Absolutely stunning. Not sure the Hubble could do any better.

I have done it many times, I shoot HDR.

I wouldn’t think HDR would be possible with a guy running as fast as he can straight towards me? I was thinking that’s 3 photos or more to get an HDR photo?

I would be very interested to see one of the unedited images to see exactly the situation you were up against.

You have two separate problems here, flare from the sun/light in front of your camera and a heavily backlit subject.

If your positioning is restricted behind the finish line to get the light source more out of frame are you able to consider getting up higher and shooting down? The problem with finish lines is that the runners can come on the left, mid or right side and one shooting position is never ideal. There's always someone else where you need to get and if you do get where you want along comes a camera phone on legs !

Having shot thousands of runners often in harsh sun and shooting into the light I don't recall ever having a problem with glare affecting the runner. A good lens hood and high quality filter (if any) will help and they also say you can add additional shielding from the light with your hand but I have never done that.

As for the backlit subjects I recently trialed the use of TTL fill flash in HSS during a marathon where many shots were into the bright light and with dark skinned subjects you get problems. With mirrorless this is a doddle being able to quickly adjust for ambient light using the histogram and the flash looking after the subject reasonably well.

Thank you and everyone here for all the advice. It’s much appreciated. I will look and see if I still have the RAW files in my LR when I get to my computer. If I do I will post a few here.

I’m not sure if I’d be close enough as I’m several feet from the line they cross to stay out of the way and not get ran over. But it’s an idea I can experiment with for sure. Thank you.

Your doing finish line photos for a 5k race, it’s 9am and your setup behind the finish line and the sun is just up, nice and bright and facing you. How would you set up to shoot each runner? You can’t change positions.

This just happened to me and I wasn’t to happy. Had to heavily dehaze each photo then remove the noise this created. Feel like the photos were not sharp after all the editing.

My settings were pretty consistent at 1/1000 F/4 iSO 100.

Gear was an R6 and my 24-105 f/4 L with a hood.

Any advice would be most helpful for the next time I’m in this position. Thanks guys!

In reality if I sold an IPhone photo for $1 I’m now a professional.

I traded my 5D4 for the R6 mainly for the better tracking system as I do tons of running photos. I can’t tell Any difference in image quality and some photos are heavily cropped before delivery. I loved my 5D4 but the R6 has been a game changer for doing sports/running.

I think LR has come a long way in their masking. But I still fall back to PS.

I need to really set down and lean more about PS.

LR does a great job grabbing the subject.

After reading through all this helpful info I decided to go ahead and get my EIN since the W9 seems to be a common request. I’m getting more request to do paid work and want to remain completely legal. I know I won’t have to pay taxes on these small amounts once you count monthly expenses and travel. I pay $23 each month for my web site and Lightroom subscription. If the IRS wants to talk about $50 then I want to talk about the 8k in equipment I bough this year.

I'm a runner and photographer too. How are you getting these gigs. I would love to get similar jobs.

For me I knew a lot of the local people from running races, I had to stop for 2 years and wanted to stay involved so I saw a few local races and ask if they would like photos. I was never fully happy with my finish line photos using my Canon 5D 4 so when the Canon R6 came out I jumped on it and my photos improved dramatically, it seems like I just can’t miss focus with this rig.

The few companies that time races started reposting my work to their page and soon race directors from all over was looking for help with their race. All races are to raise funds for a Non Profit group so there really isn’t a lot of money to be made here.

My biggest race that I was invited to was in July, it was for the men’s 8k USA Track & Field National Championship sponsored by Toyota. I got one of two finish line positions. That race blew my web site up, over 600,000 photo views in just a few days.

I love the challenge of people running as fast as they can straight at me and nailing a finish line photo for them.

News flash. You are “liable” for taxes on this income whether you get a 1099 or not.

There are so many misleading or downright false info in the answers posted that I will try to address them individually.

That I do understand and the last group I ever want to be at odds with is the IRS. I’m considering going forward with getting my TIN or EIN and state DBA and make everything completely legal mainly because I have been ask to quote a few weddings and larger events. These won’t be $50 events.

If you really want to shoot the photos, do it for free.
Not worth $50 imo

It’s an hour drive each way and I will miss a few hours away from my paying job. Wasn’t actually trying to make a dollar, just didn’t want to loose money. I may still shoot it or if my running continues to improve I may go run the race.

Yes, you do. Still have to file with the IRS. Still have to file 1099s. I did non-profit accounting for years.

Good to know, thank you.

If they demand a w9, you could potentially be liable for taxes on this income. My son is a professional musician and has often played gigs requiring a w9, and as a result he almost always has had to declare these gigs as income. Depending on you normal income bracket that could be a healthy chunk of your $50. They don't need to report anything under $600, but they can. Over the years my son has had to pay taxes on amounts that were under the minimum reporting amount because the venue reported it anyway. I would say thanks, but no thanks unless they give you more money.

Thank you and the person below for this info. I’m not doing enough yet to have to mess with taxes and will pass on this. What I guess surprised me with this request is all the groups putting on fund raising events are non profit and tax exempt. I guess you still have to have a tax paperwork trail.
