In my mind, the answer is easy. Go smart phone, IPhone and just get a model that offers good quality pictures. The only concern I can imagine is possible exposure to bad influences via the Internet. Otherwise, phone cameras have come into their own and offer really good quality especially if the goal is to share amongst friends and family. Later on she could "graduate" to a dedicated camera albeit DSLR, Mirrorless etc..

One more thought: does the school she goes to offer a photography course? Usually the class strongly suggests the type of camera that should be used to promote commonality in the class. That might be the best way to go if she has plans of taking a photography class in school, which I strongly recommend. All of my kids took a course in High School - that was back in the day and the camera of choice was the Pentax K1000. Dunno what High School classes are suggesting but all the classes my kids took back then strongly recommended the K1000 - that was back in the day. I have no specific recommendations for today.

Good luck, Al

I'm wondering how much people learn about photography, using a smartphone camera.

I would go a bit further on the age timeline and say almost all people are cellphone equipped at all times.

However, there are a few of us who don't use the camera that is in it. The more advanced in age, the less apt to use the camera in the phone; has been my observation. Of course, I know quite a few older people.

Agreed. Most kids don't yet have an ego big enough to be concerned about barrier-to-entry type expertise such as manual exposure mode, f/1.2 lenses and ISO-5000 performance. Capturing the image is the end, not the dynamic range of the sensor ...

Most kids seem to be very results oriented ~ hence, part of the popularity of cell-phone cameras in that age demographic.

I like to put a camera in a kid's hands and have them snap the shutter (on Automatic is just fine). Then I point out that (s)he just stopped time and recorded it. No-one in all of history has ever captured that exactly image, at exactly that moment, and no one ever will, again. Sometimes that registers with their young imaginations and egos.

I think something like the Sony A6000. She probably doesn't know but ask her which camera looks best to her then go from there.

Most post-modern 14-year-olds are so computer/cellphone savvy that they'll not be as intimidated by the Sony 6xxx-series, as many of us appear to be. And, they seem to really like the 11-frames/sec, or whatever the current claim is....

I have a friend with a 17-year-old son ~ bought a used a6000 w/the kit lenses ~ I loaned him a couple of Chinese primes ~ within a month, he was able to instruct me, and I've owned one for several years.

I have no reason to believe anything she says.

So, why should we accept wikipedia and Snopes as purveyors of the absolute "truth, and nothing but the truth"?

I don't know if this lady is "real", or not ~ or, whether her narratives and indictments are factual ~ but, if not, she deserves an Academy Award. I've been interviewing people (several a week), since May of 1970, and she's very convincing.

I currently own a Canon 5D MK III and a few L lenses, which I absolutely love. I wanted a decent mirrorless camera that I could easily carry everywhere I go, particularly on my weekly visits to see my grandkids. I have read the good and the bad about Sony and I finally decided to pull the trigger on my first mirrorless camera, the Sony a6100. I received my new camera two days ago and the one thing I’d like to say is, what the heck took me so long. I’m really having a blast with this little camera and learning the new menu has been a breeze. I am impressed with the IQ and all the features Sony packed in such a small body. I can’t wait to try the 4K video feature. After being a Canon shooter for many years, I’m happy with my Sony choice. I’ve also owned Yashica, Nikon and Canon film cameras. I gotta go, I need to shoot a few more pics.

Because the Sony a6000 series is so flexible and versatile, I have a feeling you'll be reaching for your a6100 more often than you might believe, at this point.

I've owned Canon, Minolta, Sony, and a couple of others and they've all been good. My Sony takes more abuse than probably anyone on here can imagine simply because of how I use it in all kinds of weather from soaking wet to hotter than any TarHeel should be! The only time it fails me is when I forget to stick a card in it or I get on a long incident and don't have a spare battery in my pocket. Since my first responsibility is to the fire department I've actually handed my camera to a stranger and told him or her to take whatever they think is good and I've left it on the tailboard of an engine more times than is reasonable. I can honestly say that my camera has been abused and it's never let me down. I don't use a case because it has to be ready to use the second I get out of my truck. I luv's my Sony!

Precisely!

I wonder if the Nicanonites hated it when it was Minolta, too.

I am thinking of picking up a simple, older camera, and keep the lens inventory to one or two lenses.
I just returned an older Pentax K10D as the viewfinder was was impossible to see in bright sunlight. Sadly, I was highly impressed with the IQ of that 10MP camera.

Not looking for all the bells and whistles of a modern camera (already have two). Just looking for good IQ.

Before I make a choice, I began to think that before I choose a camera, I might be wise to determine which brand has the best “kit” lens and/or prime lenses (35mm-50mm) as that is where I’d likely start (and might remain. Would primarily shoot street and landscapes with the camera.

Any thoughts on this camera picking methodology? And also, your thoughts on my lens question?

Not unusual; the thread tends to wander away from your masthead question; "Best Kit Lens?" As you probably know, most digital camera makers fit their products with a mid-range "kit zoom", usually of adequate ability to capture images of adequate quality for most neophytes....except Fujifilm. My photography subject matter is very similar to yours, and here was my "camera (lens) picking methodology":

From my camera journal:

When shopping ON A TIGHT BUDGET for a travel/street MILC; on April of 2014, I purchased a "used" Sony Alpha a6000 body + PZ 16-50mm OSS kit zoom for $400 from a local semi-pro owner. Then began collecting Sony E-mount prime lenses. With the right prime lens that (a6000) camera system captures almost anything that moves. Within a year or two, I became dissatisfied with the Sony APS-C zooms that I could afford.

On, October 23, 2016; purchased a near-new Fujifilm X-E2 with 18-55mm "kit zoom" on eBay, because the "Zony" 16-70mm f/4 midrange zoom was expensive and had a poor quality control record.
IMHO, the Fujifilm X-cameras are the easiest cross-over from the SLR/DSLR world, because the menu and controls seem so "familiar" -- later added a near-new 27mm "pancake" lens for every day carry, and recently a 35mm f/2 "Fujicron" to make the X-E2 a "Leica wannabe".

So far, my very enjoyable Fuji primes have cost me less that $200, apiece. Now, if I can just find a used 56mm f/1.2 for that price!

Guess there is nobody with one available?

Just my rookie thinkin', Ed ~ but, I'm wondering if people will begin holding onto this lens, now that Fujifilm is fitting their premium X-H and X-T series cameras with "In-body Image Stabilization", as that was the question mark in a number of minds about this otherwise splendid lens (that I have yet to acquire).
