There is so much wisdom and experience on this forum.

I'm searching for advice. I am interested in learning more about photographing fly fishing rods (a new line my son is instrumental in launching) to assist him for display on the website.

I have a Nikon D610, the Nikor 105mm (which I think would be helpful) as well as the Nikor 28-70mm (also good?) and a decent tripod.

Is there a particular forum here that is most appropriate to ask specific advice on how to set up shots?

Also, can anyone recommend a workshop/class that would be of high quality to learn more about this type of photography. Or perhaps an on-line workshop resource. I don't have an ancillary flash, simply the pop-up on the D610 but I would certainly be willing to purchase some equipment and/or pay for some guidance.

I will also be researching on my own.

(don't be snarky)

If you can't travel with just 1 body and 1 lens, two lenses max, with the strap always wrapped securely around your wrist, look at any of the pocket-sized models. They have the same cropped sensors as the DSLRs, capture in RAW, and capture wonderful images. I have my Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II set to capture both JPEG and RAW so I can share images 'from the road' via the JPEGs and my phone, if desired. All the RAW files edit as normal in LR when I get home. The G9X is the size of a deck of cards. Sony and Nikon have similar models. All the brands have several mix-n-match versions of lens focal length and moveable view screen, at different price points, so there should be one that fits exactly the mix you want.

I’m a nurse and a part time landscape photographer. Recently, as I was reorganizing my locker, my director noticed some of my printed images that had fallen to the floor as I was cleaning. She asked to see them and subsequently showed them to upper management. They, in turn, asked if I could provide them with a few large prints for the admin. lounge. I did. Fortunately, they turned out to be quite nice looking. Then they asked for a portfolio of my best images, which I provided. I edited them in LR and PS and printed all of them at 8.5 X 11in on my Canon Pro-300. I now have to meet with them on March 1, 2022, this coming Tuesday for a walk through the commons areas of the hospital. I’m kind of excited about the whole thing; not for financial gain, but for the exposure. My wife, on the other hand, feels like I need to get paid. Of course I agree that with all the effort and expenditures, I need some sort of compensation. I’m just not sure how to approach them with regard to money. I’ve considered buying the Canon Pro- 4000 to be able to do all of the printing myself. How should I approach them regarding money. I’d like to be able to reimburse myself for the printer.
Thanks,
J

Have you considered giving them a package price? For example, you will provide a minimum of "x" number of images (20?) for the price of "x" ($500?) For an additional fee, you could have the images enlarged/fine-tuned/mounted and the fee might be the actual cost for doing so, plus an additional "x" for your time: ($200?)

I think I like this advice. I do like my 7500 and it makes beautiful, big prints. Maybe a refurbished on the 28-70 and use the 80-200 until the next time it needs to go to the shop.
Thanks all.

As an older, disabled, hobbyist, I have become increasing interested in getting a high quality, pocket sized camera, but due to my fixed income and rather low hobby budget, I have not yet made a decision and plunked down the cash. I have been saving for quite some time for this type of purchase, but really need to get the most out of it as it may well be the camera I finish out my photographic endeavors with along side my Pentax K3. Anyway, I have done a lot of online research and it's obvious that what I really want is the Sony RX100 MK-VII, but the sticker shock is painful to say the least! Even good used models are near $1000.00 and that's if you can even find one. I might be able to settle for the RX100 VR, but it too is still pricey for me and even harder to find used or refurbished. So, I am now leaning toward a Canon G5X MK-II or possibly even a G7X MK-III. I'd rather have the G5X primarily due to the pop up viewfinder, but these still go for around $900.00 new and I have yet to find a used one up for sale. The G7X doesn't have a viewfinder, but I can find them for sale used at a reasonable price (around $450.00) However, the auto focus on both Canon models is not their current phase detect system and I've read some reviews that mentioned focus issues with the G7X. This brings me right back to the Sony Models that clearly have the superior focus systems, I just can't seem to spend that kind of money on one, at least not yet. Frankly, I'd really like to keep my budget under $700.00 and I'm not against buying refurbished or used if the unit is in great shape and it saves me some money. Therefore, I have also recently reviewed some of the Panasonic and Fuji models and they seem to have a lot of bang for the bucks, with some Panasonic models being well within my price range. However, the reviews aren't all that great and I keep thinking that the Sony is the one I really want. So, unless the group here can show me a really good option within my current price range, I guess I'm going to have to keep saving or sell something and even then it's going to be very hard for me to plunk down the cash needed for the Sony RX100 either new or used (I bought my last 3 DLSR's for less than that combined). Anyone got any good suggestions on alternatives? I'd especially like to hear about experiences with the Panasonic models from folks that have actually used them. Thanks for any input here and good luck and good shooting to all.

Have you considered this camera? Bought it for my husband. It ticks many of the boxes. Also, the price works.

I just had an interesting and frustrating exchange with Nikon. I asked them to reparse my D7200, actually applied with serial number. They gave me permission to return it. When the received it, they told me it was grey market but if I would send them proof of purchase in the US, they could repair it. I sent them POP from Abes of Maine (don't say it). Then they told me they were returning it unfixed because they could not tell which country it was intended for and that cameras were constructed differently for different countries.
All this leads me to the often asked and answered question, who does repair grey market Nikons? Of course, I never kept a record of previous answers.
I will appreciate any help.

I think it would be appropriate to back to Nikon and go up a couple layers in management until you find someone willing to take responsibility and stand behind the Nikon name. Their response is not acceptable.

Use all your negotiating skills. You have a case.

Don’t give up, keep going!

Is anyone here a member? Is their insurance worthwhile? If not a member of this organization, what other insurance companies are a good alternative?

I'm not a "professional" however, I have some very expensive gear and I'm looking to insure it especially since I'm going on a trip soon. Also, since crime is at an all time high, I would like to be able to replace my gear if something untoward happens.

Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

I have a separate rider on my New York Central Mutual homeowner’s policy. I have about $3,500 of equipment listed for about $44/yr.

No deductible. Reimbursement for value listed on rider. Covers damage, loss, accidental misplacement.

Primes

Please excuse me for my recent ramblings. It’s just that I’m enduring a temporary health issue that has me bedridden. I suppose it’s the extra time on my hands, and just trying to occupy it in any way possible. I assure you that I’ll lay low and try not to become a nuisance to the groups. And to make matters worse, I can’t grab the new D780 and make some snaps. 😢

Anyways, back to the intended subject. Does anyone miss shooting with the older, smaller, compact primes? I have and use the Tamron SP 20-40, Nikon 24-120 f/4 VR and the Nikon 70-200 f/4 VR glass, and I really like them. But have you noticed that today’s modern primes are as large and heavy as zooms? Being a prolific street shooter, I find it so liberating when I just screw on a small prime and blast away. I find it more liberating, and conducive to creative image making.

I like carrying around a heavier lens. It makes me feel like a photographer.

There is no right or wrong approach. We should all do what works for us individually. Just my take on photography. 🤔

Definitely look into Oceania cruise line. I speak from experience that the ships are smaller (1,250) passengers, usually no kids, no dining rules, all restaurants included, no bad art auctions or photographers hounding you, the BEST cuisine, almost all-inclusive but not so inclusive you are paying for stuff you don’t need (beverage packages, ship-sponsored shore excursions). Also, extremely high standards for health and safety surrounding germs and food handling. Heads above Holland America, in my humble opinion.
