Lenses for Smart Phones

Have you heard about this? Will our cameras become obsolete? A friend sent me this link to an article about new technology and lenses for smart phones. An interesting article.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/17/technology/personaltech/add-ons-to-turn-a-smartphone-into-a-semi-pro-camera.html

That should take you to the article. (I'm not always good at cutting and pasting!)

All cameras become obsolete, PatoGraphy. But if I have to stop to put a lens on my smart phone, I can just grab my point and shoot. Your camera is safe for now.

I know they have that "obsolete" distinction :-( And I just bought a new one. Pentax K-5. Love it. Still keeping my K20 because sometimes one camera isn't enough. BUT snapping a jacket and lens on my iPhone??? It will be a while before I do that, I'm thinking.

I don't see this catching on. Can you imagine framing that perfect once in a lifetime picture...and your phone starts ringing. By the time it stops ringing the opportunity is gone. I'll keep my phones and cameras separate!

I am thinking this would make a great skit for SNL, Jay Leno or whoever. Funny!

I have an image, in my mind. Can you see, carrying around a 400mm lens , leaving the camera home, and using the phone?

I remember once seeing a game controller made for a cell phone. This was a full size, two handed controller that would plug into a cell phone so that you could play video games on your phone. The box that this came in would have held 100 cell phones. The young salesman who was an avid gamer was even stumped as to why anyone would want to try to turn a phone into a full size gaming device.

The whole idea behind a camera in a cell phone is that you always have your phone with you, not that it makes a great camera. Putting large lenses on it would completely defeat the purpose. If it really were a good camera that would be different. The article said it would be a professional quality camera. I see nothing about it that resembles a professional camera with professional features.

To steal a line from Jerry Clowers, who ever came up with this idea was "educated beyond their intelligence".

The only time they will get my d300 from me is when my hands are cold and stiff.

Wonder what this will do to the warranty on the phone? This is too, too funny. Guess it must be too hard to put the phone down for ONE second and pull out that point and shoot that fits in your pocket that was, you know, actually meant to take a picture with. Is this the epitome of lazy or what? Just makes me laugh!!!!
