From the nose up....powerful. The white on the knuckle just draws my attention.

Love the fact that you are doing these with color, it adds a new dimension to the gritty black and whites that we're beginning to see more and more of. I always like it when someone changes things up.
It's also nice that you didn't completely lose the neck, it is there, but subtle. If it were completely gone, then it would just look like a floating head.

Once again, my opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Shine,

Indeed an interesting image with a battle between his face and eyes, with that big fist he has right up front and personal, so to speak. You actually seem to have two pictures in one, so it appears to me. The added color to it is different and not truly a converted color to B&W image. I'm not sure what to think about that. I guess it opens up a completely new path or genre, so to speak, of a partially converted color to B&W image with separating the whites and the blacks, but adding color as well.

That big hand/fist is a tough one. I think we can agree that hands in an image are tough to deal with whether it be in color or B&W. I'm trying to think about this one . . . and perhaps I will come to some kind of conclusion in the future, with more thought, or perhaps 'if I sleep on it' for a while. You have presented an interesting and conflicting new type of image in Post. Thanks for presenting this for observation, thought, and discussion.

Best Regards,
Tom

If that's the case, then I think he accomplished the job of this type of photography. It is SUPPOSED to make you think, and maybe feel uncomfortable.

Only my opinion.... which is basically worthless. Forget I said anything.

Shine your photo is striking and evokes alot of emotion. My view begins with his knuckles and moves to his eyes...a regretful look. Well done!

Hey Bob,

Honestly, what kind of photography is this - can you give me a name or a genre or a label? I honestly would like to know and so I can learn and expand my knowledge. I am not kidding or being a wise guy - is there really a name for this kind of photography as you had said? I see this as a cross between a color image converted to a B&W using separation of the whites and the blacks (or the lights and the darks) using digital artistry and then some different kind of color processing or color added to the B&W with a limited amount. Thank you.

Tom

The entire image is thought provoking, quite compelling and I've come back to it several times without commenting. Some posters have commented about "the fist", and what I'm thinking is that it completes the title of "The Fallen Angel"; perhaps considering it a metaphor, Satan's attempt to grasp all of humanity for his own use.

An arresting face, someone who's been through the mill, and it just doesn't stop! Well done.

Shine, a very powerful image indeed !!! The white on the knuckles could be toned down but for the most part is not a deal breaker for me. Over all you have an outstanding image with composition/pose to your processing skills. I know you have many other outstanding images but this one is at the top of your list for one of your best yet. The sadness of the eyes and even though the expression cannot be disclosed for the hand/fist covers the mouth only leaves one to speculate curiously the mystery behind your character. Well done !!!

That's the beauty of it right now. I'm seeing more and more of it (black and white, very little with color) but I don't think it has an actual name yet. I've heard "Gritty black and white", "high contrast" etc. It just has a feel that impacts emotion, but I really haven't heard a specific name for the genre. To me, things that are new and different, especially ones that make you think and feel, are a true art form. I don't know how to do it, and it isn't anything near the style I do (mostly romantic/wedding/family), but it sure doesn't mean that I don't love the heck out of it when it's done well. Pale Pictures (Russ Elkins) is a master of it, and used to offer online tutorials. I think he still does, but not through the old website, I believe you need to contact him directly. If anyone could define it, I would bow to him.

Thank you Dave ...
Unusually for me this is not a homeless subject .. He is a photoartist himself .
Having spoken to him at length, I found out he was a sufferer of 'cluster headaches' ... Something I knew nothing about ... I knew nothing about the condition so watched u tube videos and read up on the condition before I began my work on him....
In the UK , most of us including medics are unaware of the condition and the people which have this condition are left to suffer undiagnosed...hence the reflection of pain...
A gross generalisation follows...
Severe headaches ... Occurring 3/4 times a night, equivalent to the pain of childbirth .... Otherwise known as suicide headaches...the subject had broken teeth which have occurred during attacks... No know aetiology or cure... As quoted above 'the pain just doesn't stop'
To reflect this, I over whitened the knuckles to hopefully reflect some kind of pain,... I am glad this has come over in most of the above comments ...
I hope this gives you an idea of the thought behind my processing ...
I am now realising that my work is not just about the subject, but I need to have an understanding of the subject to process as I do...
An interesting journey starting as this is my first 'non homeless character...
Enjoy, and thNk you all for looking in..
Kind regards
Shine
