Avoiding the reference historical photos in stacks of magazine and books

I have an interest in old Western photos and paintings. Rather than trying to remember which stack of books or journals a series of photos are located, I place the magazine or book on the floor or on a short table and photograph the image with my 24-105mm Canon L. If necessary, I attach extension tubes. With “live view”, I can move the image into proper position. I always cover the subject with a piece of non-reflective glass and hope for a cloudy day to do my copying. Of course, I shoot off a tripod and set the timer or use a cable release. With Photo Shop CC and its “Crop Tool”, the editing is not too complicated. I add the specifics about the image at a later date with Breeze Browser in the IPTC settings. Under Not Circumstances do I consider selling or marketing any of the images. I just like to view them—now and then. Notice in the attach, a photo that includes the Western artist, Charles E. Russell and his wife, in the center of the image.

Thanks for sharing your technique. I do something similar, only using a vintage Kodak copy stand as my tripod doesn't have a flexible center column.

You could put the source on the back of the image when framing or name the image file with the name of the magazine and volume. That way you could tell others 'where it came from'. Just a thought

I believe it's Will Rogers as well. Charles M Russel does look a little bit like Will though. Russel has a very nice museum in Great Falls, MT. Thanks for your technique on photographing mags. Every time I tried they always came out messed up.

It is Charles M. Russell and Nancy Russell. Reference: Autry Museum of the American West, Los Angles, CA. I have several photos paintings by Charles M. Russell that I photographed with the system I have mentioned. Charles is a gift to early Western American art.

Thanks for correcting my misidenification. I can now add myself to the countless thousands who have also mixed them up. There is a picture of them together at one of the movie studios(Paramount I think) during filming. They could have been brothers.....Thanks again.
