As soon as I opened this, I wanted to look away...then look back. I couldn't not look at it. I could feel my own fingertips hurting. BRAVO. You managed to elicit this emotional response in me...exactly what good art should do. Love it!

Such kind words ... Thank you

Your work with the color instead of just straight mono, still intrigues me. Always very powerful.

Shine, I knew this was your work just looking at the image and it is excellent. It does convey the story of pain and hardship and you captured this well.

Thank you waltchilds .... Hope you are keeping well....

Powerful image,Shine; It shows the intense agony of pain, the tenseness of muscles and rigidness of position trying to keep in control.

Thank you Carlysue

That's the beauty of it right now. I'm seeing more and more of it (black and white, very little with color) but I don't think it has an actual name yet. I've heard "Gritty black and white", "high contrast" etc. It just has a feel that impacts emotion, but I really haven't heard a specific name for the genre. To me, things that are new and different, especially ones that make you think and feel, are a true art form. I don't know how to do it, and it isn't anything near the style I do (mostly romantic/wedding/family), but it sure doesn't mean that I don't love the heck out of it when it's done well. Pale Pictures (Russ Elkins) is a master of it, and used to offer online tutorials. I think he still does, but not through the old website, I believe you need to contact him directly. If anyone could define it, I would bow to him.

Yes.... A big thank you to Russ Elkins who has given me so much help and inspiration .....a little tough at times!!!!

Shine, a very powerful image indeed !!! The white on the knuckles could be toned down but for the most part is not a deal breaker for me. Over all you have an outstanding image with composition/pose to your processing skills. I know you have many other outstanding images but this one is at the top of your list for one of your best yet. The sadness of the eyes and even though the expression cannot be disclosed for the hand/fist covers the mouth only leaves one to speculate curiously the mystery behind your character. Well done !!!
Dave

Thank you Dave ...
Unusually for me this is not a homeless subject .. He is a photoartist himself .
Having spoken to him at length, I found out he was a sufferer of 'cluster headaches' ... Something I knew nothing about ... I knew nothing about the condition so watched u tube videos and read up on the condition before I began my work on him....
In the UK , most of us including medics are unaware of the condition and the people which have this condition are left to suffer undiagnosed...hence the reflection of pain...
A gross generalisation follows...
Severe headaches ... Occurring 3/4 times a night, equivalent to the pain of childbirth .... Otherwise known as suicide headaches...the subject had broken teeth which have occurred during attacks... No know aetiology or cure... As quoted above 'the pain just doesn't stop'
To reflect this, I over whitened the knuckles to hopefully reflect some kind of pain,... I am glad this has come over in most of the above comments ...
I hope this gives you an idea of the thought behind my processing ...
I am now realising that my work is not just about the subject, but I need to have an understanding of the subject to process as I do...
An interesting journey starting as this is my first 'non homeless character...
Enjoy, and thNk you all for looking in..
Kind regards
Shine
