I have been shooting Canon cameras since the AE1. I am not a professional and have been brand loyal. This past week Canon told Vitrox to quit making RF lenses and Tamron has made the decision to not make any RF lenses and I suspect that Sigma will follow suit. In my opinion, this is Canon creating a monopoly. I don't like being told what I can and can buy. I have the EOS R and was waiting for the EOS R update. One reason I stayed with Canon is that I love the articulating screen. I don't want to give this up. What other cameras also have fully articulating screens?

It looks like Vitrox was infringing on Canon's patent! Go to www.canonrumors.com

Here is Canon Rumor's article:Canon Germany addresses recent Viltrox RF mount lens demands, and it’s a case of patent infrigement
By Canon Rumors | September 6, 2022 | Canon Lens News

Last week a bunch of reports hit the web about Viltrox being told to stop producing lenses for the RF mount by Canon. In an exclusive report, German magazine Photografix has received word from Canon Germany about the issue.

It looks like it affects autofocus lenses being made for the RF mount and patent infringement. What the exactly Viltrox was infringing on is unknown. Rokinon continues to sell AF lenses for the RF mount.

From Canon Germany (Google Translated)
“SHENZHEN JUEYING TECHNOLOGY CO.LTD, manufactures auto focus lenses for Canon RF mount under the brand name “Viltrox”. Canon believes that these products infringe their patent and design rights and has therefore requested the company to stop all activities infringing on Canon’s intellectual property rights.”

So what does this mean for the likes of SIGMA and Tamron producing RF mount lesnes? We don’t think this clears much up at all. Until we hear from the “big two” third-party brands or more from Canon themselves, we’re all left wondering.

I have PSE 2020 and wondering if buying PSE 2022 is that much improved?
Any hint when PSE 2023 coming out

The new versions usually come out in October or November. The major changes are made to the tricks and adjustments under "Quick" or "Guided". The tools under "Expert" stay pretty much the same and upon occasion will add a few extra features like "Haze Removal". You might as well wait until the 2023 version comes out and watch for the discount price of about $60 versus $99.

I've used Elements since 13 and get a new update each year. I have never had this problem with any edition of Elements.

The book "Understanding Flash Photography -- How to shoot great photographers using flash" by Bryan Peterson is an outstanding and most helpful book. I know Amazon carries it an other sources. I have given away many of my photo books that I do not use. However, this book is a GEM and I am keeping it!

Joe: I had the same problems and found a very helpful book "Understanding Flash Photography" How to Shoot Great Photographs Using Electronic Flash by Bryan Peterson. It is available through Amazon at about $24 in print form and about $14 in electronic form. I have given away many of my photography books but this one is a keeper and I will not even loan it out!

Are you shooting in RAW? I do not think that Windows has a codec that will read the new Canon R5 raw files? Try using the Canon utility software for your camera and see if that resolves the problem. Otherwise, Windows should read all jpg files.

It is not the brand of VDN filter. You need to make sure that you do not rotate the outer ring beyond the markings or the cross will appear. Remember that the filter will rotate 360 degrees but you can only use it between the markings on the outer ring. I had to learn the hard way and buy two filters.

The guide for minimum handheld shutter speed without VR/IS is 1/focal length. For instance, at 300mm your shutter speed should be at least 1/300 second for a full frame camera.

For APS-C the crop factor needs to be taken into consideration --Canon's crop factor is 1.6 and Nikon is 1.5. Multiply the crop factor times the focal length and put l/over that new focal length. For instance, for a 300mm focal length, multiply 300 X 1.6 crop factor = 480. Your minimum hand held shutter speed should be at least 1/480 second.

For a 4/3rds size sensor such as on some of the Olympus, Sony, Panasonic, etc., the crop factor is 2. With a 300 mm lens multiply 300 X 2 = 600. Put 1/600 and your minimum hand held shutter speed should be at least 1/600 second.

I've had the 18-400mm Tamron lens for about 4 years on a Canon 7D Mark ii. I use it about 95% of the time. It is sharp enough to use for photo competitions and win awards. I had been using 18-135mm and a 70-300mm lens. I was loosing shots when traveling to Australia, New Zealand, and Canada because 135mm was too short and then 70mm was not wide enough! I was loosing time and missing shots because I was changing lenses so often. Now, I get most everything with just my Tamron lens.

Our trip to the Yukon and Alaska so much more enjoyable with that Tamron lens!

For more specialized shooting I use a 10-22mm Canon lens and a Canon 100mm macro lens.

You need the reach of your crop factor APS-C 7DMKii for wildlife photography. You will loose that if you follow the suggestions to go full frame. I also have the Canon 7D MKii and I am happy to wait for Cannon's APS-C mirrorless that will be out later this year.

Otherwise, for reach many professionals are going to Micro 4/3rds which gives you a 2 times crop factor over full frame.

DO NOT GO TO FULL FRAME!

I was referring to Gene1's comments of how to be steady and his pictures of only 1/25 second. I used to be able to do that, too. I love IS/VR and IBIS. I also move up my ISO and or shutter speed and things work out fine. Burkphoto, I feel the way you do. It is a matter of compensating for recently induced motion blur. But holding one's breath, etc sure does not work any more like it used to.

Good technique is required to reliably eliminate camera shake. But so can image stabilization. all images below were made with lens optical stabilization turned on.

These first two images were taken hand held at 1/25 sec. The waterfall was @150mm, the cat was zoomed to 600mm. The last was at 1/10 sec, 18mm with a cropped sensor camera.

The usual guidance is to use the reciprocal of the effective focal length as the shutter speed - so a 150mm on FX camera would be 1/150 sec or shorter. At 600mm it would be 1/600 sec or shorter. ON the crop camera the effective focal length of an 18mm lens is 27mm, so the guidance calls for a shutter speed of 1/27 or shorter.

But as you can see, that is just guidance - it is possible to shoot at speeds far slower than the guidance if you keep calm, breathe normally, press the shutter gently at the end of an exhale, and stay away from coffee, tea, energy drinks, amphetamines, etc.

When you get the shakes in your 60's or 70's or 80's or 90's your techniques listed above do not work at all! You will find out soon enough! We all could shoot at slower shutter speeds in our younger years. Older photographers do not find your bragging about slower shutter speeds helpful but insulting!

As I was taught, by the Photographic Society of America, you emphasize the good points first and tell them why, where and how their image is good. Then, tell them your opinion as to what adjustments could be considered to improve the image with constructive comments why and how. It is important to use phrases such as: " In my opinion", "To my eye", etc. so that they know that is your personal opinion.
