Nikon D300 battery grip question

I used to use a battery grip on my D200 and liked it because it allowed for two batteries to be in use. This additional battery provided for peace of mind while out all day.
I now use the D300 and bought a Nikon battery grip MB-D10 with that same idea in mind. To my surprise, the grip will only hold one EN-EL3 E battery. Adding the grip to the camera does not encroach on the camera's battery compartment as it did with the D200 [ There is a 'tower' which fits into the battery cavity]
So the question is: can I leave a battery IN the camera AND add the grip with its battery? I called Nikon Tech and never heard back from them. It looks like it would work...it looks like I could fry the camera if that idea is a mistake. Has anyone dealt with this issue.? I looked on line, so it's not like I'm not trying . Hope to hear back from someone.

Yes you can and you can also use the ELN-4 battery in the grip. Another option would be to review the manual.

Yup - the manual answers all the questions, even how to determine which order the batteries are used.

Thanks for your replies. I have read the manual and it does not say one way or the other. The manual says when using the grip, to install one of four different battery make-ups in the grip. It ignores the camera and the battery cavity within.
As I said , I've tried to do my homework and even called Nikon. The question which I am addressing is:can two batteries be used at the same time without damaging the camera. The manual does NOT address this question.

I don't have my Nikon manual but I do have a Magic Lantern manual for the D 300 and it clearly anticipates a battery installed in the body. Also look at your Custom Menu Setting on the camera back and go to D Shooting/Display - d 11 Battery Order and it anticipates a battery installed in the body plus the MB-D10.

Thanks all for your help. I just called B&H Photo and they said that using one battery in the camera and one in the grip is safe and appropriate.

Yes, and the camera's Menu will let you control which to use first.

By the way, using brackets in your post - [ - will mess up the Quote/Reply system.

I have a D7000 with the same battery grip configuration and I leave both batteries in. No problems. The only inconvenience is that I have to take the grip off to change the battery in the camera. I can live with that. It is nice to have the extra battery power regardless of how it is configured.

Have the Mb d10 and use it on both our D300 and D700. Works well on both and is easy to put on and off. Just make sure you set the camera to work off the grip first and then off the camera battery. Its just easier to keep the power fresh by just changing the grip battery. Actually I don't use it much any more but if I'm trying to impress a client, I use it on the backup d700. Size seems to matter to some people. Leon
