Snapple Real Fact #997:
"Gentoo penguins propose to their life mates with a pebble."

I remember watching a nature show many years ago where a penguin came up and dropped a pebble at one of the researchers feet during the filming. Had almost forgotten that scene until you jogged the memory.

Found a thesis on the Breton language online. A 'gwastell' is a type of cake.

Not in the petroleum business but there was a story on the local news about this a few years ago. The distributor that brings in the gas from the refinery sets the price, so if a gas station is part of their network they have to charge the preset price. An individual station (at that time) was earning about 3 to 5 cents per gallon.

Sunset on the Catalina Mountains. Taken with a Sigma P210 P&S outside of my work.

Fungus is a killer for sure, though sometimes you can keep the worst of it in an out of focus part of the scene. And, not all photos have to be sharp. At least you don’t have much invested. I don’t remember what mine cost, too long ago. The glass is still clear.

It was actually in a box of lenses I picked up at Goodwill. Somebody must have been a collector because there was also a pre-production copy of the Vivitar 50mm f1.8 by Cosina. (Who'd of thought, a rare 50mm)
As far as the 250mm goes, it's decent enough for general use but shows it's flaws with only a modest amount of zooming in on the PC monitor. I try to avoid overcooking in post but I might have to try getting aggressive with the clarity and see if that helps. Guess I have an excuse to take it out for a walk.

Sad about the damage.
I guess the sharpest title is safe.
Interesting to learn about such rare lenses.
What is the full name of the Vivitar lens?
I would like to look it up and read about it.

The second link follows the research that identified it as a Norita.

I have the T2 mount Vivitar branded lens, No. 69210

Mine is slightly older - no. 68417. Gave the princely sum of $3.50 for it.

I have a rare Vivitar Double Window 250mm made by Norita. Apparently Vivitar bought up Norita's excess inventory as a one time purchase so it was never listed in any Vivitar literature and hardly ever shows up in online Vivitar catalogues. Unfortunately mine had a fungus infection that etched the rear element so it produces fairly soft images.

From what I understand, the new 500mm mirror lenses are all made by Samyang no matter what the brand. The quality is hit and miss. A quality vintage lens will outperform a new Samyang by a large margin.

I couldn't pass up the bargain. Yesterday my wife and I were passing a local antique shop and it was going out of business. They had a cabinet with a bunch of old cameras and accessories. I started browsing through gear...most of which held no interest for me...and came across an old Spiratone 400mm, f6.3 lens in pristine condition. It was marked $35.00. At 50% off, I bought it for $17.50. It was a T-mount and fully manual, including the iris which, once selected needed to be stopped down by moving a ring on the lens body. It also had a tripod mount collar. Well, I have a M4/3 adapter. So last night I put the whole thing together and tried it out. It shows promise. Not super sharp, but I wasn't working under the best conditions and was shooting a half-moon at a very high ISO. I'm anxious to see how it performs in daylight. I'll post something if it turns out to be as good a lens as the price.

Spiratone marketed it as the 'Sharpshooter.' I bought one at Goodwill a couple years ago for $10.00. Somewhat soft but fun to use.

Thanks for sharing your technique. I do something similar, only using a vintage Kodak copy stand as my tripod doesn't have a flexible center column.

Not exactly a defect, but I have a 28mm Vivitar made by Cosina that's labeled with a serial number QMOD instead of the normal 09xxxx pattern. QMOD is short for Quality Management & Organizational Development, so it appears to be a preproduction sample. Too bad there's no way to find out how it got out into the 'wild'.
