Does the front control dial only control aperature on some lenses? I have read the manual, but maybe I missed it. Thanks for your help.

Does the lens in question have an aperture ring?

As an X-Series user since 2013 I can tell you that one of the many features that creates "enjoyment use" of these cameras is the fact that most of the good-to-excellent XF lenses have an aperture ring - so why not use it? You're coming from a Canon where the facility is not available and is controlled by a command dial.

If you're gonna use Fuji please understand that there are some "habit changes" to make - so be prepared to accept, learn, start using - and guess what, you've suddenly got a "new" habit !

There are some changes that you can make with Fuji command dials - menu / set up / button and dial setting / command dial setting - best way to learn what they do is press the buttons, try them, see what works for you.

As a new Fuiji user you may well want to take a very close look at this YouTube channel - a fellow north American of yours, and, in my experience, one of the best "help tools" for Fuji that can be found anywhere.......

Lots to learn, but be patient, take your time, learn the best new habits and you'll find out why there are so many "happy Fuji users" around the world.

Fuji XT4; the front aperture ring is electronic; the aperture shows up on the bottom of the rear screen; quite effective!

After owning my Fuji X-H1 for a year, I discovered by accident a great Fuji support program.
TECH TIME WITH Fujifilm
LET'S HAVE A 1-ON-1 CHAT
This is a free program for Fuji users. It is a Zoom meeting with one of their techs. It is FREE. As far as I know it is not limited to a single meeting. I had been having problems with the Exposure Compensation Setting (it can be accessed several different ways) The tech was great and walked me through several ways to set it and it is no longer a problem. We spent about 45 minutes on my 30 minute call. One more reason for being a Fuji fan. I will probably do another session in a few months just to improve my skills. Fuji is great because you can customize so many settings but it can be frustrating starting out for that reason.
Google Fujifilm TechTime to sign up. Good Luck.

BTW if your lens has an aperture ring it must be set to "A" if you want to control it from the front control.

Thank you Craggy. Great channel page of help. Just bought XT-3 (Thought I would wait on the XT-4 till they shake out issues. And the and the S10. Sold most of my Sony (which I like) it financed a Fuji setup.
Fuji cameras and lens are really a joy creatively. A little complicated if you are coming from Nikon and Sony.
Whats great third party lens Meile, 7artisans, Viltrox are making very reasonable pretty good lens. Thanks

Which lens? Some are electronically controlled, however, many are controlled viscxely with a ring on the lens, which is my preferred management of aperture.

Cheers!

This video is terrific! I learned so much about how to customise all the dials. Highly recommended.

Thanks to everyone for their helpful information. Thanks especially to Craggy. I had found individual Pal2 Tech videos, but not the entire listing. Love my new XT4. It just has such a nice feel to it. Waiting for the 70-300 to go on sale and the stimulus check.

Happy to help, my friend !

Regarding Fuji command dials, and yes, it's an individual choice, no right or wrong answers - I have shutter speed set to rear command dial (it's swifter to change than on the top dial and can be changed in 1/3 stops) and ISO (as per pal2tech's video) set to front command dial, and for same reason. And aperture? Use the ring on the lens. And you can see it all happening in the EVF as you do it - one of the "great" benefits of mirrorless ! It's not that difficult to re-train and create new habits !

I'm sure you'll enjoy working out something comfortable and which works for you.
