I have the Rokinon 14mm f2.8 with the AE chip and use it on my Nikon D800. I am happy with it and recommend it as well.

Amazon has it new for $299.00 right now, and it says it is sold and shipped by Amazon, not someone else. Its $30.00 off and listed at $319.00 at B&H right now. Both prices are for new.

I ended up ordering it yesterday! Thank you so much!

Not sure where you've gotten this idea. A simple visual inspection shows Canon is adding the Rebel specification to just the T7i ... Maybe you meant the 77D has Rebel DNA? A review of the features in the two cameras wouldn't seem to justify a change for an owner of one of the two already and both stack up well with models just slightly more advanced, but older in their sensor and / or processor versions.

When i started with Canon, I moved from the Rebel line (T2i) to the 60D and it was a big move at the time. Many more features on the 60D plus it was the LCD on top. So yes, I agree they are different lines.

7DII is also a consideration. I used to use one for wildlife with the 100-400 and it produced some nice images. Good luck!

I have the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8, though it is a Canon mount. This one has the AE chip in it, so that, while it is still manual focus, it can handle auto aperture and auto shutter speed. This was a very inexpensive lens that does a very good job for what you want. I got one that worked just fine, but I have read a review or two that mentioned receiving defective units that had to be exchanged. I suppose that is par for the course for something that was so inexpensive.

The lens has a built in hood. If you are a person who likes to put a protective filter on the lens, you can forget that, with this lens. The front element is quite convex, which is one reason it has the built in lens hood.

Great info...thank you for taking the time!

Before I go out and buy one used from B&H or Adorama, I thought I’d ask UHH. Thinking about getting an inexpensive Nikon mount lens for star trails, night sky photography. I was considering Rokinon or Samyang 14mm 2.8. If anyone has experience with either of these or even has one for sale, let me know. Thanks!

I've got the rig you mention. I use the 300 2.8 with a Nikon 2.0 Teleconverter on my D500. Very sharp, fast focusing, and responsive for a 900mm equivalent. It is a bit heavy though. On the plus side though, it will fit in my camera bag attached to the camera. (Not a backpack, a Shoulder bag!). It is compact in length. A really amazing lens. Some claim it is one of Nikon's sharpest lenses. Did I say it was a bit heavy though?

Beautiful image, by the way!

The weight is my main concern. It’s heavier than the 200-500 I’ve been used to. Might be rough on long hikes! 😂

Considering the cost of the 300mm f2.8, you might find it interesting. Steve Perry does a great job in comparing the two.

Yes, he does!

I'm actually looking at the same lens and the two converters myself. Have not found a good web site yet to show the difference in sharpness. I did learn that the converters slow the focusing speed down about 20%. I'm considering purchasing both converters and then keeping the best of the two. Like you, I Would like to see in the field results, especially BIF...

No, but Steve Perry (Backcountry Gallery) did a video comparing the 300 f4 with converter vs the 200-500. It might be worth viewing.

I’ll take a look. Thanks.

I’d like to hear from someone who has experience shooting with this specific combo: Nikon D500, Nikkor 300mm 2.8 VRII with a TC14 or TC17. I’ve read some good things but would really like to see some shots. I mainly shoot wildlife/birds and I’ve been waiting and waiting for the 500mm 5.6 PF and it’s so far backlogged, it could be months! Thanks.
