If the picture was taken in the late afternoon facing northwest, would the side of the mesa facing the camera not be on the southeast side, and therefore be in shadow???

Whatever the case, there is a little too much sky. It takes away from the main landscape. A crop could easily fix this for a real nice photo. (Whoever took it).
