My name comes from my boxer Max and the fact that my son calls him Maxamillion. Max is my most photographed subject and is very patient about it.

I will try to add a few examples. I believe both of these are untouched. please lemme know what you think. Like I said I have played with exposure, lighting, camera controlled saturation and sharpness with the nikon, the canon was right out of the bag.

I've heard that some people have better luck using Chrome and also check the size of your file to make sure it isn't too big.

Today I cornered my husband and a couple neighbor girls that were outside playing to test out studio lights...two umbrella lights with soft boxes on them and a flash fill light for the background. Found out that during the day even with the blinds shut my living room is way to bright for two umbrellas. So used only one on the pictures here. This is just a start for me and wanted to share since I am pleased at what this produced for me. I will try add the settings for each. What fun!
Oh and these are SOOC. I am shooting with D3100. Sure hope these come across to you as I see them on my computer.

These are lovely pictures and I can see you were having fun with it. Love the first and last ones the most. Your husband must be very pleased to have such a nice portrait of himself and the neighbors must be very happy with the lovely pictures of their daughters. Keep posting so I can learn along with you.

DebyG and Bunny-Jean, thank you for taking the time to look at my pictures and comment. I'm looking forward to getting the umbrellas and experimenting with them. And hands and feet won't be the only things I look at when taking pictures--thanks to MWAC

Thank you Captain C--I really appreciate your feedback. The next opportunity I get I will practice using cloudy for my WB. These are the kind of tips that will help me progress.

I have to laugh at what that background does...wings coming out of his head!

Yeah - that has to go. Backgrounds should be in the...well...the background. there, but not dominating.

OK - nice job. The tip to use an umbrella is a good one. One of the characteristics of umbrellas is that they tend to blow light everywhere and in the situation you were in, that is a feature, not a limit. That light does look a bit low. Not horrible, but higher would be better - check the direction of the nose shadow to make sure it has a downward direction and not straight across. And NEVER upward.

To be honest, when I do these kinds of things, I keep the light very close to the camera and almost 36" above the lens. It does make for flat lighting, but it precludes shadows from one person blocking another. It is foolproof. Not dramatic, not cool, but works great for this kind of thing.
A slightly warmer skin tone would be good.

Did I mention the background has to go?

Thank ou very much for looking at my pictures and commenting. If there is a next time--I will control the background! lol I'm slowly attempting to build up my equipment and the next thing will be an umbrella.

I'm going to work on changing the skin tone to make it warmer. Skin tones are an area I need to work on. Could you recommend a site or photographer I could look at to see what a good skin tone looks like?

These are only two pictures that I took a little over a week ago out of about 125. They are the formal portraits and the first I have ever done. There were a lot of people on this forum that gave me hints and advice in order to help me succeed. So now I am asking, did I succeed?

I do have permission to post these pictures and I know that the butterflies in the background look like they are growing out of heads. It was the committees choice of background so I had to go with it.

Please let me know what you think of the exposure and lighting. I learn from the feedback.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post. I'm glad you liked the pictures. The parents and teachers were very happy with them.

Wow, I made it to the end. Guess I might be the last one to kick the horse. What drama, people leaving, no, people not going to C&C anymore, don't post on my thread etc. Hmm....well I think Photoguy was bashed a bit, in a thread in which he didn't ask for critique, which he got anyway, and not constructive critique. Oh well, it happens. Sometimes folks are just so itching to correct a photo that perhaps they don't realize the OP is simply sharing his images. Let's just have a couple of beers and wait for the next episode of "As the Forum Turns." :|

I understand what you are saying but I still don't believe PG was bashed. Quite a few people made positive remarks about photos but he didn't start a new thread about the posters commenting--guess because they were positive. But when a couple (2) made less than glowing comments--he starts a thread complaining about it. So I figure if it is okay to give positive comments, it is okay to give personal opinions.

I know about bashing and what PG got was not bashing. These are some quotes that I received after I asked for help. "When you grow up, maybe just maybe you will understand when people say something to you. Perhaps then too you will have an original thought. Now wipe the snot off your chin, quit getting all indignant and go learn to use a light meter so you don't have to worry about ruining the shots for these people."

As it turned out--the event that I was bashed for taking on and asking for some pointers on lighting it--turned out well. The parents and teachers were thrilled with the girls' pictures. There is a sample on the people photography section at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-25663-1.html

Thank you Dria and Dback4430 for responding to my post. Every little bit that is pointed out to me, I put away for future reference. I am only a hobbyist but I would like to be a good one.

You are right Dria--there is talk of "next year" already!

mwac I apreciate you and your comments, as well as your deep level of talent especialy in an area i bite at mainly photos of people. Im very rusty and the last series of shots i took at the church picnic i took were boring snapshots, not fun photos of people enjoying themselves like your shots. please don't quit just be selective who you respond to. after the julie incident, i stopped offering critiques to newbies untill i saw how they responded to others. less stress and agrivation that way. Don't go you are one of the few friends i got left. the hog without MWAC and Tilde is like a day without sunshine. as for others it is real simple if you dont want critique post in photo gallery, which is where comments like cute dog belong. if you want critique post in photo analysis and also develop tough skin.

Are you folks not getting it--there is NO bashing happening here--only a guy in need of affirmation. Please read his threads and you will see what I am talking about.

I spent a couple hours today looking at all the responses to Photoguy's posts. If there was any "bashing" I wasn't able to find it. Can someone, anyone show me where this "bashing" took place please. If you can show me an example I will apologize and BTW I think Photoguy should continue to post that's beside the point. I just think a portion of the UHH membership is being chastised unfairly. From what I was able to determine by viewing these posts is that Photoguy was actually looking for affirmation rather than critique and of course there is certainly nothing wrong with that but if you don’t specify what you want you may get either or both.

You aren't going to find any bashing Pepper because it didn't happen. I believe that you are correct in your assessment that the OP does not want anything but positive comments but instead of taking the couple of responses that weren't to his liking and ignore them, he has decided to put it out there to the forum to get the affirmation he needs.

I agree about the portion of the forum being unfairly chastised. I have stated here several times that there is NO bashing occurring here. I notice the OP is no longer addressing those of us that haven't jumped on his band wagon. Please don't PM me again OP.

I have been supportive of Photo Guys work and hope he continues to post but hope in the future he doesn't ask for comments or states in the beginning--only positive comments welcomed.
