I would like to ask if anyone can help with a query? I have a Nikon D5000 with a 16-85 Nikkor lens. I get good results from this combination, but am thinking of changing to a Sigma 18-250 Macro to give me more reach than the Nikkor. I shoot RAW and use Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 3.6 for conversion and editing, and find the automatic lens correction in LR very useful. However, this function isn’t available for the Sigma unless I upgrade to Lightroom 4, which I don’t want to do in light of the many problems that others who’ve upgraded are having; including a friend who has given up on LR 4 altogether and reverted to version 3.

So, my question is this: is there a way I can get the auto lens correction tool in Lightroom 3.6 to work with the new Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM without having to make my own profile, which seems a daunting process?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Just an observation; many people DON'T have issue with LR4 (I used to...but now I don't) they are up to version 4.4 Release Candidate and it runs great.

My plans do include two rock solid tripods - self timers as i have no remotes (yet) and no more than 400 iso ( I have always been afraid of "noise".
I may just shoot a series of 15 - 30 second shots with both cameras in hopes of catching the moment.
f16 sounds good to me.

Do not worry about noise it can be removed; here are suggestions:

Comet Panstarrs is quite small, so can get a little lost in the frame if you have a very wide field of view. Lots of different focal lengths can work, but if you have a standard 50mm lens that can be a good place to start (with either cropped sensor or full frame camera). Experiment with longer and shorter focal lengths. Comet Panstarrs is at its best about an hour after sunset, but there is still twilight so you will need to be constantly adjusting your exposure to match the changing light. Keep your exposure time down to around 15 secs or less (longer with very wide lenses) and open up the aperture. Keep the ISO low while twilight is bright but bump it up as you need to as the sky gets darker.

Thanks, for the review, MT. A Gimble and, probably, a new tripod are next on my list. I've been wondering how to get something that is useable with the 50-500mm without breaking the proverbial bank. I'll definitely give this one a closer look.

To be honest, I have no idea how long this price will hold, or inventory for that matter, so I just ordered a second one for myself just to have a backup and to take on my seminars to Yellowstone for student use. At $40 its the photo bargain of the year!

I have used the Kenko TC with Nikon lens without a problem, But the Nikon TC is better with the compatible Nikon lens and Sigma says for their lens only the Sigma TC will work. So I have a set of Sigma TC for my Sigma 300 f/4 and now use only the Nikon TC 1.4, 1.7 and 2.0 with my Nikon lens

My question; Who made the rules and why should I follow them if it prohibits the photos that I want to take?

My point is I know what I like and find interesting but if everyone followed the same set of rules all of the time then we wouldn't have some of the masterpieces in the museums.

Rules are not absolutes think of them as suggestions. They are time honored ways the great masters in painting used lines, lighting etc. But there are times rules can and should be broken. Depends on what you like or what the subject is or what do you want to show

so you don't see any benefit of the UV filter?

Now that is starting another contentious issue. Those who say use an UV filter to protect your lens and those who do not. Me the only filters I use with my lens are a polarizing or a ND filter

Depends on what you photograph. I have the f/2.8 and love it since I can use a 1.4, 1.7, and 2 x tele-converter with it and also focuses better in low light. There are people raving about the f/4 model. rent one of each for a week and try them out, then make your decision
