wjames, I will make things worse for you. Google "photoshop tutorials layers free" and you will now spend the next month learning more than what you ever wanted to know about layers!

Quality and relevance vary considerably but you should find one or two that will be perfect for you today. By time Thanksgiving dinner wears off, you will be an expert and we will be asking you how to use layers.

Good luck.

Ahhh...plug ins...that makes sense. I have photoshop 7.0 How do you find plug ins? Just search? on Google? Do you thing the elements plug ins that you all are talking about will work?

I suggest that you invest in PS CS5.5. By time you buy the plug-in's, you will more than have paid for PS. The improvements are quite substantial because PS 7 is about five versions and five to ten years obsolete.

I own only one plug-in: Viveza 2. While being a little easier to use than PS, it does not do anything that PS cannot do. I do not know if this is true of other plug-in's but do not be deceived that they have some kind of mojo that PS does not have. With all the free tutorials out there, you can learn to do just about anything you want with PS. After some practice, you may be as good with PS as any plug-in. After all, you have to learn them too.

This probably confuses the matter for you but good luck in making your photos look better.

xpane... As it was just a test, I used the Canon 18-55 kit lens. Did not record the settings.

Your metadata tell all. No longer need to write anything down. Most programs read your metadata and many will even show you where the lens focused.

I don't have a problem with Canon manuals.. but I like your idea--maybe it is larger print! the tiny print in the Canon manual is giving me a headache.

Here is an advantage to the small manual: keep it in your camera bag. You never know when you will want it.

Make sure the camera is on. Does a red light on the back flicker?

The Nik software suite will save you a lot of learning on Photoshop, especially when it comes to making selections because Nik has what they call U-point. It is a plugin for Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom and Aperture.

I thought Viveza 2 would be the ultimate tool for local control of brightness, contrast and the like. It is if you can mask off as a circle. Consequently, I use both PS and Viveza depending upon the shape of the mask.

When it works, it is great. I use the content-aware fill for the white around the merged result. It avoids cropping that leads to an elongated image; a more natural result. Sometimes it errs so a little cloning is needed. Overall, the effects are awesome.

Congratulations!

I bought mine in August and love it. I am still reading the book because it has so many features.

Enjoy and post those pictures.

Photoshop is the professional choice and every photographer should learn it. It is very hard to master. You will not be able to get the most out of it without reading a few books. Scott Kelby has photoshop down. Etter than most photographers. He wrote a book. Called "The photoshop cs book for digital photographers". It is not written with all the technical bs that we photographers dont care about like many ps books. I highly recommed it for everyone that shoots digital. For about $40 bucks, its a steal. Just biy the book..trust me. As far as the program, drop a ton of cash if you want, bit it is my belief that adobe puts it out there so unprotected in hopes we amatures pirate it. They do this to create a base line of users. The only people that pay for the software are organizations and licenced business. This is not stealing, they set it like this for a reason. Simply hack the program for a fully functional version, buy the book, and learn it.
Photoshop is the professional choice and every pho... (show quote)

I resent Rhino's attitude. As one who purchases legitimate copies of PS and many other programs, Rhino is wrong to steal and advocate stealing programs and I do not like subsidizing people who do. Moreover, he does not understand business and his grammar and spelling are an embarrassment. He should be ashamed for his attitudes and skills.

I, for one, would like to see him booted off this forum.

Does anyone have any idea WHY photoshop is structured to be so difficult to use? There must be a way to create such a useful program without all the tangles.....

My theory is that PS goes back to the very beginning of WYSIWYG interfaces on the Mac. User interfaces were brand new and had not evolved to where they are today. PS rapidly became the standard so Adobe had little incentive to improve the usability. Along with this, PS gives you so much control over most of the adjustments plus a lot more adjustments than you can figure out how to use. For example, how many of us have figured out all the blending modes!

Fortunately, you can find a lot of great online tutorials and other vendors have made convenient alternatives if you do not want or need all the bells and whistles of PS.

Where did you buy the camera? New or used?

Sounds like you did not get all the accessories. If it is like the other Canon's, it ships with a USB cable. You will find a rubber-like door on one edge. Open that up to expose the USB connector.

I am concerned that popping the memory card in and out all the time may damage the contacts.

I have been using CorelDRAW and Illustrator for fifteen years and as far as I am concerned Corel has Illustrator beat by far. It is so much easier to use and does a lot of what AI does. I have played with PhotoPaint which is easier to use than Photoshop but revert to PS because of the abundance of tutorials, tips and tricks available.

Corel has such a better user-interface and has much more product for a lot less money but the reality is that Adobe is the 800 pound gorilla in the room. David and Goliath, Microsoft and Apple, Intel and AMD.

Another thought on this. I prefer darker, blurred backgrounds for my flowers. This style hightlights the flower. Backgrounds of similar brightness and sharpness to the flower draws the eye away from the main subject. This is just a matter of artistic license.
