If the blades are straight, then the junctures are rather sharp, then diffraction giving rise to star burst. My Kern macro Switar has 11 curved blades, never was able to achieve this effect. The junctures are smoother. Yes, I can see it in live-view magnified.

The corners formed by the edges of the lens diaphragm can produce a star burst around a bright pin source. Many lenses can produce this effect under different settings. These two examples were taken using the Summicron Symmetric IV 35mm/f 2.0 mounted on SONY a7R. Notice these were captured under entirely different illuminations but both are set at f8.0, the optimum f-stop to achieve effort for this lens - smaller the light source the sharper the burst.

Thanks for the input; only one adapter available and only for Leica.

I think they discontinued ALPA to E mount. If I have a second one, would be glad to let you have it at cost.

Just my personal opinion but too much resolution might result in your being disappointed in your older lenses and make you feel like starting another round of expensive investment. I stopped at 24MP for that reason.

Sorry I must have bought the last one. If had a second one would let you have it at cost.

Agreed that 24MP is a sweet spot. Leonardo da Vinci preached "soft" edges for painters. Notice his paintings, subject is not really sharp but embeds many, many layers of mirco-contrast; while the background is often sharper but with much muted lightness.

The coatings on older lenses are not as efficient as the newer multi-layer coated lens; therefore have lower transmission efficiency. There is a Zeiss tech note where they compared a 1930 Planar with an exact copy but with their new T multi-layer coating. The "sharpen" is night and day.

Thanks for posting this comparison. Is there a legacy lens section on the Uglyhedgehog? I have been considering purchasing either the Sony A7ii or the A7rii. I currently have the Sony NEX 6 and 7 and have quite a few legacy lenses. Question is would the A7Rii's 42 MP be a waste on these legacy lenses? Would the A7ii's 24 mp be more suited to use with old glass?. What prompted you to purchase the A7Rii?

No AA filter on the R's. I would go for the 24MP but it has the AA filter.

I agree with the Kern macro Switar lens: simply magnificent. I own that lens and unfortunately it only fits my ALPA camera (35mm film).

Metabones manufactured ALPA to,,,,, mounts, check their website. Kipone also but not on par with Metabones quality.

Not in every shot but the Summicron has not only superior color and contrast but the amazing ability to make you feel like you are in every plane of distance even when the background is out of focus. It took me a long time to understand this but it is uniquely there.

You have to live with it, them, for a while; especially post processing and print with different papers, to see the differences.

I didn't mean to precipitate this .... Please Leitz vs. Zeiss, and check my latest posting the FINAL in Gallery.

Learning to store attachment for a detailed inspection by your audience seems to be one big miss from the entire process.

OK, still learning. Thanks

Yourself going through the process.

Each lens gives me a different base on which I can post process to my final idea. Of course, each lens has obvious restrictions, such as field of view and magnification factor, but each "draws" differently. I should keep better notes on each image capture.

I remember reading that Ansel Adam had volumes of notes on each negative, including lens characteristics (flare, focal length, filter, etc). He also said that clicking the shutter is only half of the work. I want to print my idea of what I saw and different lens helps - I think.

I confess this has not been a rigorous comparison but it was fun. I did learn from my mistakes and the editors were most helpful in consolidating my postings, many thanks.

This final set of images was all captured with the SONY a7Rii, purchased on Black Friday. Leitz and Zeiss lens are different not, which is better.
