If you like old steam engines, check out the Threshermen's Reunion in Kinzers, PA. They have dozens and dozens of steam-powered traction engines along with all sorts of other very interesting machines. Park in a field and ride on a trailer behind a farm tractor to the gate. Lunch served by Amish ladies. Don't miss the noon whistle when all the engines simultaneously blow their whistles! Very, very loud. Link on this page- https://roughandtumble.org/eventdetails

I will be attending my niece's high school graduation soon at the Magnus Arena in Denver. I can't take a camera bag, but I can take a camera with a lens attached. I have no idea where I'll be sitting relative to the "action". I've never been to the Magnus Arena so have no idea what sort of lighting to expect (though my guess it it won't be great).

I'll be shooting with a Canon R5 and I have two potential lenses I could take for this event. First is my RF 70-200 f/4 (one of the few times I wish it was a 2.8), or I could use my EF 135 f/2. On the one hand, the 70-200 is only F4, but I'm wondering if I could compensate with higher ISO given the R5 is pretty good at high ISO and there are good denoise programs I could use in post. The 70-200 has the advantage of being a Zoom.

The 135 f/2 is a much brighter lens, but it's fixed focal length, which might not be a problem depending on where we end up sitting. I could turn the "crop factor" on and off to have some control over "reach" (135mm and 216mm), but it's not as flexible as a real Zoom. The benefit of the 135 is of course that it is 2 full stops brighter than the f4 so I could shoot at two-stops lower ISO (less noise) compared to the f4.

Has anyone here ever shot any events at the Magnus Arena, and if so, what would you recommend?

Or you could rent something for the occasion. If they allow detachable lenses, get the 2.8 you want. If they don't then rent a "bridge" camera that has a super zoom. Lensrentals.com is great. I agree that the best photographs might be before and after the main event. Remember to enjoy the event in spite of the photographic distractions and good luck!

If the file shows up with the Denoise icon in finder that means the OS is set to send the file to Denoise as default.

In finder, right click on the file and choose 'Get Info'. About halfway down the resulting dialog there will be a section called 'Open with'. There will be a field with the name of the app that the system will send the file to when you double click it. On the right of that field there is a up/down arrow. Clicking on that will give you a list of apps, and you can select one to be the app you want to send the file to. Just below that is another selection that will change the target app of all files of that type. Click on 'Change All' to do that. You can then close the 'Get Info' dialog (command-w).

Thank you, DirtFarmer. I'll work on this again tomorrow and I'll try to follow your ideas. I'm out of time for today and have to get ready for other things. There has to be some way to get them back but if I can't figure that out then they will simply be gone. I hate to lose 143 files.

Without a video tape of your actions, we have nothing to review of what might have happened. If the back-up copy was made as a copy of the originals before any edit actions, it would seem the images are corrupt and Topaz has nothing to do with corrupting image files on a camera card.

A videotape of me doing post-processing would be significantly more boring than watching paint dry and, as I mentioned, it has worked for years. Perhaps Topaz has nothing to do with the problem but each lost file has the Topaz symbol on it and none of the others, which all are fine, have that mark, which makes me suspicious that Topaz must have stepped in somehow.

I'll work on it again tomorrow. I've run out of time tonight. I appreciate your help and persistence, though!

If this is your workflow, you've been lucky you've never lost files before. Hopefully, you can see the riskiness of erasing files before you have two confirmed copies, and will amend your ways. Especially, if these images are important and you can't recover the original copies.

If you're editing the images in PhotoShop, where is the corresponding PSD? You probably don't need IMAGE123.NEF, if the current version of the image is now IMAGE123.PSD.

I don't lose files which is why this is so puzzling and troubling. I have backups on two hard drives and they are both grayed out the same. I looked on my cards and those images are not on the cards that still have images. I guess I've lost them. I'll be deleting Topaz in the hope that prevents it from taking over any other files.

In order to get them into Photoshop I have to start by opening them in Bridge and that is where the D symbol is. When I try to open them directly into Photoshop I get the window that says it doesn't recognize the file. They are all .NEF files.

I'll have to go back to the cards and see if I still have them on there. I generally clear the cards after putting them on external hard drives so I can re-use the cards. I have used the same work flow for years and not had this problem.

A NEF file is a RAW file from a Nikon camera. If you're an Adobe subscriber, either the PS or LR software should be capable of opening any NEF file ever created, unless maybe you bought a newly released Nikon just yesterday. What happens when you open these files in a digital editor? If you're not a subscriber, what software are you using for editing?

I have used Bridge and Photoshop for years, most recently for a year or more with a Z7ii. I've been processing these files for a couple of weeks with no problems until now. I don't know what a digital editor is. I have the Adobe suite but only use these two programs from it.

In Windows Explorer, you can hit the view button and choose to see the files as ICONs (or thumbnails if you are set up correctly) or as filenames. Either way, double click on one of the files and see if it opens.

Also, how do you store your files? Do you dump them all into one folder, or do you distribute them into their own folders?

I think Explorer may be a PC program and I'm on a Mac. If I double click on one I get a small window that tells me that Photoshop does not recognize this type of file. I store my files on external hard drives.

I'm out of my depth here. They are grayed out but show up as .NEF files. I don't know how to take a jpeg of the list of files. I could take a cell phone picture but I don't know how to attach it here. I'm sorry I just don't know computers well.

Topaz Denoise is not a camera, nor a file type. Step out of bridge and determine the actual file names / file type. That technical detail is needed for anyone to be helpful. Uninstalling the Topaz software is unlikely to have an effect, being unlikely Topaz is the root-cause of the issue.

Thank you, Paul. I appreciate your quick reply. I am not a technical person so I have no way to figure out what kind of file it now is. Each file shows up with the big "D" symbol of Topaz Denoise so it has to have something to do with it. I don't want to call Adobe because they will just say it's a Topaz problem which won't get me anywhere. My lack of technical understanding really leaves me stuck (again).

I recently shot a lot of photographs on a foreign trip. I am now post-processing and find that Adobe Bridge cannot recognize some of the files because they have apparently been taken by Topaz Denoise. I tried to use that program once a year ago and never again after I saw the result. When I look at my drive the effected files are grayed out. So, is there any way to make the photographs appear so I can use them? If I delete Denoise from my computer will that fix the problem? Topaz doesn't have any customer service (I've been waiting a year for their promised callback) so I can't ask them.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Imagemeister beat me to it! I use the Feisol CT-3442 as a travel tripod. It folds up to fit easily into my suitcase and it's very light. I use it with a Z7II with lenses up to 400mm on an RRS BH-25 Ball Head with no problem. I've had it in Costa Rica, all over this country, and it will be in Cuba next month. I have no hesitation to use it. A friend has it as her only tripod with the same ball head and loves it. Feisol is American made, if that's important to you, and based in Wilmington, NC. I also have a larger and heavier Feisol for car trips but I carry that around a lot, too. If it doesn't come with a hook on the bottom, install one and hang your camera bag on it to steady it in a wind.
