Several years ago, when I first rekindled my interest in photography, a bought a Pro Master SP532C carbon fiber tripod brand new for $400. At the time I didn’t know I would ultimately get caught up in the hobby and have used this tripod first with a D5100, then a D750 and now a D850. It does everything I need a tripod to do without spending big bucks. I have mounted the 850 with a 150-600 lens and had very good success with that heavy combo. The machined ball head is smooth and locks tight. I’m an amateur and have no delusions of ever being more than that and see no need to spend much more only to have the same results. I will say that some other ProMaster products I’ve tried have been a bit of a disappointment but not this tripod. Others will disagree but I’m pleased with the tripod.

The necessary quality of the tripod and head is a function of camera+lens weight, maximum lens focal length, and the environment in which the photographs will be taken (ground vibration, sustained wind, wind gusts). Wind can cause vibrations, especially on long lenses.) The length of the tripod legs is important and depends, not only on the photographer's height, but also on the area in which photography will take place (if you will be photographing on steep slopes, you want longer legs that can be extended on the down-hill side. Center column extensions are problematic except in vibration-free circumstances.
