Wow, I must be the only guy here who carries only one camera and doesn't think twice about it.

I was there in early August last year. I think July is the peak time for this spot, as most of the wildflowers were gone when I got there and wildfires obscured the view most of the time. This was the least smoky night of my two weeks. I used my 16-35 for this shot, but forget what exact focal length it was. All depends on whether you want to get just the mountain or some foreground as well.

I'll be there in June myself. See you at the top of Steptoe!

True and that was how I meant it too. There is no Bridge without Ps or certain other Adobe products in certain versions.

Bridge is not the same thing as ACR. You can fire up Bridge on it's own any time you want.

I think I am on pretty much every photo processing software email list that exists. Today I received the usual promotion for, in this case, OnOne. The picture attached is to encourage readers to enter a competition. I cannot help but notice that the image is heavily post processed . . . Even by my standards; and I usually have no issues with surrealism. It seems that many of the software producers feature this “look” in their advertising rather than a more “natural” approach. Has this become the new standard for photo processing? Are we likely to see a new generation of photographers who believe more is better?
Each to his own taste. I just think we are being shown a new standard for what a landscape should look like.
I think I am on pretty much every photo processing... (show quote)

Apparently it was in Nat Geo Traveler, Spanish edition. It looks like a typical Photomatix shot... high saturation, land brighter than the sky, not a shadow to be found.

Ultimately it comes down to how much OnOne is willing to pay for a stock image. Clearly they didn't want to fork over big $$$ for a highest-end landscape image, and figured this would be good enough.

You can use Bridge as a freestanding program without opening Photoshop and use ACR from Bridge and never enter Photoshop.

But you can't use ACR without any other program. Stand-alone means someone could go purchase ACR, install it and use it without anything else.

Just checked out the Sean Bagsaw video - it is really great, along with all his other stuff. Sure makes sense. Thank you for sharing that resource.

He's fantastic, isn't he? Bet you're the only person who clicked through and watched it.

I have heard many here state that they use Adobe Camera Raw as a plug-in prior to further editing in Photoshop. I have no real first hand knowledge of this program and it's functions, but I believe Camera Raw to be a basic raw file editor and file conversion program. My question is this: can it be used as a stand alone program to do basic exposure based editing, cropping, file conversions, etc. Frankly 99% of my post processing only requires this type of exposure based editing and I did quite well using Canon's DPP until I bought my Pentax K3. I am now using Raw Therapy on the Pentax DNG files and it's okay, but I'm not really thrilled with it. It just doesn't seem to pull the detail out of the shadows like the Canon software did for me and I'm not sure the de-noise routines do much of anything, at least not that I can tell. I guess I'm thinking that maybe "Camera Raw" might be a big improvement and would appreciate any info or feedback this forum might be able to share on this subject. Good luck and good shooting to all.
I have heard many here state that they use Adobe C... (show quote)

No, it's not a stand alone program. It's an editing tool used by Lightroom and Photoshop primarily to convert raw files to a bitmap that can be edited/exported.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a program to download images from a CF card? I do not want to use Adobe Photoshop CC, so I need a similar program where I can download photos and store them in folders on my computer. Then a program to retrieve them for processing. I don't like the idea of Adobe Photoshop where you have to rent the program and then store the finished pictures on their site.

You don't have to store the finished pictures on their site.

Recently, another member posted a very good photo and attributed the results partly to the nice saturation he had achieved by slightly underexposing the image. He mentioned that he had learned this technique during his Kodachrome film days.

I also used this technique when I used to shoot film and initially did the same in my early days of shooting digital. I never do so anymore and have come to believe, however, that this is not necessary and perhaps counterproductive. In post-processing, it is easy to change exposure and there are many other possibilities to change saturation – not only the saturation and vibrance sliders, but also a combination of adjustments to highlights, shadows, white point, black point, contrast, clarity etc. Also, underexposing narrows the dynamic range that could be achieved by correctly exposing or overexposing (expose to the right).

Am I correct?

You're correct to a point, but exposing to the right isn't always the way to go either, as Sean Bagshaw illustrates in this video. The ideal method for optimal color is nailing the exposure spot-on for each important part of the scene.

Be sure you have a 4 digit pin code for you CC or it will not work to buy gas. Check with the issuer of your Credit Card.

You can just go inside and buy a gas card that will work.

If the scene is 5 miles wide from end to end that would only equate to around 8 pixels per inch. Not even enough to make a good print!

Have you tried PHotoshop CC? It has a Camera Raw filter which is identical to the ACR interface.

That is ACR. ACR can be accessed from Bridge or via the filter menu in PS.

Its just like ACR and PS, ACR is part of PS, but they are 2 totally different/separate programs, just like ACR and LR!

No. The adjustments you can make in ACR you cannot make in PS, and vice versa. You might be able to accomplish something similar, but not with the same controls. With ACR and Lightroom, every single image adjustment you can make in one you can also make in the other, because they're the same image editing program.
