My first Nikon was a D40 x, then a D5000 then a D80 converted to IR.

Just ordered a D7100 and it will be a huge leap for me.

What are some things that I should be aware of when it

arrives other than the wow factor?

I did the same. I jumped from a d3000 to the D7100. More solid feel, much better low light capabilities. I like the user modes. Too new to comment more at this time. Enjoy.

I'm breaking in a new Nikon D7100 and was shooting everything in site. This picture is nothing special other than I'm trying to figure out the darkness on the door around the windows. The door does not look like that. It should be all white. I was not using a flash. Using a 18mm-140mm lens (18mm focal length). Aperture priority at f20. ISO 640, Shutter 1/30 sec, No EV override.

The D7100 does not have an Optical Low-Pass Filter (OLPF) as do most other DSLRs. Would the absence of low pass filter be causing this effect?

I can tell why I chose Nikon. They have a big selection of refurbished cameras and lens available for very good price. It was a great way for me to get started without shelling out a lot if money. I looked at Sony due to a collection of old Minolta lens I have from my 35mm. But Nikon won me over.

I've had my d7100 for a day and used the u1 user setting within the hour. It's great to maintain settings that I use most and can go back to when I deviate from my default settings. Very handy to have. It's going to depend on what you shoot and how often you switch settings and have fast you need to react to changing subject matter. I love it.

Good Afternoon everyone. My name is Jim aka photon56. And I'm photoholic.

So, my DSLR entry point started out with a D3000 purchase back in October of 2013. I have a Minolta Maxxum 7000 35mm from years gone by. I wanted to get back into photography again and the point and shoot camera's are not doing it for me. I purchased a refurbished Nikon D3000 camera from the local camera store for a really good deal. Passion rekindled. The D3000 has more knobs and features than I could have ever hope to use or learn. I stumbled across this wonderful forum and have been following it since my purchase. I've been pretty happy with the D3000 except for low light conditions. But, I'm sure novice skills are to blame.

But, wait, the blame is on all of you. Because now I've gone out a purchased a D7100 with a 18-140MM zoom. Oh my, what have I got myself into. Now I AM in over my head. I wanted to stick with Nikon since I started buying lens's. I have a 18-55mm and a 55-300mm.

I realized that I really love photography. My passion is the outdoors. Although I do family pics indoors, which is where the d3000 doesn't quite stack up. With grand babies now in our lives, it makes cost justification an investment, at least that's what I tell others. lol. Yep, that's what it is, an investment.

I also like taking pictures of waterfalls, water fountains. I like to play with the movement of the water or freeze action. That's fun to shoot.

I find that I shoot mostly in aperture priority mode. Playing with the DOF is an art and is fun to blur everything outside of the subject.

I do indoor shooting for the family and this is where my skills fall short. So, I'm working on honing those skills.

I want to say thanks for all the bantering and lively discussions on this forum. When I weed through all the conversations, I was able to zero in on what was going to make me happy for a few years. Now that I have a camera will take me time to grow into, I'll be working on acquiring some good lens. So, now comes the really expensive part, Right?

I'll stop rambling and just say Hi to all of you. Hope to engage in some good conversations. My username is a play on words. Think of "Game On" or "Right On".... Photo On ... or simply photon. Apparently, the name was taken so I appended a 56 on it.
