Having seen some of Bob's work here on UHH, ' satisfactory' for him generally means ' outstanding' for most of the rest of us hobbyists.

Buck up, Chief, you may be down but you're certainly not out, work your other projects and learn some new photography techniques so you'll be even better and bolder when you're cleared for duty!

Oh, and here's a quick shot of my boys in the cave at our campsite.

We took our time going down, making sure to turn around, often, to see the view behind us. Again, amazing.

On the road again, on our way to Pecos, Texas.

So, we went in today, did the walking path down, OH. MY. GOD. Absolutely amazing. Stunning. Why did I wait so long to come here. Only complaint was the tourists racing to get to the bottom, with flashlights, making as much noise as possible, and missing some awesome stuff. Why bother taking that route if you're just going to ignore it? And everyone, you're right, the D750 is amazing in low light, I love it. Too tired to upload anything tonight, will do so in the next couple of days.

Drove in last night, staying at a BLM campground, taking the kids to the caverns today. Any advise on camera settings? 12 yr old son is shooting Nikon D3000, 10 yr old, D60, both have kit lenses, I'm using my D750 w/28-300. Sunrise is gorgeous, by the way.

I went well off the beaten path trying to find shots that 'spoke' to me.

The funny part is, I hate snow, and cold. I got blown up back in 06, with 2nd, 3rd and 4th degree burns on 28%of my body, so cold causes me no end of grief.

Nope, this kinda has me hooked on the Grand Canyon in winter, beautiful landscapes, and no crowds!

It is now May 7th, and having invested this much time reading every post in this thread, am really curious as to the outcome. Camera, lens, or user error?

I'm glad to see that the dark side of life didn't get you down. And that the insight at the Grand Canyon has had such a positive influence. We are hoping to start our RV retirement this summer and go see the sights before we are too old. Post some photos. Maybe we will cross paths. And I like your signature line. Enjoy!

Well, the fact that it was February and this is what we say certainly didn't hurt...

Greetings. You lucked out. Make the best of what time you have left. Photography is interesting. You can slowly teach yourself-by reading enough books, watching enough videos, getting enough tips from others, experimenting with enough photos, etc-or you can take a course. Your local college, university, or community college may be able to help. For distance education, consider the New York Institute Of Photography. Let us know what you do from here on. Good luck.

I did in fact luck out. With everything that happened earlier in the year with other family members, I paid attention to the warning signs, and made it to the hospital in time. Still a close thing, though. 90 seconds after I came through the ER doors I coded. They worked on me for almost 10 minutes before they could re- establish a rhythm, then rush me to emergency surgery. 98% blockage of the LAD artery, 3 stents in same. Yeah, I know how lucky I am, and don't plan to waste a single day from here forward.

I would suggest that you use Youtube to learn. There are a lot of really good content providers who can help you on this journey and provide inspiration and education. Some of these are really, really good photographers -- should mention that most are in the landscape genre which what I am most interested in.

Here are some that I follow regularly:

Adam Gibbs
Attilio Ruffo
fototripper
Nick Page
Scott Davenport
Jim Nix
Thomas Heaton
Mads Peter Iverson
Nigel Danson
Photo Tom
Simon Baxter
Simon Booth
Matt Granger
Gary Gough
Jared Polin

One of the first things I did was start searching on YouTube, it's a great resource, once you sift through the chaff of influencers that don't really teach anything. I'm familiar with Matt Granger, really like his stuff, especially his budgetography stuff, Heaton and Danson are good, UHH's own Steve Perry is really good especially if you're a Nikon shooter like I am, and FroKnowsPhoto? Yeah, he pretty much covers all aspects. I like to learn all the little tricks I can, on a serious disability budget, so can't really go out and get that $1500 lens, have to make do with what I've got. Luckily, what I've got is pretty good, it's amazing what you can get from Goodwill online auctions.

As I read your introduction I didn't take what you wrote as a search for sympathy but as someone who has come to understand in an up close and personal way that life is too short and you should enjoy each and every day you have with those you love doing the things that make you happy.

I wish you the greatest joy and wonderful adventure in the days ahead. Carpe diem, indeed!!!

Dodie

Thanks , Dodie. Never thought in my wildest dreams I'd be dead at 50, especially since I have always tried to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I have 6 very good reasons to keep going, from my beautiful wife to my 5 kids still at home, from age 15 ,down to 6 months. Time to live life, and teach my kids how to be decent, caring individuals with the skills they need to prosper at whatever they decide to do.

Without breaking the bank, I'd suggest either a D7200 if you want to stay with DX format, or a D750 if you want to move up to FX (Full Frame). Other items may be just as good, or even better in some ways, but would probably cost more. Shop around, and consider buying a used, refurbished, item. I have both a D7200, and a D750, and I have no regrets concerning either of them. Let us know what you decide.

You beat me to it, this was pretty much EXACTLY what I was going to say.
