Thank you all for the kind words. I will try not to be so much of a stranger.

Don't have the time to post as regular as I used to, but I will include a mixed bag of happy snaps for the viewing enjoyment. Hope everyone is shooting often and out there having fun with the camera.
Enjoy

Is the Nikon 80 to 400 a good telephoto to use on the Nikon D850 I would like to hand hold sometimes. Also what are good lenses for the 959 for general shooting like in the ⛰️

I shoot both 80-400 and 200-500 with D850's. Hands down, the better lens is the 80-400. That being said, it depends on the subjects you shoot most often and your shooting techniques. If you are impatient and do a lot of stalking, and want to shoot from a farther distance, and your subjects don't require fast focusing, the 200-500 is a decent lens. On the other hand, if you enjoy shooting landscape, and wildlife(including some birds), with a handheld ability, the 80-400 is the way to go.

I shoot almost exclusively with a tripod, so technique has to be emphasized much more. If you are just looking for a zoom with longer reach, the Sigma 150-600 is a very good lens. It provides you with 200mm more zoom than the 80-400. Just something to consider.

I don't see a lot of difference in the images. They are nice, but with the noisy, high ISO appearance, there is very little detail in the feathers. At least on my monitor. They are all acceptable images for screen display.

If you are trying to decide which lens to choose for use in the field, you should be asking other questions. What are the sizes and distances of your subjects, would be is a better thing to consider. How mobile your subjects are for targeting will also alter the choice of lens. All of the samples you provided are decent, the real selection is in the field functionality of the lens. Many photographers shoot a very specific subject selection and they could choose one over the other. I happen to capture a wide range of subjects, and have found the modern zoom lenses more useful.

I use wetransfer.com. File size is of little concern since I can send up to 2 or 3 gigs for the free service. Have never come close to that in a mailing.

I like them all but that first photo is amazing! Never seen another quite like it.

Thanks. I had not come across fruit flies with this behavior either. The image area is only about the size of a quarter. The flies were smaller than a pin head. very interesting.

It was quite productive. I posted three sets of dragons and plan on one more. I got to spend a lot of time with family, catch 5 of the g-son’ last high school football games, visit his college for next year(Rice) and met his coaches and met up with some old dragon hunting buddies. Enjoy the holiday with family and friends!
