Why, thank you! Yes, I do have the time. I guess you’re completely unaware of Social Isolation mandates still in effect in many states. But of course, you appear to be ignorant and in denial about a number of things. Hmm, sounds like the leader of a certain major world power. Friend of yours? This all makes you a real "special case." Get a clue ... and a life. Farewell.

More to the point, it’s far from clear that "they know everything there is to know about IR photography." But they, at this time, do have a nice selection of free articles on the subject. There are other useful websites with plenty of such articles, and members can endlessly add them in this thread. However, please remember, as was written in the initial post, that this Topic solicited some basic guidance on behalf of a sketch artist who is the son of a "friend" of the OP.

I didn’t see any ambiguity in the OP’s post. And the tone of your response didn’t come off as friendly advice. There seemed to be a lot of “attitude” to it.
Yes, SuperflyTNT, it is true that not everyone, such as yourself, will perceive the ambiguity, but I’m sufficiently confident in my language skills to know that some will. You need to carefully re-read precisely what I actually wrote. Besides, I only specified this ambiguity AFTER the OP’s rude reply.

By the way, did you actually bother to read my post of 08:45 hours? It was a comment to another member’s point. I find it fascinating that you exclusively construe the tone of this to not "come off as friendly advice".

Again, that post was in the context of lauding one of User ID's points. In reading a limited sample of your posts, I find that your prose appears to consist of a disproportionately high frequency of "tonal problems." But please don’t feel that the following is necessarily directed at you exclusively, but there are at least a few members who will find a way to "read into", i.e. unjustifiably extrapolate just about anything written as being done so in a snarky and/or rude and/or snide manner. The quality of "never giving the benefit of the doubt" does not exist in such people. So you tell me, please, are you one of them? Please do not bother replying if you’re unable to answer a simple Yes or No.

Thank you for your insightful comment!

There are webinars on www.singh-ray.com website that have information on IR Infra Red just sign up and you can watch them.
First, Welcome to the Hog, Karen! Second, I see you’re an employee of Singh-Ray Camera Filters. You may want to review the UHH rules regarding under what circumstances (or in which sections,) one can or cannot post commercial and self-promotion materials.

And to acknowledge your post, YES, there are! I recently viewed live two given by George Wilson on B&W IR photography; however, the scope of his presentations are likely over the head of the subject, a "sketch artist," introduced in the very first post as the entire reason, the impetus, for the OP to create this particular topic.

What's the matter? Don’t like being called out? Too proud to acknowledge YOUR own hostile post directed at me? Not "man enough"? OR are you in complete denial? Wouldn’t be the first time on this forum. I recommend that you take a deep breath, and then fess up, get it over with, and all will be right.

It doesn't need to spend lots of money to buy new camera for IR photography. I converted my point & Shot compact camera my self at home to a full spectrum IR camera with different IR wave length filters. I am very happy with what I can do with this camera and the result!
A few sample right here with 590nm; 720nm IR filter, I also have 685nm & 850nm IR filters. It's fun!

B&W IR cameras need not be expensive . I just last month bought a used cheapo Vivitar compact camera(F126) off EBay for just $25 . 14mp even . It was converted to IR by seller . Although it is a simple compact camera lacking DSLR controls nonetheless it makes cool photos . IR is lotz of fun and a neat look .
25 bucks. Really! That amazes me.

I think the artist is having 2nd thoughts, cost and learning curve, and all that jazz. I had offered him a Fuji x-A3 to augment his art, and subsequent to that, he enquired about I.R. So far he is still non-commital. I won’t be pushing the issue, but I have forwarded a lot of Hogg info, to him, thanks again , folks..
Make sure you forward to him YOUR incredibly defensive response to my penultimate post.

So..... You disagree with his first point. AND YOU DONT PAY ATTENTION. Go back and re-read my opening statement. The sketch artist wants to use I.R. It is his interest in it, not mine. I really appreciate the informative and POSITIVE COMMENTS by most here. Thanks again............RJM
So THIS RESPONSE is the FIRST thing you think of AFTER I made two useful posts? Your reply is unnecessarily nasty and rude. I’m trying to help you, NOT attack you! I guess it never occurred to you that within the sentence, "A friend of mines' son is just a terrific sketch artist, and thinks that a IR digital camera might be something USEFUL to him ... ," it is not absolutely clear, at least to me, WHO the subject of the verb "thinks" is. Are you referring to your friend or his son? I’m not criticizing the potential ambiguity you created; I was simply suggesting that you resolve it either directly or indirectly. I guess that’s asking too much of you.

But go ahead, donald, be that way. Just interpret every picky little word as a slight. OBVIOUSLY, it never occurred to you that I was attempting to get you to flesh out more details about this sketch artist, as User ID did make at least one good point.

... The following is an art world insider’s advice:

1. IR is a specialty involving expense and a learning curve. But it’s not especially beneficial to the sketch artist. The artist will find more inspiration and examples of rendering styles in the ubiquitous “art filters” that are found in most editing software and are also built into most digital cameras. Best thing is that the expenses and learning curve for these filters is verrrrry low.

2. I’ll be crucified for saying this, but IR imaging is, for the sketch artist, just one more “art filter” amongst so many others ... but it is the least simple to use, and the least economical, by a loooong shot, by a moon shot.
... The following is an art world insider’s advice... (show quote)
I disagree with your 1st point as it is easy to operate an IR-converted compact camera (with an internal long-pass IR filter cutoff >700 no,) but as to your 2nd one, I believe you raise a good point, User ID! From digit-up's posts, it’s not even clear whether this sketch artist himself is actually interested in IR photography.

Yes, it’s a good book. I bought it back in 2010 new. Since then, it has gone out of print and just 2-3 years ago, when a non-photographer friend of mine looked to buy it as a gift for me, the lowest price he could find was $187; but according to the Amazon link you provided, this price has come down to ~$43 - $60.

I'll never understand why someone would purchase a cell phone because of the camera. If one wants a camera, there are plenty from which to choose. Some less expensive than a cell phone.

Another thing I'll never understand is people wanting to compare cell phone cameras with "real" cameras. They are two different entirely different tools.

Magnificent! Thanks for the info ............ RJM
Among other question for "your" sketch artist, is he more interested in monochrome (i.e. B&W) Infrared imaging (typically comprised of "pure" IR by employing a long-pass filter with a wavelength cutoff >~700 nm,) or color IR imaging? The latter can be comprised of a combination of IR and visible light (abbreviated 'VZ') using direct capture only or IR +/- VZ in combination with post-processing.

I could show you examples from my collection, but here are a couple of URLs that run the gamut:
http://www.photoir.net/infrared-gallery/
https://maxmax.com/gallery?i=DSCF3012

Here is a reference pertaining to 6 different Infrared films, each with example images:

and more of the last type shown: https://flickr.com/photos/158461930@N07/albums/72157706514544021/

Or if this sketch artist is more inclined to draw portraits and nude forms, there exist books such as this one:
