to be honest that looks more like camera movement.

Vibration control might not of been clicked on.

The words on the signs seem to be the biggest issue and they were not moving but you or the camera might of been.

Looks like you used existing light which was pretty good If that shot had been flash the horse and rider would of been upset (just kidding).

It really does look like camera movement.

Just a guess though

Vibration control was on (I double checked that) but I still might have moved a bit... Thanks for your input and assistance!

Tommy - my first reaction was it looks like vibration, but you also have some color fringing going on - seen clearly in the passing pickup truck at the top. I would get the lens looked at, if I were you. Hope you looked at my replacement recommendations. You might be able to find something there, to suit your needs.

I did see your recommendations, and I will start doing my research on these suggestions. And now I know I won't be getting a 2.8 tele lens for $500!! :-)

Any chance you could post the data from one of those out of focus shots? One of us might spot something that could help you out.

Here's the data sheet and one of the shots I referred to. I tried to attach the photo as a RAW file but it wouldn't load, so I added it as a .jpg. Thanks!

Do you really nee a crutch like autofocus?

Yes, for moving subjects I really am very marginal at manually focusing and getting any kind of decent result.

Should be using the continuous focusing mode for moving subjects... I think Nikon calls it "AF-C" (Canon calls it "AI Servo"). Since the focus is continuously updating to track moving subjects, there's no "focus confirmation" beep with this mode.

Thanks for the great advice, Alan! I was using AF-C mode, and back-button focusing, and would (attempt to) refocus each time I changed the focal length. Still don't know why the lens was dancing around the focal point once it was initially set. Even on a stationary object (fence and standing cowboy at the rodeo) I could never get the lens to zero in on a specific focal point - just racked back and forth and never settled on the proper point. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my query in such detail, and I guess I'll keep trying stuff until I find out what is wrong - and it very well could be pilot error! :-)

I currently use a Nikon D7100 and one of my lenses is a Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-300 4.5 G ED where the autofocus motor in the lens has apparently crapped out. Manual focus works OK, but the AF will pick a focal point and then bounce around that spot, rendering the shots slightly out of focus. This does not occur with any of my other lenses, so I think the lens is the culprit. I would appreciate any recommendations for a replacement lens, preferably in the range of $500 or so. I would like to go to a 2.8 and can spend a bit more if that's what it takes. I primarily photograph landscapes, old buildings, and birds, hopefully in flight. I took a bunch of action pictures at a recent rodeo with this lens and NONE of them were in focus! Extremely unhappy about that! I am not a professional but a passionate amateur, and I don't want that to happen again! Thanks for any assistance, mates.

Wait until the is a new function available that will make a difference in your workflow. I wanted to explore bracketing, but my Nikon D60 would not support, so I moved up to the D7100. I realized that a Dx camera was hindering my ability to take amazing landscape shots, so I upgraded to a D810. Ask them what type of photography they do, and more importantly, what they want to achieve. Then choose to upgrade.

What about a Dx camera hinders your ability in landscape photography? I have a D7100 and am curious as to what advantages the D810 might have with respect to landscapes? Thanks for any input you might provide!

Read the manual...all of it! I know, boring, boring, boring, but...knowledge of your camera will free you to quit thinking so much about settings and concentrate more on your subjects. And I agree - YouTube is a wonderful resource and I use it extensively.

I take photographs because it is good for my soul, I'm outdoors, I look at things in new and fresh ways when I'm shooting, and when I capture that one amazing, timeless shot, I feel a sense of awe and wonder, much like magic. Other than that, it just makes me feel good!

I wholeheartedly agree - Thanks for your service on that "vacation" to Vietnam. We can never repay the debt we owe to our service men and women who gave it all so that we could be free to go out and take pictures!
