This downy busy in same tree as pileated--bass and tenor hammering.
Heard this one before I saw it. Went looking for these woodpeckers yesterday and today. Found one near path yesterday only to watch a gang of crows chase a red-tailed into the tree and scare away the pileated. This one was busy behind a tangle of branches.
Haystack and Tillamook Lighthouse. Working on 16x9 crops of pics to post on my 17" digital picture frame. A fun exercise.
Yes. I find that if I can catch them feeding, they allow me to wade closer--that betimes is the limiting thing, the surf surges. Have many more excellent pictures of a feeding pair from today.
First there was one, then a pair feeding on the rocks in the surf.
Peregrine falcons are reported to visit haystack rock. In all my years of visiting the rock, I'd never seen one there. On Friday I sited (and posted) pics of a peregrine chasing a bald eagle off the rock. Saturday, while walking the beach in the sunshine, I spied a bump in the rock's features some 250 ft up near the top of the rock (320 ft or so). Glassed it and there sat the peregrine preening and surveying "its" territory.
Thanks. That was my surmise--peregrine falcon. But I've not seen enough of them to be certain. Peregrines are reported to be around this Haystack Rock area. I've seen gulls and crows harass an eagle, but never a Peregrine.
I lived in Seaside for many years. Have been coming to Canon Beach for many more. This is the first time I've witnessed a bull dropping a clam on the sand to crack open a clam. Maybe half a dozen drops before it cracked enough to eat the treat. I've read of gulls denting cars using this technique--a clam claim.
Man on the beach was streaming bubbles. Managed to capture one with a reflection of the Hallmark Resort and Haystack Rock (distorted on the left) inside.
Out to sea against the setting an eagle was chased off from Haystack Rock (Canon Beach, OR) by a bird I first thought was a seagull. When glassed, the bird's profile is that of another raptor, not a seagull. Anybody know the silhouette?
PDX approach from west to east following Columbia River to Portland airport.
Blacked picture window background, hummy was on lookout for feeder rival. I don't think it saw its reflection in the glass.
Thanks for comments and suggestion. That's what it's all about, telling a story. What story do you want your pic to tell?" A better story" excludes the distractions, the extraneous and irrelevant.
Snow is gone, hummy lives on finding a bit of sun between rain showers.
Not quite so. Noon break in rain. Found eagle taking lunch break in a snag being bombed by a squadron of crows. Eagle ate its fill, dropped the carcass and left the crows to think they'd chased him off. Just the right drama for a dreary day.
