Not everyone’s cup of tea and your photo was great. I just can’t stop messing around with pictures in the backseat of the eye my car using Snapseed. Stay safe.

Thank you sscomp. I haven't yet tried Snapseed.

It would be interesting to see what those with mobile phone apps do with this photo which was taken with i-phone 12 PRO MAX. It appears that they are rather shy.

Good luck in the contest I agree straightening the horizon was the most critical. First thing Judges will throw a photo out for. The rest is different for every Judges pet peave. This is a great shot.

Thank you, but there is room for improvement.

You are quite right about some Judges.

My thought about AI is that photos which are AI'd should be in their own category or disqualified.

That is the thought so far in the UK. I wonder what the younger generation will think of that. On the other hand they don't join camera clubs as they don't want to mix with us old foggies.

Just a thought—you need to learn to edit your own photos if you are going to enter competitions. Judges also frown on all the work not being done by the photographer. Lightroom is pretty easy to learn, just beginning with the basic adjustments and learning more and more nuances a ps you go.

Hi Jay

I know my way around Lightroom.

I will not use the version from here. I just wanted to see what could be done which would be the same as watching a Youtube video.

On the other hand what about A1 doing it for us? Now that is a different story altogether.

Thank you, Billy, but a Judge would still say that the highlights on the left rail under the rope need darkening slightly.

There is still no detail on the top of the black post.

I know that I am asking a lot but my post-processing skills are not advanced.

This is a photo taken on my holiday to Barbados at Christmas. The place of my birth and at 75 I knew that it would be the last time and it was. Unfortunately, the old buildings and the roads are in disrepair and it is a bit "tatty" and global warming has taken its toll on the shoreline. Where I played as a child it is hardly a beach now.

On my return to the club which I only joined in September and hadn't shown any photos and with the Chairman hinting that the new members should show their photos (you get the message) so on the "show and tell" night I showed about 8 photos demonstrating the effects of global warming. I did not crop or do anything to them and I told them that it was best to leave them as they were instead of doing them badly. I did not show this photo as it does not depict global warming.

On a group workshop recently with a Guide, the topic was ICM and Rose the Guide that she wasn't going to show us how to use our cameras. Pauline said "Heather is the least experienced here". I could have died. She went on to say that she is very experienced, I didn't let it worry me but as a grownup I knew that it was what my husband would have said "tactless". I went on to tell her that I did not process the photos, but she wasn't interested in what I had to say so I shut up.

Pauline has not seen any of my photos before so made her opinion on the holiday snaps I showed that evening. Of course, I am not experienced, but at the same time I would not tell her that she should let another member operate the Zoom equipment at the club meetings as she spends too much time fiddling about while we sat there thinking how useless she is. Now that is not a kind thought on my part and neither was it a kind thing for her to have said.

It is for that reason that I want to process this photo to the best of my ability, as I am going to enter it in one of the club's competitions next year.

Perhaps now that everyone knows my story it may encourage others to have pity on me and show what they can do to enhance the photo further.

I just let it wash over my head and ignore such comments.

Actually I was only really using the Photoshop part of Adobe as I did not like the directory requirements of Lightroom at the time I initially subscribed. I really like ACR in photoshop as I shoot in RAW anyway but in retrospect my self-filing methods have become a disaster. The AI and presets in ON1 are pretty interesting and I am sure the newest versions of Photoshop/lightroom are as well... I will get the new ON1 book and see what I can learn in a year... ON1 has come a long way.

Surely there are tutorials on the ON1 site and webinars. I haven't got around to those yet.

Hi Heather.... Your post got me thinking and I had to research exactly WHAT I purchased... I had ON1 previously and I got an offer to UPGRADE to Photo Raw 2024 for 69.00 US. Evidently I will have to pay every time there is an upgrade after my first year... I interpret this as I own this edition. I was currently paying monthly for Photoshop which I cancelled and am Very satisfied with ON1 at the present time, although I am going to buy a book for 2024 to help in the learning process. I did not do the subscription. I hope this info helps you... Bob

Thanks, Bob. Yes, you should be OK, but certainly, you shouldn't have to upgrade every time they issue an upgrade.

Since mentioning it on here I have sent a request to convert what I have paid into a Licence and I will pay the difference.

Like you, I own Lightroom 5 and was looking for a program that is as easy as Lightroom and came across ON1. I haven't used it yet.

I will report back with their response.

What you do need here is a level horizon; straightening would do wonders for the photo.

Other than that, you have a pretty nice shot there, and I really don't see the need for the changes you suggest.

Hi Jay

Ah yes, I wouldn't argue with you, but I forgot to say that I intend to enter it into my club's competition next year and as you know, Judges are very critical and the suggestions I have made are what the Judge will pick up on.

The present version as it is will be going into a B&W Group Exhibition in April.

This photo was taken with an i-phone 12 PRO MAX and was processed by my friend using the latest Lightroom Classic on his computer. I only have Lightroom 5.

(1) I would like the highlights of the post on the left to darkened.

(2) The post on the right is very dark and I would like the shadows to be lightened.

(3) I would like the patterned of the floor of the walkway be cloned onto the post.

Unfortunately, my skills are not sufficient to perform those tasks to a high standard and would like some help. Please free to use the photo and show me your results and let me know which programs were used and how they were done.

I look forward to seeing the different versions.

The photo was printed in an A3 print and it is as good as any print using a camera.

I have now this week purchased a Samsung S24 Ultra as I have seen the photos taken with that camera. I am not saying that the camera is perfect, but with the best processing possible, it is surprising what can be achieved with the mobile phone which I am finding that I use a lot more for photography as it is always with me and there is no weight and can be carried around more easily. At the age of 76 soon, I am loving the new technology and don'gt intend to be left behind.

Much obliged.

Heather

All I can say at this point is that learning how easy it was to get the Phonecam images into my computer and downloading the latest ON1 software kind of happened simultaneously. I got a new machine and figured I would start from scratch and stop paying monthly and give ON1 a chance. Once you get that phone file into your computer the world is your oyster... Just use any editing app you are familiar with... Adaptive AI can give you a lot of different looks also. I really see no end to what can be done and what software will be able to do in the future.

Did you purchase the ON1 Licence instead of the subscription?

I too got ON1 when it was offered as a "free be on17 Jan this year" only to find that it only lasted for a year and has to be renewed next year when I have to pay for it.

I have now purchased the Photo RAW 2024 Upgrade for £48.01 (UK) and realise that it is only for a year. It doesn't state that on the receipt. I only found that out when I went into my account and saw it listed there for one year.

I have not had the time to activate either programs and will be writing to ON1 for a Licence as I don't want to be purchasing an update every year. I have worked out that the freebee would have cost me £57.24 as that is what is on the receipt, so if three different updates a year I will be paying £252.00 which I cannot afford. It is my hobby and I wouldn't be using that often to warrant paying out that sum of money.

I would like to hear which version you have please.

I too have discovered mobile phone photography and will be posting a photo to be processed further.

Regards,

Heather

A little tweaking in Photoshop CS6.
My wife was needing a new phone earlier this year, after looking a bit, this is what she got (the Samsung 23). Really like the photos it takes!

Thank you Doug for taking the time to process my photo. That is much better. You have toned down the highlights on the left rail and have lightened the shadows on the right post.

It would be good if someone could show me how to clone the floor of the walkway on to the post so that the post have more detail. Nevertheless, I am grateful to you, Doug.

It just proves that mobile phones have increased tremendously and the quality has increased and will continue to do so as the younger generation will be using their phones instead of cameras.

After researching the phone, I found out that this phone had the best camera in the phone industry.
So I purchased it; the amount of noise at sunset is horrible.
It looks like a 480 image :(

I was thinking of not carrying all the heavy gear resulting from regular professional cameras.

It's not worth it, maybe just during the daylight.
Any other opinions?

It would help if you went on a Mobile Phone Course to find out how to use the phone properly. This photo was taken with an I-phone 12 PRO MAX. It was printed last week as an A3 photo for a Club's exhibition. This is before any processing has been done to it.

A member of the club agreed to print it for me and to put it in a frame. I watched while he used the present Lightroom as he has a subscription whereas I only have Lightroom5. I was more impressed with the result and if anyone is interested I can post the finished print.

Observations. You will note that the left plank on the walkway the wood is a bit bleached so it is blown out. The person who processed it didn't know how to tone down the highlights.

The post on the right is very dark and there is no detail in the post. My friend told me nothing could be done with it as it was a JPEG photo. I am sure that those among you would be able to clone the pattern from the floor onto the post. I know what should be done, but I don't know how to achieve it. Please then show it and say how it was achieved. I am hoping to enter the photo in my other club's competition, but I wouldn't until I can fix the imperfections to the best of my ability.

As a small photo, the bits of debris are not noticeable, but once it was printed as an A3 the debris was obvious and were removed.

I asked my friend Don whom I met on this site (I am UK) he is USA, to see what he could do, so his version is even better than my friend's. I am sure that he wouldn't mind showing his version.

I was so impressed with the i-photo that I enrolled on a mobile phone short course. One of the members had a Samsung 24 and I was impressed with her photos, so much so, that the i-phone 15 PRO MAX that I had purchased two weeks earlier is now replaced with a Samsung 24 ULTRA. The phone is not perfect but, it is nearly as good as some of today's popular cameras.

All in all, I am very pleased with my Samsung. I have found that I now take more photos as the phone is always with me and is no bother to carry around.

Comments and observations are accepted.

Also, please feel free to process the photo and see what you can do with a mobile phone photo.

Thanks.

Heather

Actually, Reuss, the song was connected with the annual sleigh races held at Medford, Massachusetts and was considered a sleighing song and was more associated with the Thanksgiving season. I think there must have been more snow around Thanksgiving now. I can remember that on most Thanksgivings in western Iowa where I am from the ground was covered with snow. There is the famous poem, Thanksgiving, by Lydia Maria Child that tells of the riding through the snow in a sleigh to grandfather's house pulled by a horse who knows the way. I agree that Jingle Bells is a fine song of the Christmas season and I enjoy it as such, but that is not how it started out. Merry Christmas back to you.

Quite true. Most songs that we today associated with Xmas were not originally Xmas songs.

Most were local folk songs but were adopted later as Xmas songs.

I don’t suppose we will ever get to the bottom of this, so to speak and so we are all right in one way or the other, but it doesn’t matter.

It was good clean conversation without a harsh word being spoken.

Happy Xmas to all.
