I do not understand this statement, as the D5500 is a DX format camera: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Product/dslr-cameras/D5500.html . To which "big brother" are you referring?

I'm sure she was referring to the D7100

Every time, I block the number, these companies just use a different number.

the more I block, the more calls I get.

Had dinner with a family and their (20ish) daughter who works for one of the "boiler room" call companies. When I told her we had a call blocker she just laughed and said: "We have hundreds of numbers". Great!

And I got the candy apple red! I'm female, so I'm allowed!

Uh oh....! I'm thinking of the 5500 because my wife will want a DSLR sometime soon and I think the 5500 would do nicely... So either I get the red or I make her buy her own. But then, I don't think red is her color....

And you pay the price in a camera that is almost twice as heavy, considerably larger and a lot more expensive, and the IQ is no different. I find the viewfinder on the 5500 quite adequate for what it does - lets you see the subject and frame the photo.

Good the hear this... I too have been looking at the 5500 since my wife decided to 'takeover' my P510 which was my P&S camera... Have a 7100 and have decided with all the lenses I have for it I might as well get a DSLR as a 2nd camera. And I like how light the 5500 is. Anything you don't like about the 5500?

Light Zone will open a TIF but only save a JPEG with lz extention on end so not of over right the orgingal. Or it can be renamed.

One reason for the LZ ending on a lightzone file is that the file now contains the "edit" commands done on the picture.

1n). Get a call blocker for your landline. $44 or. Less at Amazon

2). Remember that a lot of these calls come from outside the U.S. and will never go away.

Thanks for the links!! I usually build my own computers and the hardest part is selecting components that work together. The logicalincrements site is a real help!!

All of the pictures in this linux household (probably 10,000 but that's a guess) are organized under Digikam. And Digikan has a lot of editing features including stitching... Also connects with email and can reduce pics before sending.

Update: I was terribly wrong in my estimate above... The real number is: 77,980

DigiKam handles this quantity quite well.

According to LifeHacker, DigiKam is by far the best photo organizer for Linux.

How about partitioning your computer to run OS on one partiton while running a Windows OS on the other partition in order to accomodate the programs that would require Windows?

If I have to run Windows, which I do for taxes and syncing I-devices, I run it in a virtual machine using VirtualBox. Actually Windows is more reliable that way than on a real machine and it avoids having to re-boot back and forth between different OS's. And it makes backup of the Windows machine a lot easier. Shut windows down and then copy the whole V-disk to an external drive. (or also to my wife's machine)

My post of course was made with tongue firmly planted in cheek. I ran Ubuntu on a couple of my machines and have used Linux as well as Unix in various jobs. While I really like Ubuntu, I don't care for Gimp for photo processing, otherwise, I'd 86 Windows and be running it right now.

Take a look at AfterShotPro... I don't like Corel either but they bought the product after it was already a good one.

I live in a "Windows Free" zone.....

Do you have any experience with Lightzone and opinions?
Thanks

I have lightzone and it looks very good... Has a really good "enhance" function for JPGs that will bring out a lot of background detail that cameras will not produce..

Also has the ability to keep "edit cmds" within the jpg file so you can go back and continue editing without starting over... and the original is kept intact.

Not forgetting PhotoFiltre (with layers and for free) - upgrade if you like it.

Only good for Windows and Macs as far as I can tell.

I use AfterShotPro to work with RAW files. I find it more than adequate. Also try Digikam... A good all-purpose program.
