Welcome to UHH.

While most of us would recommend APS-C or FF cameras, no one has quoted the old adage, the best camera is the one you are carrying. I am a Canon user, so my main camera is an EOS 80D (APS-C, over $600) but there are times I prefer something more portable, so I also have an SX50HS, a mega-zoom. Today that would be replaced by the SX60HS ($480). I could have gone smaller, but I insisted on a camera with a viewfinder and hot shoe. The zoom lens covers an exhaustive range. You can advance your knowledge of photography as such a camera allows full manual as well as full auto shooting, and most everything in between.

It depends on your priorities. My previous camera was a Rebel T2i, and today's models (T5i, T6i) are highly recommended, but new with a 18-55mm kit lens are $650 and $750. The T6 is an entry level camera with some functions stripped but is $500 with 18-55 kit lens. You might find the 18-135mm kit lens more to your liking, for some extra $ on any of the mentioned cameras.

Comparisons of all choices are in order to best suit YOUR needs, not ours.

One way to thin the herd - seriously though, a shame for the innocents that get caught up in another's stupidity!

Exposure is controlled by how much time the shutter is open and how wide the aperture is.

It cannot be changed after the shutter release is pressed.

You are referring to brightness, not exposure. (It does make a difference.)

Technically correct, but picky. I'm sure you got the meaning, exposure as it appears to be in the image file.

A thought - does exposure compensation work in manual exposure??

Although RAW was used, to see an image it must be converted (TIFF or the like) and that can affect exposure - just sayin'

Why in heaven's name would anyone buy ANYTHING from 42nd Street Photo with the absolutely terrible reputation they have???

To answer your question, it had the lowest advertised price and I hadn't heard about their reputation. Now I know.

The range of my lens, sort of...:) What do you guys think? I didn't touch anything up and I didn't crop anything obviously. Just took these for Lens perspective.

As noted above, 35 and 85 are reasonable for full sensors. A 35mm on a Nikon APS-C is equiv to 50 X 1.5 = 52.5mm on a full frame. 50mm is considered normal.

That is interesting if you typically take photos at 20 ft, which is rather far for portraits. The closest to a portrait is 20ft at 280mm. If I do my math right, that would give the same magnification as 10 ft at 140mm, or 5 ft at 70mm.

I would recommend taking a series of shots at different focal lengths at the distance you would typically take portraits. Do the same for landscapes. That should give you a good idea as to what suits you best.

I experienced a similar situation buying a Canon EOS 80D from 42nd St. Photo last month (before the sale). I saw no marking to indicate grey market. They called before they shipped to ask if I wanted the American warranty for $200 more, which I took. Bait and switch. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

This got the Red assist light on the strobe to work. It did not get the white light on the front of the body to work in low light with no strobes set to work.

From Canon:
To properly test whether the camera is functioning correctly, set the Custom Function 7 to [0: Enable] and remove the external flash from the camera's hot shoe. Test the camera by taking a couple of shot in low-light to see whether the on-board flash fires those short bursts. Another suggestion would be to reset the camera. To reset the EOS Rebel T2i, please follow the steps below:
1. Turn the camera on in <P> Program AE, then press the <MENU> button.
2. Select the [Set-up 3] tab.
3. Select [Clear settings], then press the <SET> button.
4. Select [Clear all camera settings], then press the <SET> button.
5. Select [OK], then press the <SET> button.
To clear the camera's Custom Functions:
1. Press the <MENU> button.
2. Select the [Set-up 3] tab.
3. Select [Clear settings], then press the <SET> button.
4. Select [Clear all Custom Func. (C.Fn)], then press the <SET> button.
Now turn the camera OFF and remove the battery pack, memory card, and detach the lens. Attach the body cap on the camera and allow it to rest for approximately 20 minutes. Once that time has elapsed, insert the battery pack, memory card, and re-attach the lens. Turn the camera ON and test it once more.

ISO should be sensitivity only. White balance (degrees Kelvin) is separate. This is for film or digital. However, I did say should be.

HELP! Problem still exists. I did find a setting for the assist light, Custom Fn III 7, however, it is set to "assist: enable". Any more thoughts???

While there will always be a market for the consumer camera, more and more users are using their smartphone and we should expect this trend to continue. This past weekend I attended a Renaissance Fair and while I did see the Nikon or Canon, the majority of pics were being taken on iPhones and/or Samsungs. Plus, you can send your photo immediately and while I can do lot with my D7000 that my cellphone can't handle, most folks are more than happy with the cellphone pic.

It seems to me that many cell phone users have no idea that there are variables like white balance, depth of field and how to control it, or stop action and how to achieve it. Whether or not this is so, most cell phones and tablets do not provide the user these controls.

Alan "Another factor... your 80D has far better low-light focus capability than the T2i. One or more of the 80D's AF sensors are able to focus at -3EV (moonlight, essentially). I don't know exactly, but the T2i is probably only able to focus down to -0.5EV. That's typical of other Canon cameras of that time and type. (In fact, only more recent models such as 6D, 5DIII, 7DII and a few others have been able to focus to -3EV.)"

This would explain the 80D not firing the aid when the T2i does.

Do you have Al Servio on? It only works with one shot AF.

No - Auto Servo is NOT on.
I noticed, the white light on the body doesn't illuminate either when there is no flash.
