Thoughts? I have lenses that will fit a 7100, but I am a very amateur photographer, if that! Is it worth it?

I am a amateur photographer as well, I upgraded my D5100 to D5300, incredible camera but I wish now I had upgraded to a FX camera.

You'll get better low light performance and lots more megapixels to play with. It's a very good camera and they are less than $950 new at Amazon now, which tells me the D7200 or whatever they are going to call it, can't be far away. Rumors have it arriving sometime in January.

Why do you wish you went FX Tracy?

The D90 is one Nikon's better mid-range bodies but there have been a lot of changes in sensors, AF, metering, and internal processing. If an upgrade is in your budget then I'd strongly consider it.

One positive is that the functions on the D7100 will be close to the functions on the D90. There will be a learning curve, but it will not be major.

I've had a D90 for 5 years and tested both the D7100 and D610 as a replacement. Didn't think the IQ improvement was worth the D7100 at the time although it did give better high ISO performance. The D610 IQ and High ISO were distinctly better but fell short in the AF area.
Considering the D750. I understand they make it easier to use your DX lenses but you will lose mp's in the resulting image.

If you're still learning, the D90 has more than sufficient capability to give you excellent results. I'd wait to upgrade until you begin to realize limitations from your D90 and understand what you specifically want from new technology that will improve your results.

I have issues of Popular Photography magazine that have test reviews of the D90, D7000, and D7100. The D90 and D7000 have better color accuracy than the D7100. The D90 and D7000 have Sony made sensors. The D7100 has a sensor made by Toshiba. The autofocus speeds are almost identical. Cameras with more pixels can be more demanding. Any camera shake can be more obvious with higher resolution sensors because the individual pixels are smaller. That's one of the reasons Nikon published the 20-page technical guide for the D800. Do a search for it online. They talk about how blur is more obvious with high resolution sensors. The D7100 has an even higher pixel density than the D800.

Absolutely!!! I went from a D80 to a D7100 about 18 months ago and haven't looked back! I tried a couple full-frame Nikons while my D7100 was in for repair (I dropped it and messed up the autofocus...YIKES!...but all is well now) and didn't like them nearly as well for what I photograph. Love my D7100 for grandchildren, sports, wildlife, and newborn photography. Go for it...you won't regret!!!

Go for it you won't be sorry!!
One of my D300's died awhile back, I was looking at full frame, then figured out only one of my lenses would utilize the FF at the full mp, decided on the D7100, saved money and get great images.
all the macros taken with the D7100 and a nikkor 200mm macro

Someone asked the same question about a week ago. Go for it. Major improvements. Consider getting a refurb and saving a few hundred $$.

In the past I have always advised those owning a camera wishing to update to evaluate what they need before spending money. If the D90, a great tool, is not fulfilling your needs or style of photography my answer is yes, it is time to update.
The D7100 is technologically speaking a much more advanced camera than the D90 but it will be very difficult for you or anyone else to tell the difference between the files of one and the other. A new camera could make your work easier but it will never make anyone a better photographer.
If your D90 is not doing what you expect from it then it is time to update.

I have a Nikon D70s and upgraded to a D7100 and love it, All Nikon lenses for DX and Full Frame are compatible and it has a great ISO range. I now use the D70s as a backup and for my wife. The D7100 is much easier on batteries although I still recommend carrying at least 2. It has 2 SD cards which is handy even though the camera will support all current available sizes and shooting in RAW with a 32 mb card I can get 590 shots on each card. My next camera will probably be a full frame but the D7100 will be my backup camera and the D70s will remain the wife's.
