have colored bands, I still hold hopes of hearing something regarding his capture/rescue. Will let everyone know if I find out anything.
