Thanks all for your help. I just called B&H Photo and they said that using one battery in the camera and one in the grip is safe and appropriate.
Thanks for your replies. I have read the manual and it does not say one way or the other. The manual says when using the grip, to install one of four different battery make-ups in the grip. It ignores the camera and the battery cavity within.
As I said , I've tried to do my homework and even called Nikon. The question which I am addressing is:can two batteries be used at the same time without damaging the camera. The manual does NOT address this question.
I used to use a battery grip on my D200 and liked it because it allowed for two batteries to be in use. This additional battery provided for peace of mind while out all day.
I now use the D300 and bought a Nikon battery grip MB-D10 with that same idea in mind. To my surprise, the grip will only hold one EN-EL3 E battery. Adding the grip to the camera does not encroach on the camera's battery compartment as it did with the D200 [ There is a 'tower' which fits into the battery cavity]
So the question is: can I leave a battery IN the camera AND add the grip with its battery? I called Nikon Tech and never heard back from them. It looks like it would work...it looks like I could fry the camera if that idea is a mistake. Has anyone dealt with this issue.? I looked on line, so it's not like I'm not trying . Hope to hear back from someone.
Just think how many hardworking families scraped together money for serious dental work which in the end enabled this guy to profit like this. One tooth at a time, I guess.

Its the money! The first thing that FDR did upon taking office was to pressure Congress to repeal the Volstead Act. This opened up the sale of liquor and provided the government with much needed liquor tax revenue. Its the money.

General Chit-Chat [non-photography talk] could it be any clearer??
Trump's speeches embolden the weak and powerless to have the courage to become racists. He is a leader of hate. This is NOT what America has stood for all these two hundred years of trying to realize the words of our Bill of Rights.
Adolph Hitler played on the fears of a people being ravaged by financial ruin and blamed the Jews for it and also promised a greater Germany...one that the German people could be proud of. The first thing he did in power was to round up his political adversaries and lock them up.Trump appeals to the reptilian part of the brain. We all have that component, and it is our responsibility to understand what that means and resist these primitive instincts.
