Every evening, I await for the latest edition of Hedgehog as it provides such an insightful and delightful journey into the world of photography. I have learnt so much, thank you.

A lot of stuff has been written about Nikon and Canon and at one point, I had been almost swayed to buy the 6D with the EF24-105mm IS USM lens. Then I realised that I am never ever going to print poster-sized pictures and that I really don't need to have one, other than feeling egoistic about carrying the red-lined rim and white lenses.

I have the Sony RX100 II and am really pleased with the fantastic results. So, I am about to buy myself the Sony a77 as my next DSLR instead. Hopefully, your views might help me change my mind again.

It's not always about the size of the print that you can make but the amount of cropping you can do and still get the print you want,
Bob.

There are many Sony users on the Hog, just type Sony A77 into the search engine and see what comes up.

There may be more Sony users on here than you think. See the link below:

http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-93497-1.html

Sony not only puts an excellent quality sensor in their own cameras but also makes the sensors used by many of the other camera manufacturers.

So click your Sony with pride, and welcome to UHH!

Michael, there are quite a few Sony users here. You will hear a lot more from Nikon and Canon users simply because there are a lot more of us- everywhere, not just here on the Hog. The camera brand or type you use is not important here as much of what we talk here applies to photography in general and those topics apply across the board. ;)
Welcome aboard.

35 years ago, I first ventured into serious photography buying the Pentax K2 SLR. My interest recently rekindled, I bought the Sony a55 and had just sold it. I often hear this, "Pros shoot only with Nikon and Canon". Here in Singapore, I see most pros shoot with the 6D or the 5D III. I had thought that going with the pros' choice, I can't be far wrong but the RX100 III changed my perception. Hope to get a good deal at the coming IT Show on Thursday. Thanks for your input.

Michael, welcome to UHH!! It's a great forum for learning and exchanging ideas. If you type in "Sony Shooters" in the search bar, you will come up with 17 pages of Sony users that discuss everything Sony. I shoot with the Alpha 99 and the NEX-6 and love them both!!

Welcome!

It is not just a two-player game, but the two have definitely dominated the game. Sony makes some great products, I also have the RX-100 (version 1). For interchangeable lenses, I think Sony is still trying to figure out its identity to a certain extent: Alpha or NEX (A or E mount), in camera stabilization or lens based, DSLR or mirrorless. I'm not the person who goes to the Apple store for each new iPhone, I keep a phone for several years until it breaks. So I like that my Nikon lenses from two decades ago are still useful, and while my current lenses may not be in use in 20 years, I fully expect that mine will be the last to be obsolete.

If I weren't already committed to the Canon full-frame and Olympus/Panasonic m4/3rds systems, I would seriously consider the Fujifilm XT-1. It's such a break-though camera, that I'm even considering selling my m4/3rds system and switching to Fuji. If there ever was a DSLR killer, this would be the one. In my view, this makes the optical viewfinders and flopping mirrors of DSLRs appear outdated.

Of course you are going to see more Nikon and Canon users here. Canon and Nikon are number 1 and 2 respectively in dslr sales. That doesn't mean that Sony or Pentax don't make great products. There are just fewer of them out there.

Michael, I shoot with a Canon. Why? Let me give some of the reasons. First, every camera made today will do what I want to do, but I won't shoot anything else, including Nikon. So, again, why?
Example, I checked Craig's List last night, looking for a used 5d mkll. There were 15 of them. I can get pretty much any Canon lens made, used, in a matters of hours. There are 4 factory centers in the US alone. I could have any question about a Canon, ask here, and have fifty people using my camera that will reply in one day! I can call Canon and talk to a tech right now. Is the camera better? Who cares! It's good enough. It's all the periferals that matter to me. If I want a new Tamron 150-600 for the weekend, I can get it. For a Sony, they will probably never make it. Even for Nikon, who knows when it will be available. there are as many aftermarket products made for a Canon as there are Apple Apps! And I won't even mention the real reason I shoot a Canon.
Michael, you can get any camera you want and it will be fine. If you gotta be different, it's OK, be different. But small companies, are just that, small companies making great products. Are the products better? No. Are the companies smaller? Yes. And some of their camera divisions are struggling to keep up with Canon. I hope they all make it ;-)
SS
PS, I too have used a Pentax, but that was a long time ago, in a land, far, far away!

Michael - welcome. Just an update, the EF24-105mm has the red stripe, but this lens is black. Wish I had something witty to bring you back to the Canon camp .... The Sony examples I've seen are all excellent and I don't think you'd go wrong going outside the big two with a Sony choice.

Good Luck with your new camera purchase! I have the Sony A65 and I love it! Before this, I had the A35 and it was great too! And I still have my trusty A230...like my old Maxxum 7xi it'll probably be with me forever. I don't care if Canon and Nikon have more lenses available, all I care is the 4-5 that I want/need are available for Sony...and they are...cheaper than Canon and Nikon because I can get older Minolta A-mount lenses off eBay that will work with my A65V. And lets face it, Minolta may have been #3, but they had darn good glass!

Bingo! Just because they make more doesn't mean you need them all.
Sony makes great stuff too. I just happened to start using Nikons before Sony made cameras and stuck with the brand.
