Erm ..... sorry ..... give the guy a break? What's it to you personally? Yes, he may be away, I grant you that, but he set up the post. Would you set up such a post and not respond to replies? Seems non-sensical to me ! Should I check on your own history in this respect? I have to question this fella's motives, maybe even your own.

I don't see any response from you to the initial question - perhaps it might be related to the fact that the last 3+ pages of your "outpourings" have been in the Attic - nowt to do with photography, but obviously of interest to you in your increasingly divided country. Have to tell ya' that my personal feelings about having an "Attic" such as yours on a photographic forum is highly derogatory, totally unnecessary and detracts from the initial concept. Shame to see our most favoured ally falling into such disarray.

In light of your political tendencies on this forum, do I detect something "anti-Brit" in your response?

Have never seen a post related to Fuji cameras and lenses???

A few questions for you Francis Joseph ...... from a UK member (and Fuji user) that's been around much longer than you.

1. You posted a question that is patently untrue - honest and true responses have been delivered - why have you not responded - it's YOUR post ?
2. In your time here (Sept 2018 to today) you've made this post about Fuji and 4 others (software related) - may I ask - what is the purpose of your post? If you have questions you really need to be much more specific.
3. Why should any of us bother to respond to this sort of post ?
4. Who are you?
5. What's your level of (Fuji) knowledge and experience, and, I guess, on-going interest ?
6. It'd be real nice for us foreigners to know just where in the vast USA you're based.

It's a forum where I for one, and many others, endeavour to help those who ask preferably the right questions.

Why not better help us to help you - if that's the real purpose of your post ?

[quote=wide2tele]You read waaaay too deeply into things.

So do you ! Why d'ya get so involved? And why not show us a pic of you rather than what you have shown so far? It takes us but a few minutes to determine your age. We're all "picture takers". Stay with what you have, along with the others who, and I agree with SuperflyTNT, are content with your DSLR's. It seems to me, from afar in the UK, and after so many pages, that it's the DSLR users who are the "unhappy" ones here - not the mirrorless users !

Time to "grow up" you old photographers ........ just get on with what's right for you.

To the OP - perhaps the "can of worms" you opened was not what you expected - hence your lack of activity for some days now.

To the "DSLR anti- mirrorless" users - stop being so angry - enjoy what you have, but please stop being so negative about what some of us have been using for longer than you might think. Change happens - you go with it, or not, your choice.

Tom Peters "In search of Excellence" 1982 - "Perception is Everything" - read it.

Mmmm - the "point" to which I responded was "as a general rule mirrorless cameras don't perform well in low light" - it's clear in the "quote reply" - I guess we really are "two nations separated by a common language" !

On a lighter note - how nice it is to sit back and watch people "arguing" about issues I personally resolved some six to seven years ago !

Low light performance is a sensor issue and not a mirror/no mirror issue. Both DSLR and mirrorless cameras can have the same sensor so there's no difference.

In my opinion, mirrorless cameras do not do well in low light as a general rule.

If you don't have the experience, and, perhaps, only listen to "hearsay", then your opinion can become "somewhat fuzzy" - maybe not even correct !

Like Ysarex I've been a mirrorless user for more years than many on this forum - happily used to use a Nikon D700, have used Fuji X-Series, still do, and now added Nikon Z in the last month. I'm simply an enthusiast-cum-hobbyist, but now, and for my reasons, am totally mirrorless. I'm also in a different country, but that shouldn't make any difference.

Here's a couple of "low light" shots taken 3 months ago with Fuji X-T2 (now 2 generations behind the latest Fuji tech) - only light is the candle - camera has an APS-C sensor, not full frame - so tell me please "does my mirrorless camera really not do well in low light ?"

#1 : X-T2 with 35mm XF f1.4 lens - 1/80 sec, f1.4, ISO 500
#2 : X-T2, same lens - 1/100 sec, f1.4, ISO 800

To the "you'll never get me into a mirrorless camera" brigade - fine. Your choice. Be happy. Stay happy.
Some of us have "made the leap to mirrorless", and long ago, our choice. Guess what - we're content too !
Peaceful co-existence !

Neill - thx for responding and I understand your position - my "do you need the Z7 over the Z6" was aimed at the reverend and his "don't have a lot of spare cash" comment. He has since responded in the thread and seems to be happy to find the extra cash to cater for his landscape requirements. Fine by me !

[...... "yes it is at times difficult to use and change settings on the fly."

So - you have experienced these problems, Ray - the need to be able to quickly change one of aperture, shutter speed and ISO.

Many of us, and depending upon the highly individual situation, have exactly that need - me too, and I recognised that back in 2013 with my D700 and f-mount lenses - and found my answer in mirrorless cameras - namely the Fuji X-T1 - it became immediately apparent that I could change all necessary exposure parameters without taking my eye away from the EVF - everything I needed to see was happening in real time right in view.

All major camera companies now have that facility and "picture quality", the apparent "dominant pre-requisite" of larryepage, and he's oft-times mentioned it here, is difficult to differentiate between 'em all.

But I couldn't "watch" the exposure changing in front of me on my D700 viewfinder - and I don't think you can see the same with a D850 in the same way as you can with a Z camera, or any mirrorless.

Read Larry's posts about mirrorless and you'll see what's important to him and why he is reluctant, at least at present, to "go mirrorless". I have no problem with that.

I discovered different benefits of mirrorless to me some time ago, and would never go back. I can take a pic of "excellent picture quality" with my Fuji (APS-C) or my Z6, both smaller, less obtrusive, easier to carry, easier to use "on the fly" ..... for me. Hence my "take the hard choice now" comment. You are you. Not me, nor any other of the UHH community ..... you must choose ..... and that's the fun !

Each of us is different, thank goodness - just follow the age-old principle - where am I now? where do I want to be? will my current gear get me there? if not, given the way the market is going, what do I personally need to help get me there within my financial constraints?

You'll find your way - I'm sure !

Never be "too busy" to listen to the "guy outside the tent" ...... !

Thanks to everyone for their helpful information. Thanks especially to Craggy. I had found individual Pal2 Tech videos, but not the entire listing. Love my new XT4. It just has such a nice feel to it. Waiting for the 70-300 to go on sale and the stimulus check.

Happy to help, my friend !

Regarding Fuji command dials, and yes, it's an individual choice, no right or wrong answers - I have shutter speed set to rear command dial (it's swifter to change than on the top dial and can be changed in 1/3 stops) and ISO (as per pal2tech's video) set to front command dial, and for same reason. And aperture? Use the ring on the lens. And you can see it all happening in the EVF as you do it - one of the "great" benefits of mirrorless ! It's not that difficult to re-train and create new habits !

I'm sure you'll enjoy working out something comfortable and which works for you.

I cannot afford to start buying the Z mount lenses even used and still afford the Z mount lenses. The used prices on my existing bag of lenses are well below the replacement costs of Z mount lenses. I would like to hear how people who have used the adapter regularly find it for function and handling. I like the mirror less sensor doing the juggle dance and also the increased resolution.

Mmm - looks like you're in a "half-way house" - "would like" to move from D810 to "Z" - time to decide, perhaps, if your glass is "half full" or "half empty".

If I read you right you would need to sell the D810 to buy any new camera. Finances are tight. Time for a "total re-assesment of gear needed to take you forward"?

Only you can decide. Questions I'd ask you ......

Why the Z7 ? Do you "really need" the increased resolution over say, the Z6 - or do you just "like it" (like the idea)? Only certain types of users "really need" 45 megapixels - do you?

For any "existing f-mount user" one problem is their perceived investment in lenses. When you bought the lenses were they purchased to make sure they were an investment? Or did/do you buy them just to use them? In pure monetary terms they're only worth what the current BUYING market will accept. Yes they have some current value - but you'll not find experienced mirrorless users buying f-mount lenses - ask them about the best lenses for a mirrorless camera they'll all say "buy those designed for the camera" - bottom line, sell your f-mount lenses to those hanging on to DSLR's, and quick !

I'm not you, don't know you, cannot tell much about you from what I read, am in a different country, so what to say further ?

Your Z7 could easily be a Z6. That'll ease financial pressure. What lenses do you really need to USE now and going forward? Can you get away, even if it means no photos for a while, without the additional expense of an FTZ adapter, which might easily become redundant as you become a "Z user"?

Hard decisions now may well prove beneficial in the long run.

This may help ...... https://photographylife.com/nikon-z6-vs-z7

Does the front control dial only control aperature on some lenses? I have read the manual, but maybe I missed it. Thanks for your help.

As an X-Series user since 2013 I can tell you that one of the many features that creates "enjoyment use" of these cameras is the fact that most of the good-to-excellent XF lenses have an aperture ring - so why not use it? You're coming from a Canon where the facility is not available and is controlled by a command dial.

If you're gonna use Fuji please understand that there are some "habit changes" to make - so be prepared to accept, learn, start using - and guess what, you've suddenly got a "new" habit !

There are some changes that you can make with Fuji command dials - menu / set up / button and dial setting / command dial setting - best way to learn what they do is press the buttons, try them, see what works for you.

As a new Fuiji user you may well want to take a very close look at this YouTube channel - a fellow north American of yours, and, in my experience, one of the best "help tools" for Fuji that can be found anywhere.......

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBT6ZUFLWSkghYRzPQkWbhA/videos

Lots to learn, but be patient, take your time, learn the best new habits and you'll find out why there are so many "happy Fuji users" around the world.

Thanks LEE337. I have been to that page multiple times with no luck. It's a real mystery to me. All my other software downloads install just fine. The Nikon installer says it is installed, but I'll be damned if I can find it anywhere. I'm sure Windows 10 has it stashed in some off the wall location, but a search comes up empty.

Lance - I successfully downloaded and installed the NX Studio Software a few days ago here in the UK to my Windows 10 pc.

I started here : https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/564/NX_Studio.html

Clicked on "View download page" and got this : https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/sw/195.html

1) Choose operating system
2) Read "Notices" - are you logged into your pc as administrator? Did you "exit all other applications that may be running, including anti-virus"?
3) Scroll further down to "Installation" - did you create a separate folder for NX Studio on your hard drive? My folder is in "Pictures" and named Nikon NX Studio.
4) Scroll further down : "Accept Agreement" and fill in the "Select your region"
5) The download box lights up and the installer file will downlaod to your pc. It might go to "Downloads" or it might ask you for a specific file folder to download to.

Now - check exactly that the launch file (S-NXSTDO-010000WF-ALLIN-ALL___.exe) you downloaded is where it should be.
After that, clicking on the launch file should do it all for you - it will remove any previous progs that the new software does not need and install NX Studio, and Nikon Transfer 2 (needed to copy files from your camera), and place icons on your desktop.
Don't forget to "unpause" your anti-virus once it's done.

Two places on your pc you can check to see if it's installed - although you shouldn't really need to if you have icons on your desktop :

Control Panel / All Settings / Programmes and Features (it should be in the alphabetical list)
Start button (bottom left corner) / Settings / Apps (it should appear in the list)

If you've already managed it before reading this - well, you got there !

Royce - have you read and understood the article by Thom Hogan I sent you above?

And the link within that article regarding compatibility of AF-P lenses with your camera ?

When you have fully understood everything it should become clear which is the most appropriate 70-300 lens for you.
