If you shoot raw make sure it has 12 gig of ram at least. Lenovo is what I have at home and work for a pc and my personal laptop. All three have been solid for about 4 years so far. My pc at home has 8 gig of ram and is fine with my D7000 raw files, but doesn't like the D800 raw files. It tends to lag a bit.

I shoot in RAW+JPEG mode so thanks for the tip on the D800 raw files. I have a D700 so am assuming lag time would be similar?

I would want to more about exactly which AMD CPU it is. Some of the new gen AMDs are quite fast and very cost effective, while other versions are not in the league with Intel I5/I7/I9 CPUs. I’d also want details on how far the memory can be expanded, if there are any open PCI expansion slots available, open drive bays for additional drives, details on the monitor, is the Radeon graphics integrated on the CPU or a seperate card and the power supply rating. I’d want to know those specifics on any system I purchased.

Are you comfortable assembling the system yourself? With reasonable skill, you can do this in an afternoon. Your budget might look something like this:

Motherboard $100-$125
CPU $250
Memory $135
Case plus PS plus CPU cooler $125
Graphics Card. $100-125
BluRay/ MDisc Drive $50
Win 10 64b OEM license. $100
Keyboard and mouse $40
Monitor $200

Not much over your 1K budget. Now before anyone takes me to task over the prices, they’re just estimates, and of course, you’ll need to shop for sales/deals. Just some thoughts...

It's the AMD Dual-Core A9-9420 APU (3 GHz base frequency, up to 3.6 GHz burst frequency, 1 MB cache). It also looks like the memory is expandable up to 16GB. I'm not much of a "build your own PC" kind of a person. Give me a floor to install and I'm all over that

I like the plug and play route, and hoping there is something out there that would fit the bill. I did see a refurbished iMac for $929 from the Apple site, but it's only the 21.5" monitor.

at double the price at $1299:

Nice set up!

Wish I could say the same about money not being an issue because I would probably look to do the same in having one built up. My budget stops just north of $1000 though, which is limiting what I am looking to buy. I know that removes the iMac route, but am hoping I will find that unicorn deal and spend a little more

I also have found the 27-inch iMac the best I've ever had, and I've been using desktops from 1985.

I never had an iMac and have been a Windows guy pretty much my entire life. My brother just invested in a new iMac and the colors are so sharp and everything looks amazing. It could just be that I wanted to see it as so much better than what I have. I do know that the price tag is much, much higher on the Apple line than in the HP world

If you like the HP install a 500gb Samsung SSD. The difference will amaze you and you can do it for under $200.00.

Didn't even know that would be such an inexpensive option. I do like my Envy from the portability perspective and it's light.

Thanks for all of the quick responses out there. This will probably be an internal debate in my mind for a few weeks more at least so I don't have that ugly buyer's remorse.

I have an older HP Envy, which I purchased about 5 years back. Over time, it has served me well, but has been running like a pig and the fan seems to be doing some overtime especially when reviewing photos. I use Lightroom and feel like the action is always 1 or 2 clicks behind. I am looking at investing a new PC and wanted to get some recommendations out there from folks who absolutely love what they have.

The internal debate I have been having is pretty standard...laptop vs. desktop, PC vs. Mac, cost vs. not caring, etc. Anyway, I have been gravitating towards the all in ones I have seen out there based on price and for the ability to double as a TV in my office. However, I have a 24" monitor that I use for work that I also connect my personal lap to when I am viewing/editing pictures. Obviously the portability comes into play for the laptop, but I have my iPad if I really needed something portable with me.

What are those ‘things’ on the hoofs in the last photo?

Thanks, Duane. Not sure what the technical name is for them, but it was snowy and icy out, so these little boots made it easier for the horse to navigate through the weather.

I recently purchased a Nikon 70-300mm VR lens (the one with the 67mm filter ring) and had a chance to take it out and use it at my daughter's riding lesson this past weekend. I haven't done any post processing on the photos yet and not sure I will spend the time on these. Overall, I was super happy with the lens and I was able to be far enough away to not disturb the lesson or her working with the horse. Lots of chickens up there on the farm as well.

Using PayPal is the best way to go, especially if you can create an invoice with the information. I've found it best to PM the person interested in your gear and exchange phone numbers and have a good ol' fashioned phone call with your potential buyer.

SS

So true SS....stop researching and just get out there, right? :)

Thanks for the all the recommendations out there folks. Like anything else there is a sea of possibilities. I'm not sure my "all in one" solution is out there unless I invested in a larger backpack, but then it would defeat my minimalist approach. I guess my best option is still my good ol' LowePro Sling bag, although the 250 AW is slightly larger which may give me that extra room that I need.

Thanks again everyone for your comments. I appreciate the recommendations and suggestions.

I currently have a North Face Surge backpack and absolutely love it since it has a ton of storage space and is comfortable to haul around my stuff. I typically take this as my only bag while doing short weekend trips and am able to fit everything I need in the backpack. The problem I face is that I either have to haul my LowePro Sling bag with me or I have to just carry the camera with my quick strap. I recently did a Google search for "backpack inserts for photography" and of course am getting more sites that pop up, which will take tons of time to research. I figured while I am doing some independent research, I wanted to get some feedback from folks on here to see if anyone has done a DIY conversion of a regular backpack for camera gear. I'd be carrying my D700 with battery grip attached with a 24-85 lens mounted on it, plus a Nikon 50mm, plus a Nikon 70-300 lens. My LowePro sling is an older version so it's playing Tetris often times to get the right configuration for the camera + 3 lenses. My goal is to use my backpack to serve as my primary bag because I can also bring my computer with me while out and about. I would either have to reduce the amount of clothing if I still wanted the "one bag" solution or just bring a small duffel bag for clothing. It would be nice to go out for day of shooting and then connecting to the computer at a coffee shop somewhere to go through the pictures and do some light editing.

I did find this one on B&H that is on my short list at the moment:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1014073-REG/pro_tec_i501_camera_insert_bag.html

Also this one, but it's sold out:
https://www.fjallraven.us/products/knken-photo-insert

Anyway, just looking to see if anyone has used this approach and has a product that they are super happy with and would recommend. Thanks!

You are not the first to bring this issue to the forum. Yes, there are bullies. But there are less of them than those who are respectful and courteous. Stay with this forum, and don't be bullied out of it. I've learned much on this forum as an amateur/hobbyist.

I agree. Bullies are everywhere out there now that the majority of information is out there online. I tell my daughters constantly that you cannot control other people, but you can control how you react to them. UHH is a GREAT site filled with many people who are willing to help provide valuable feedback and honest criticism. There are those who will hide behind the keys of their computer and write their poisonous words in a forum where they can, for the most part, remain anonymous. Enjoy the good parts of UHH and ignore the dark corners. At the end of the day, every forum, online outlet, and social media site will have your bullies, who are merely cowards with nothing better to do than to chop away at others.
