I just got back from a photo shoot where I shot everything on a tripod with a remote shutter release. I am disappointed in the focus--just not what I'm used to getting from my Canon 70-200 f4, especially considering a tripod and shutter release were used. I read that there can be differences between how a camera focuses using liveview vs the viewfinder. Anyone with experience of this? Is it true? Is there a way to compensate? I was using autofocus in conjunction with liveview in this shoot. Camera = 6D.

Live view uses Contrast Detection and the viewfinder uses Phase detection. Phase detection will find the focus faster than Contrast.

From my understanding, phase detection will know which direction to adjust the autofocus whereas contrast will seek back and forth across the focus point before finding the correct focus. Since you were on a tripod, either method will work fine. As has been mentioned, make sure the lens vibration control is set to off.

For anyone who has never traveled to Japan or other countries in the world, the correct pronunciation for Nikon is with a long e like in knee instead of the short i as in night as most Americans say it.

So the correct pronunciation is kneecon. Con is the same in both American English and Japanese.

It is the same pronunciation for All Nippon Airways. Nippon means Japan for the UHH members who do not know that.

AsiaPaul, Interesting reaction from the forum. I appreciate the cultural sharing of information regardless of the intention.

Hi Nanny. Welcome to the UHH forum. It's a great and sometimes entertaining forum. Like all things, everyone will have an opinion. I would recommend that you spend some quality time and do some research. Then go to a camera store to try a few camera's. A good camera store will let you play with them in and around the store. For me, I had my site set on a particular brand for years. When I physically held the camera's, it totally altered my decision and I ended up with a different brand. I think you'll find that all the brands are pretty good. Just know that once you pick a brand and start buying lenses, you want to stay with that brand. Lenses are not cheap and will outlast the camera.

Good luck with your purchase.

To the OP: I understand your frustration. When I got back into photography a few years ago, I started with the cheapest, refurbished camera I could find, which at the time was the Nikon D3000. No frills. But a very nice camera. I still have it. I learned/relearned the basics of photography from a technical point of view; controlling blur, depth of field and graininess. Or, more correctly, Speed, Aperture and ISO. Unlike film, you can dial the ISO setting. I found this the most intriguing option available on DSLR. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Jump in and enjoy the 750. It will be a winner for a long, long time.

either model will work. The D7100 was the first cropped camera model to eliminate the OLPF (Optical Low Pass Filter).

Most of the basic digital camera's today are mini studio's. The lower cost camera's are cheaply made compared to the expense camera's that are made for wear and tear in the field.

I'm thinking of leaving uhh. Not all but most here want to criticize more than encourage. They like to belittle those asking advise. Not everyone here has the same skill level or knowledge base. I started in my early teens if the photographers I talked with had been like a lot of you are I would have quit. Now as a professional photographer and artist I still make time for those who want help or advise. I'm sure many film shooters here had mentors starting out in photography if they had talked to you like many here do would you have been as enthusiastic about photography? I'll get off my soapbox now and leave you with one question where would you be without the help of others? Y first job was with the Boston Globe and I sell through art galleries now on occasion I take a job for friends like weddings or graduations.

I've received some interesting responses where they obviously missed the point. Rather than asking for clarification they attack. It's not worth the response. Human nature, I guess. But I don't let that stop me. Because there are others who are good members.

Have a positive attitude and stick in there with the rest of us who care.

I've found it takes time for BBF to become an instinctive habit. Then, switching between BBF and Shutter focusing may make things worse. When you give your camera to someone to snap a pic of your group, it's a pain to have to explain BBF to them. Bottom line: For "serious" pics with my "good" camera, I use BBF. On my cameras that others may use, I opt for the simple shutter-button focus. Both modes work well.

I've been in the same situation when someone offers to take our picture. BBF takes time to explain.

Look up BlackRapid straps. The double strap is designed to sit on your shoulders with crosscross fasteners across your chest. It works great. You can disconnect one of the straps and use it as a single too.

This post hits home. When I started out, I would get myself into all kinds of situations that had me thinking the camera was messed up.

I use a dual swing strap that connects to the tripod port on the bottom of the camera. Both cameras hang on each side of my body. This makes it very easy to walk and easy to raise either camera for a shot.
