I also researched on the Internet on the two brands and Nikon edged out Canon based on my research for what I wanted.
In the end it is your decision and your money don't depend on this post you made here deciding for you. Either brand is good and neither one will make your pictures again only you can do that.

You also said distant which would imply no discernible characters with which to identify the person anyway in which case you would not need a release even for commercial use

Too much time spent on pixel peeping takes away from shooting. I see way to much of this worry on equipment and such. You buy what you can afford in equipment and make the best of it you can.

You mean storage space correct and not memory? I would say backup old files and remove them to free up storage space.
