I heard North of durango is beautiful and scenic. a train ride from Durango to silverton is also remarkable.

Mesa verde is on our route.

I've been following this thread, very interesting. We're also planning a trip to Utah's Southwest for next fall. Three's been lots of good suggestions given.

Several years ago my husband and I took the Narrow Gauge Train ride from Durango to Silverton, it was in the fall and the colors were beautiful. I would recommended the train ride too. Then we took the scenic drive from Durango to Ouray...beautiful. Lots to see. Have fun!

I have the PU-20 plate and needed an extended plate. I found what I needed on http://www.argraph.com. They're a wholesale site, but you'll find what you need there and then you can order from B&H. Hope that helps.

I have a Sirui PH-20 tripod head that I use for my Canon 500mm lens. I use the plates that came with the head, but last time in Yellowstone, a photographer had an extended plate that gave his lens more stablilty by having a longer surface area. Lucky him..his friend had made it for him.
Any ideas on where I would get a longer plate. Have not seen any on the obvious sites. Thank you.

It's always risky to suggest what another traveler should take/use because whatever you take, there will likely be a situation you'll say, "I sure wish I had my ........ with me". (You can fill in any item including lenses in the ...........).
It is my experience, and this is from many, many trips (my wife is in the travel business) I would just take the 28 - 300 mm. It will serve you very well covering about every aspect of what you'll need.
I know without a doubt, however, you're in for a fantastic trip.

Ted, Thanks again for your help. It's always nice to get suggestions from someone who has been there and well traveled. I'm sure it will be a fantastic trip. Lou

You will have just a super time of it, I'm sure. Visiting other cultures with camera in hand.....can't get too much better. Currently for travel, I have a D800 and 28-300 zoom lens. I do not enjoy having to haul around a lot of extra lenses ~ weight and safety (theft). Changing lenses on the 'fly' will at times cause a missed photo too. There certainly times that I wish I had a much wider or longer lens, and the quality of using prime lenses will increase, but for me, the zoom seems to work well.

Thanks for stopping by and posting ~ look forward to
seeing some of your work when you get back.

I have the D600 and I the 28-300 lens. I was planning on taking it for sure. I thought about taking my 24-70, but I haven't decided. I'm leaning toward not taking it. Again, Thanks and I enjoyed seeing your shots. Lou

Nice shots. I really like the blue window frame. I'll be going on a Greek and Turkey cruise in June. I was wondering what lens you took? Thanks, Lou
