My recipe is:
a) use a very long lens (I use a 400mm mirror lens)
b) compose with an interesting foreground
c) Take, at least, two shots: one where the moon is well exposed and another where the foreground is well exposed
d) Combine both shots on post.

Just see this example:

The moon seems quite overexposed.....

You will get much better results with a scanner. You really need to check them out, makes it quicker, much easier and better.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

quicker and easier, yes...if software that works with your O/S is available. But a high mp camera will produce a higher resolution image than most slide scanners.

Nikon D850 and D740 both have the capability to convert slides to JPEG Fine format in camera. I've converted all my old 1970s and 80s slides. Then, use modern software to enhance them. It does require a special slide adapter attachment and a Nikon macro lens but works well.

Brings back lots of memories.

Why jpeg? Shoot raw and post process.

I have an R6, and yes a 5Ds and a 7DmkII.

Great. R5, 5D IV and 7D II here. Scads of EF lenses, Canon, Tamron, Sigma
Rokinon; and 2 RF for now, the 24-105 f/4 and 70200 2.8

Get a 2x III. They can be found used for well under $300. Or a II as I don't recall whether the III performance is better on older glass than the II.

That venerable 400 is a Canon "Big White" that I've never owned. But it's a great lens, as you know.

I often use my two Canon Extender III's on any of my tele lenses. The IQ and sharpness never disappoints.

OP, you didn't mention if you have a mirrorless body as well?

Thank you for commenting. I was hoping that I could tweak some of the many jpeg settings in the camera so that I could achieve what I’m looking for. But, even if it came close and I still needed to make adjustments I’d be better off shooting in RAW, where I have the greatest control over the image dynamics.

As the above poster stated, use your built in HDR. If you don't like the result, process the best raw file.

And shoot raw.

Thanks, Joe. I don't post often here, but I should.....That shoot was one of many that I have nailed the location and timing perfectly, thanks to photoephemeris and photopills

Sounds like you have hooked up with someone who has a very high opinion of themselves - when I studied with Ansel Adams one was enough - lenses are interchangeable, and trying to shoot two cameras at once is tough

Depends on what you're doing. I shoot timelapses, often with two cameras going at once, but with different lenses.... and have done it with three cameras, two for timelapses, one for perfectly timed stills. This image is from a moonrise behind Rainier. This shot is from one of three timelapses, but I knew I would have to reframe a couple times as the action progressed, as I was purposefully zoomed way in, for detail on Tahoma and a big moon. This is a low rez copy....

I have a similar lens, the Tamron 150-600 G2, which also has the built in Arca Swiss mount I am usually able to get it to balance on my gimbal head without using the long lens plate which I have mounted on my EF 500 Big White. Even if I've added an extender, but that plate is a must on the big 500.

For balancing the lens/camera combo, especially with a gimbal head. To balance my 150-600 with D750 attached, the lens foot is not all the way through the clamp, so I use a longer lens plate.

Correct. Further, adding an extender gives more reason for having that long lens plate.

LOL. That's great.... But she's not giving that tree a proper hug. Trees need lovin' too, ya see!!

I'm an arborist.... and have cut down thousands of trees, many of which deserved to stay, but for whatever reason, were cut.
So, I have feelings both ways. And have hugged many a tree... and once been part of a crew of 20 top arb's from across the great US of Eh, that pruned the largest tree that has ever received a thorough pruning. We donated our services, but, had we been being paid, the bill may well could have stretched to 6 figures.... no decimal point.

Your statement was merely “no one wants raw files”. I didn’t see an explanation of why that is so. Only a list of some services that don’t want them.

Which didn't lead you to get my drift?

As hard as one tries, there's no explaining facts to blockheads. Thanks for trying. Best of luck.

I do hope you weren't implying that I am a blockhead... because you would then have stepped in something unpalatable

No one wants raw files because they are not FINISHED images. There is more information in the raw data than in a jpeg. Many different jpeg images can be produced from a given raw file.

It’s the choice of processing parameters that makes the finished image.

What's your point? I was responding to someone and explaining why no service accepts raw files. I'm very well aware of what a raw file is.
