I see the term used quite often in the forums. Excuse my ignorance but what does the dark side mean? Thanks...

It means that if you have been shooting Nikon and then buy a new Canon, you may have "moved to the Dark side". And vice Versa.
If you have been a PC user, and switch to Mac, you have gone over to the Dark Side. And vice Versa.
Film to digital? Dark Side.
MacDonalds to Burger King ...... Chevy to Ford (or worse still, Toyota) .....
