VASA was developed by Microsoft, but it hasn't been released. Heaven help us if and when they do release. Imagine this. You take a picture of a face and add any audio text to it. the face moves and speaks the text file perfectly. They tried it with a drawing of a Japanese face speaking Japanese. Although MS did not train it to speak Japanese, it performed perfectly. As an added feature, you can specify serious, happy, concerned, or angry. If this becomes available, we will never be able to believe what we see and hear.

Take a look. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/project/vasa-1/

The old axiom of believing nothing you hear and only half what you see no longer applies.

We will be out of touch for the next couple of weeks with travel to and from Hilton Head Island. I will not be staying in touch, but I hope to catch up when I return. I hope that the birds are plenty and the weather is good.

Therefore, if you do not hear from me starting tomorrow, it is not a snub.

Not far north of HH is a park called Donnelley Wildlife Management Area. It is along Hwy 17. I've seen spoonbills, egrets, herons, wading birds like sandpipers, and eagles there. Also lots of large alligators. If you take a drive over to Savanah there is a very nice train museum with an operating turntable.

Enjoy your trip!

I tend to hang out with older folks, and I've noticed something amusing. If something falls to the floor, people don't rush to pick it up. Like me, I bet they are asking themselves two questions: Do I really need that thing? If I bend down that far, will I be able to get back up?

It's all relative -- a piece of change, maybe not. A 100.00 bill definitely! A beautiful woman, maybe just fall down beside her hoping neither of you get up!

Are you a HOG that even one time in your life you held stocks? Ever get a snail mail about a court-approved class action lawsuit in which you may be entitled to some compensation (of unknown amount) for some past misdeeds by a company that you held stock in? I get such snail mail once every couple of years.

Yesterday, I got one of these for a Toronto-Dominion Bank. It had to do with some misdeeds at that Bank between 2015 and 2017, and with a fund of $22 Million to deliver to such verified claimants. In order to claim such, you had to provide online a detailed and documented report (broker's statements) of every transaction for that company between Dec. 2, 2015 and March 9, 2017...that's like 8-9 years ago. I don't know about you, but my record keeping for things that old is highly lacking. I don't know how many shares I had...when they were bought...when they were sold...and if the claim is worth $1 or $1,000 or more. It seems that the Class Action Administrator makes it highly difficult or impossible for anyone to make a claim. I'm not gonna claim. Thoughts?

I signed up for one of those a few years ago. I can't remember the details but all that was required was to sign a postcard and return it. I think I received a grand sum of around 13.00!

A friend is about 72, and I don't think she's ever had a printer. She uses the library or Staples for any printing. Although she has a laptop, she uses her phone almost exclusively. She asked me for advice about buying a printer.

Printers are great, but since they were invented by the Devil, they can torment the user. I'm going to recommend an Epson Ink Tank and suggest she go through the wireless printing setup, something I've never done. I have enough trouble with printers without worrying about getting them to work with Wi-Fi. I'm also going to give her the choice of a cheap ink cartridge printer because I don't think she'll do much printing. I dread the phone calls and emails when her printer doesn't work right. 🙄

EDITED: I recommended to new version of my Epson ET-2760. It's the ET-2800 for $200. Mine has printed thousands of copies on the original ink - since 2020.

Sam's just got in a new version of the Epson -- pretty basic model but the price is right -- 179.98.

About 25 years ago, I decided to treat myself to a "vanity" watch. I looked at a number of them, including Rolex, Omega, Audemars, Tag Heuer, Omega, IWC, etc. In the end I decided on a Breitling Chronomat. I still wear it, although not every day. It's been serviced several times for CLA, and it keeps superb time, while not quite as accurate as my quartz Seikos and Citizens.

I still see the ads for the fake Rolexes. If you're wearing a fake, no one knows --- but you do.

Many years ago I worked as an apprentice in a manufacturing jewelry shop. We made jewelry as well as set stones and sold high-end jewelry. One day I asked the owner of the shop why someone would pay 1200.00 for a gold Rolex when we also sold gold-plated Rolexes for 350.00. I told him they were indistinguishable and no one would know the difference. He replied, oh, but the owner would. (Before someone chimes in that Rolex never made gold-plated watches, you need to check the facts -- they did). As you can see, the prices reflect prices from about sixty years ago before the US went off the gold standard. In fact that happened while I worked at the shop and gold was 38.00 an ounce one day and something like 375.00 a day later.

Interesting: The ingredient in the bag of Turkey testicles is Chicken testicles! I can see it now -- mom sends her 12-year-old to the store to buy Turkey testicles and comes home with this. The kid gets raked over the coals for getting chicken, not turkey!

I wanted to order from the local Chinese restaurant last night, but I didn't have a menu. Looking online didn't help. One site, Easy-Shop, offers a picture of the menu for $24. Really?

I hate calling the restaurant because of the language problem. I told the young lady what I wanted, and she asked me a question. I had no idea what she said, so I hesitated. Then I replied, "Yes." Unfortunately, that wasn't good enough. She was asking an either/or question, so I had to try again. It was one of those situations where I wasn't sure what food I would be getting when I arrived to pick it up. I think it turned out okay. Whatever it was, it was delicious.

I think it would be a good idea for ethnic stores to hire a native speaker to deal with customers. Even when I picked up the order and paid, I had no idea what she was saying. Whatever she was saying, my replies didn't cause a problem. 😊

Been an interesting few years subscribing to UHH but its become far too vitriolic with members criticizing posts quite unhelpfully simply to boost their own over inflated egos. Suppose its only to be expected though in a country where children have the Constitutional Right to take guns to school to k**l their teacher and other pupils! Yes and elect a criminal con merchant as President.

Keep well those who do not fit this profile.

Cheers JohnR

I believe in any situation the Franklin formula should be used -- take a sheet of paper, draw a line down the center, and in one column list all the negatives of the thing in question, and in the other list all the positives. I believe that while the UHH negative column will have its share of entries, the positive side will be much longer. There are smart, knowledgeable people on this forum who are willing to give their time to educate, encourage, and direct others, and to "throw out the baby with the bath water" is a disservice to those individuals. Should you choose to stay, I suggest you post some helpful commentary that is not (as you claim vitriolic) to help balance the scale.

I'm not sure why I and others are commenting on this post since if he is sincere about departing, he will never see our response.

We defeated Germany and helped to rebuild it into a World power, We defeated Japan and helped rebuild it into a World power. We spend billions on billions to rebuild and prop up countries, yet what have we done for the "Banana Republics"? We have taken their labor and resources and not given them back an equitable return.

While I am against i*****l i*********n, we need to understand where and why it is as it is. We need to modify our controls so that we can deal with the immigration problem in a positive manner.

If we need to, why not set up a city near the border to house immigrants for six months to a year? During this time we would do due diligence to ensure their status and determine if they should be allowed citizenship. This would not be a free ride. They would be required to learn some English, understand our laws and Constitution, and learn a sk**l that would be marketable in the US. They also would receive minimal assistance and be required to work within the temporary community as laborers, cleaners, and anything else that would assist in their upkeep. When they are properly vetted, but before they have completed the other requirements they could receive work visas and be allowed to leave the immigration city for work only.

Some may ask why the requirements when people from Africa, Europe, and Asia do not have to go through such scrutiny and training - I'm talking about i******s. I do not endorse our present policy of just letting anyone into the country. They need to meet specific requirements and if they do not, they should be quarantined until a determination of their worth to our society can be established.

Don't be fooled, we need immigration -- the legal kind. Three and a half million Americans die off each year and while the birthrate is very slightly higher, I expect that to change in the next ten to twenty years as the baby-boom generation dies off. The birthrate in the US is in a constant decline (with a slight bump up in 2020, most likely due to C****-** and people staying in more). Without immigration, we will be a diminishing society.
