Thanks for the suggestion. I used a notepad as an intermediary to transfer files from my sd card to a flash drive on my last trip. Just trying to eliminate as much stuff and weight as possible.

Thanks, that's what I did on my last trip, an 11 day cruise to Alaska. I used a different sd card each day and then worried about losing one.

Thanks, looks interesting but sometimes need something a little larger for long trips. I appreciate the suggestion.

I’m looking for a way to back up my photos when on a long, extended trip that doesn’t require a computer. I’m old and trying to lighten the load. Does anyone know of a portable SSD device that has a slot for an SD card and internal power? I searched B&H and couldn’t find anything. Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

It was definitely in the wilderness but that's all I know about it.

Good question and how do they get to it?

In April of this year I asked for suggestions for picture ops while sailing the inland waterway of Alaska. Dennis2146 gave me an excellent suggestion about looking for houses in remote areas while actually cruising. Here's a range of what I saw thanks to his suggestion. All were taken while on board with a Sony RX10 m4. Thanks Dennis for the help.

What is wrong?

If your fantastic super duper digital camera and hyper sharp lenses are so awesome why does everyone need AI sharpening and all these other dozens of programs to fix the utter failures of their equipment performance?

SOOC should be just fine from your $6K cameras and $12,000K lenses.
But apparently they are hardly sharp at all and desperately need lots of help.
Or is it such poor technique with all this super equipment that the photos need salvaging?

A friend wants to know.
What is wrong? br br If your fantastic super dupe... (show quote)

Sound like you never did any darkroom work with printing from film. Read a book about all that Ansel Adams did in the darkroom.

What lenses or lens should I take, I have a nikon 70-300 Afs Vr., a 60mm 2.8 macro, a nikon 20mm af 2.8, a nikon 24-85 afs, a135mm 3.5 nikon and a 28 2.8 promaster manual lens. What do you guys think. Thanks Jim Bianco

I was on an 11 day cruise of the inland waterway of Alaska at the end of May. I had my choice of a Nikon D500 with lenses ranging from 35mm to 600mm. I have a travel tripod, a carbon fiber tripod, a heavy duty monopod and a cheap monopod. I also have a Sony RX10m4. I chose to take the Sony and the cheap monopod. The Sony has a good lens, zooms out to 600mm and allowed me to easily change shutter speeds up to at least 10 frames per second
which I did for shooting whales and eagles and is easy to setup and shoot in a crowds. It is light weight and water resistant. I used the monopod mainly as a walking stick. The Sony setup was much lighter and easier to transport while on the cruise and also on the plane traveling back and forth. I am very satisfied with the resulting pictures.

Since we both have acquired significant ages and experience I thought I would mention three books that I enjoyed reading in my younger days that helped me in many ways including with composition. Here they are: The Complete Kodak Book of Photography, A Time/Life Book published around 1982 or 1983; Digital Photography Master Class by Tom Ang, published around 2008; Learning to See Creatively by Bryan Peterson, published in 2003. In my younger days I read anything that Bryan Peterson wrote. The Ang book includes some interesting field assignments. The Kodak book is technically out dated but the photo how to's and ideas are timeless. You may have to do some searching to find these. They are the "gems" that helped me shoot better in this great hobby.

bamfordr - Thanks for the comments. We had already been advised to "layer." I hadn't thought about gloves so will add my driving gloves to the packing list. The small ship we will be on welcomes early morning risers so I plan to take advantage of that also. I am not taking my "big rig kit" because I want to travel lighter. That's what you do when traveling long distances involving planes and boats and age is catching up with you.

Thanks for the comments. I'm thinking of signing up for an excursion in a small boat that will refund $100 of the fee if we don't see whales. I will also be carrying small Nikon 8x25 binoculars to help with wildlife spotting.

I will be cruising the Alaska inland waterway from Vancouver to Juneau and back in late May - 11 day trip. Major stops will be in Ketchikan, Wrangell, Juneau, Icy Straights and Prince Rupert. The ship is a small one so that we can get into some of the fjords and inlets that large cruise ships can't navigate. I will be taking my bridge camera only - a Sony RX10 iv. What suggestions do you have for sightseeing and photo ops that aren't strenuous? I am over 80 and have old man knees. Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.
