Not sure if it relevant to you, I trying to make the same decision going from a D5300, at first I was going to get a used D800, after reading all the reviews realizing now that the D750 seems to be one of the very best with AF i'm 75 so that might be more important to me.

The D5300 is a great camera, I'm using a the Nikkor 18-14, 55-300 and a 50mm 1.4 I use the 18-140 the most a very good lens and can be bought in a package Nikon - D5300 Digital SLR Camera with 18–140mm VR Lens Best Value.
I haven't used it much but I'm impressed with the video it takes.

A good move up would be a D5300 a lot more than the D5200 if you are try to keep cost down. I use the D5300 with the new 18-140 lens that I use the most.

Thanks Bret, I haven't taken pictures for years. I'm starting to realize with the higher mega pixel cameras and light room, a wider lens gives me more to work with

I am a amateur photographer as well, I upgraded my D5100 to D5300, incredible camera but I wish now I had upgraded to a FX camera.
