I still would like someone to explain how Germany, with a preponderance of small, family owned businesses, can rise to the top of the EU pile. What do they know or what are they doing that we aer not???

The Obama bashers out there fail to realize that the economy is better now than in 2008. Many things have changed since then that have given big business an edge that should send you running. Trump is promising things too good to be true. And you know what that usually boils down to. What is the answer? I know one thing: Wall Street has sold this country down the river. The people making the big bucks are paper shufflers and they don't know a screwdriver from a bag of potatoes. This country was built by people who did.

The collective comments here, to me, seem to be on the mark. Capitalism is not a dirty word..however when jobs here are lost to other groups who must work for peanuts and competitive pricing forces costs reductions..highly paid labor is going to the chopping block. You and I may see the t***h of this. However, ask yourself this: how is it that Germany is doing so well? Many smal family owned businesses with secure jobs. Just like the old days here. How can they do this?

For me and presumably for many, using a DSLR and picking the right lens for the subject is part of the satisfaction of this hobby. Using lenses, filters and varying ISO, shutter and aperture provides a great deal of satisfaction. It is the engagement with the camera that is fulfilling.

In my experience, people who little or no self-esteem are eager to find a scapegoat. They want to "feel' good and if mild or extreme hatred towards others works, well then, just do it. A lack of a sense of restraint, self- reflection, and empathy coupled with ignorance worth fighting for, is a pretty good recipe for perpetuating the delight and thrill of having a scapegoat. And if others can be convinced to go along with this hate tirade, well, so much the better. Now the really primitive friend or foe part of the brain can kick in and and if coupled with the strength that mob hysteria can produce ..why the skies the limit! Lynchings come to mind as a sort of first step whereas the French Revolution might be considered an action where just about everybody got into the act. You probably can come up with your own examples. But what I mentioned will get you going... always willing to help.

Hate to say this, but there are a lot of impoverished once middle-class folks out there who are scared and fearful. The Donald is using the same hate-based spiel that two mid-century facists used and getting the same frightening results. Simple solutions to complex problems. Hate mongering and division, scapegoating... these ploys have worked in the past and are working now.

Harry Truman was faced with more harsh decisions than most presidents. Read David McCullough's unbiased account of old Harry.

Thank you for shedding light on this controversial subject.
To the victors go the spoils and also the 'right' to write history to their liking.

My hard drive using Windows Seven died a few months ago. It was cheaper to buy a new PC with Windows Ten than to try to repair my old one. Windows Ten like all preceding programs are heralded as being 'intuitive'. I guess if you are twelve years old or from the planet Mars they might be. It has been a long hard slog to barely master this beast. Now my trusty HP Officejet K5400 printer started spitting out spuriously printed sheets in groups of six. So I bought a new one. Now I find that others have experienced the same aberration with their older printers.
I am trying to do serious work with Windows 2010 and you guessed it: now it is becoming erratic.
In my opinion Bill Gates is a pompous SOB and he and his ilk are purposely engineering Windows Ten to make obsolete all earlier programs so that these pirates can sell us the latest BS.
What has been your experience???

Talk to the Canadians about value added tax and their gymnastics to avoid paying it.
By the way, a sales tax, while adding money to the coffers for needed maintenance etc, is really regressive in that the guy on a shoestring ends up paying proportionally more than does the fat cat. As I tell my friends: if you are rich, move to New Hampshire. The only tax is your property tax which can be crippling for the modest homeowner. Of course, if you stray into a Burger King, you will pay 91/2% room and meals tax--that one is REALLY regressive!

New Hampshire has no sales tax. Will it become the nexus for all future on line sales?

This topic was discussed a few weeks ago. As I remember, the figure of 400,000 deaths per year due to 'mistakes' in medical settings was disputed. If you want to take a romp through the dark side of this issue, watch George C Scott in 'Hospital'.
