I am betting that the only way you will be able to use both flashes is if at least one of the units has a true optical slave mode. Up until the much-improved Canon 600 series came out, I don't believe any Canon flash had that capability. MAYBE the very latest 580s, but for sure not the earlier ones. An incredible omission, IMO. That is why Canon folks were buying up older Nikon flashes - to use as optical slaves.
If the Sony has that ability, then you would have to use the Canon in manual - NOT TTL.
Each manufacturer has its own proprietary system to trigger their flashes and so we are stuck using only the units made to work with that system.
Note that when I talk of optical slaves, that is NOT part of the mfg. proprietary IR system.

Thank you, CaptainC, as always, you are a plethora of information. I am showing my ignorance (not stupidity). How would I know if the Sony is optical, the 580 EXii is not by my bit of research. I do not see whether Sony's flashes are optical in their data within the manual unless I missed it. I will go back and read the manual more thoroughly and continue to research. I will say that after reading your post, I googled optical slaves and found that Canon does not play well with others. I felt in my heart that it was a proprietary issue, I was just hoping... I may be trying different methods for a remote flash. Again, I truly thank you for your response.

The Sony flash trigger system sends a coded signal from an on-camera or the built in flash that tells the wireless flashes to fire a brief 'pre-flash' that tells the camera what exposures is needed.
The camera then send a coded signal to the off camera flashes telling them what exposure is needed. The signal to 'fire' is then sent to the off camera flashes and they fire at the previously calculated level for a correct exposure.
If you are willing to go manual, I believe you might be able to get non Sony flashes to fire at whatever output they are set to but I've never attempted it.

Sounds like you may know setting on the camera to use. I set the flash to manual just to try to get it to flash, but with no luck so far. Thanks so much for helping.

Are the channels universal? Perhaps channel 1, as you mentioned, may properly 'ignite' the other flash when it is set to a different channel? Maybe try all the different channel combinations?

Great point. I will do this. Thanks.

No, as per the manual, I think that all must be on the same channel to work. I will try though. Thanks for your help.

Is your trigger system IR or RC controlled? If IR (infrared)then ecobin is correct but all flashes must be in line of site and will not be effective in bright areas. If RC (radio controlled) then you need a transmitter on camera and receivers on each flash. This can be accomplished cheaply or the skies the limit, the only restriction is distance from receiver to transmitter, usually around 2-400 ft. Bright, dark, line of sight or hidden causes no problem. Providing you're not in a lead lined bunker.

I am fairly certain this ST-E2 is IR. I will say that Sony does needs to check with Canon's speck writers. Canon's manuals are much more readable. I did read that all flashes must be on the same channel in the manual. I am in a rather dark den with both flashes in my lap facing the camera, so I do not think distance or line of site is the issue. It has to be my controls. I am very glad that the Canon flash will work remotely with the transmitter on the camera because I need it this Friday. I tried to use the Sony as the transmitter, but I guess I just can't find the right control. Thank you for the info, I have learned from your input. These cameras are just smarter than me!

Put the Canon on "slave" setting - the flash from the Sony will trigger the Canon. Just ensure that the optical sensor on the Canon can "see" the flash.

Must have settings on the Sony incorrect. Sony is flashing. I have flash on Wireless, remote; but the Canon will not flash? Thanks for helping, but I am still trying. I tried every mode setting on the flash. UGH!

I have recently purchased an a7rII and a HVL-60m flash. I really like the flexibility of the new flash, but my research suggested that I had to have a trigger on the camera to engage remote flash. This I did not find in the Sony literature but online. Well, the interesting fact is that I have a Canon 580EXii speedlite and a Canon speedlite transmitter. Well, my remote Canon transmitter works the remote Canon speedlite on the a7rII, but not the HVL-60. Both are set to Channel 1 and I have tried them separately and together. Here is the question, is there a way to use my Canon transmitter as a trigger to ignite the Sony HVL-60 and can I use the two different brands of flashes in conjunction or are these proprietary? I can not find what to actually set my Sony flash on to deliver a remote flash using this transmitter. I have tried the different modes; Manual, TTL, WL RMT, etc. but must be doing something incorrectly. I am really not wanting to purchase another expensive Sony flash as a trigger. Your help is greatly appreciated.

As a novice with a 7d I will offer suggestions. There are some outstanding folks that have a great deal more knowledge than myself. Does the focus work on Auto? That might be a clue if it works that the general focus is working. Also, look at the quick button. You can change the type focus there too. The button on the far right should change styles of focus and there is a small button at the top by the shutter release that works for me. You will get many replies that will help. I just wanted you to know hoggers do read and will help.

Oh, I don't do it all at once. That's the problem. It takes me a while, the savings for the special occasion is gone before I finish.
