I've been reading DPreview, Cameralabs, Imaging Resource, etc., so I've been getting an idea of what each of these has, and what the professional camera testers have to say. I guess what I'm looking for are some hands on reports from folks here who actually own and use any or all of these three cameras.

I looked at and handled the OMD-EM5 MK ii at Best Buy recently and it seemed like a decent camera. In fact, I liked it a lot, the little time I spent with it. There was also an EM1, but the lens they had on it was stiff and not smooth, so I didn't take any time with it. I didn't see and EM10.

Granted, the EM1 is the flagship with everything, and the EM5 MKii is only slightly less expensive. Should I decide that this is the way I want to go, would I be better off spending the extra $100.00 or so on the EM1 instead of the EM5. Or will the EM10 MKii have pretty much everything that the other two have. What I notice is that it looks like it has fewer controls than the other two, but will the shooting experience be satisfying? This is what I want to hear from "real world" users.

Had the same decision this summer and went with the EM5II over the EM1. The 5II is newer and has some additional features such as HiRez 40MP combined image mode, Live Comp and Live View and some others which are nice. Research on the Olympus site. The image stabilization is also a bit better. Both cameras are weather sealed. The 5II felt a bit small in my hands but adding the Oly ECG-2 grip made it feel perfect in my hands, plus gives you an Arca Swiss L plate to boot. I love this camera, it is incredibly full featured and customizable. But I think the EM1 would be great too. In fact, I plan on buying the EM1mk11 when released to carry 2 cameras in field

Fingers crossed that the firmware update will give the sensor shift capabilities, but I doubt it- the EM5II will hit the buffers hard if they do. If not, I'd suggest you actually handle both before deciding. Either way, I'd suggest getting the 45mm F1.8- the nicest lens I've ever used, and so cheap. Lovely for portraits!

No it will not. This is hardware feature, not software.

I've looked at the EM5II but I like the deeper grip on the EM1,I think it will feel a bit more secure in the hand, thanks for the suggestion

I have the EM5II and added the Oly ECG-2 grip/L-bracket which is Arca-Swiss compatible. It's a 2 piece unit and I usually shoot with the vertical piece removed since it interferes a bit with the articulating screen which I love for tripod and low position shooting. EM-1 does not have this. With this grip the camera feels great in hand, without I'm not sure I would have purchased the camera. I'm 6'0" tall with medium hands. Try it with the grip. Makes all the difference. I also tried the Really Right Stuff L-bracket at the same time, but preferred the Oly.

It just seems like keeping an extra copy in pictures sort of defeats the purpose I have for the images living on an external. I don't want to fill up my hard drive with photos, I like keeping my hard drive very lean and agile. Thus, all master images and their backups reside on large, fast externals.

Minnie, what type of hard drive do you have on your Mac? I'm about to buy a new one, and I'm debating between a 1TB fusion or a 256GB SSD and an external for storage. Figure 256GB maybe sufficient for software and apps and initial download an editing of each photo shoot. However, having a C drive and external for primary storage would seem to complicate backup.

On1 is not a replacement for Lightroom - it is not a parametric editor and must convert from raw to an image file (psd, tiff, jpeg), in order to apply changes, though the Enhance module does many of the same things that LR does. It also does not have the Library/Catalog, but it has a very powerful browser. Lastly, it's Effects module is a very powerful pixel based editor, using much of what is in Photoshop's tools, arranged into fully customizable presets to speed you through many photo finishing tasks. And it has the best masking routines out there. The suite can be called up from LR and it works as a plug in for Photoshop as well.

DXO, is, purely and simply, a work-alike to LR's Development module. It has better lens profiles and can eliminate noise while retaining image content better than any program or approach I have yet seen. It has a volume anamorphosis correction that can sometimes come in handy when using ultra-wide angle lenses. It also is a work-alone converter, but it can write an LR-readable dng filemaking it an excellent plugin to LR.

One more program worth looking into is Capture One. It is very similar to LR, has a rudimentary library, but produces better colors with less effort than LR.

If you have not tried LR/PS, you probably should before you make any decisions. Capture One is the only app of these that I no longer use, but I can still wholeheartedly recommend. If you like (or think you might want) to work with plugins - then it's hard to beat LR/PS for price, functionality and value.

You can download 30 day trials for all of these for free.

Workflow........85% in LR, sometimes 100%. If not entirely in LR and plu-ings, then I send to PS. I do work from virtual copies. It is those virtual copies that are reworked into many more variations of the original and each placed in a designated envelope. Some favored pp'ed copies are, however, sent and sometimes sent often, from the desktop evelop back into LR for further pp refinements before a final "best" is chosen.

I am rather isolated as a LR user and it's tough to learn LR or PS from a book. And, until this recent, and seriously disturbing problem, I have had no problems. Cumbersome as it is, it works. I have two recent LR instrucitional books on the way from Amazon.

Have you tried the Adobe LR tutorials primarily by Julianne Kost. I found these very helpful when new to LR.

It you have a recent version iPad or if considering a new one, that with the new iPencil stylus may serve you well. Not sure how compatible the iPencil is with current version iPads though. Worth looking into.
