It doesn't make any sense for Canon to incorporate the code to open Nikon .nef files in it's software, for instance. Of course they could if they wanted. It ain't secret code, uncrackable by anyone outside Nikon. Otherwise how could Adobe open raws from any and every new camera in their software with updates?

This is quite the same as being able to view QuickTime files on computers other than Macs. Just because Apple developed that particular file type does not mean that it looks any better in QuickTime Player than in VLC Lan, or that your Word document looks better in Microsoft Office.

It is true that different programs, after opening a raw file, have a different "starting point" of how they interpret the data to create a viewable file, but where it goes from there depends on you and your skill, and the capability of the controls in the raw editor.

And it is also true that a given manufacturer, knowing the problems and weakness with their own sensors and lenses, can use the EXIF data to correct for that. For instance, if a manufacturer knows the levels of vignetting and chromatic aberration of one of their lenses at a given aperture, and the distortion at a given focal length of a zoom lens, they can write code that will automatically correct for that when the program sees that data in the EXIF. Certainly that is useful, but it is not because they have secret data in the raw file that others cannot crack. DxO Optics Pro, for instance, makes downloadable correction modules for hundreds, if not thousands, of lens/body combinations, that are arguably better than what proprietary makes inculde in theirs.

I'm not knocking proprietary software, but we shouldn't propagate myths here.

I'm not arguing with any one, but in a way you have in a way validated the OP's premise. Why would Canon, Nikon, Sony, or any manufacturer write for another? Their software is designed for their camera. They know what the design is capable of and it's short comings so they are going to get the most out of it and their lenses. It would be impractical for each software manufacture to build each camera model into their software. On the other hand if the camera manufacturers gave you software with all the bells and whistles of 3rd party software, I doubt that the camera you purchased wouldn't show a significant increase to cover that free software for it. For me a good example was the Nikon tether software. Lightroom and all the other 3rd party software just did not work as well or they had a work around.

I'm not knocking 3rd party software. I'm impressed at some of the things they do with my raw files, but, my Nikon software comes the closest to what "I" was trying to capture. I don't get into the artistic side of photography as I suck at it, so I stick to the technical side.

I don't understand the "myth" part. These are all technical aspects. To some they are worth looking into, to others not so much.

Well, if what everyone is saying about non proprietary camera software is true, "one size fits all". Then why can't I open Canon Raw files in Nikon software? Can you open Nikon Raw in Canon's software? Think about it. Even opening your XYZ camera raw file in what ever 3rd party software will give you different results, whether you use the software out of the box or strip out every preset you can find.

The OP is not saying as far as I can tell, that 3rd party is deficient, but that "He" gets better results by doing his RAW processing with the camera software before taking it into 3rd party software for what ever reason. I came to the same conclusion years ago. For general viewing on the monitor or posting on social media it is not as important. If you are printing, it does make a difference, at least for me it does, and significantly. But, that is only my conclusion.

If I recall correctly, Affinity, NiC, Frantz, apply very little tone mapping. They allow you to process it to taste after it is compiled. Haven't got my Main computer reloaded yet so I may be wrong, but that was my recollection.

Ron, thank you for taking the time to visit this thread and for your interesting and welcome comments.

I have been researching and talking to several professionals about all this including an electronic engineer that deals with computer and programs, not necessarily related to photography. He also told me that if I wanted the best in the file when printing I had to use the proprietary software made by the camera manufacturer. Some of the professional photographers I talked to had no idea while one in specific, a wedding photographer, told me that in the monitor of my computer ALL files regardless of editor will look great. He is right.
When it comes to show his clients the best that he can offer he works with Capture NX2, an excellent software that is no longer available or supported by Nikon. As you know, that program has been replaced by Nikon NX-D that incorporates many of the features of Capture NX2.

When I talked to the Chief Technician at the professional color lab it was when I really understood what the camera manufacturer does. The software is designed to work the RAW data recognizing the file extension and that same file extension is recognized by ALL other RAW editors but the secrets of developing the true colors of the camera is only mastered by the software made for the camera by its manufacturer. As I said, landscapes are not that critical but when it comes to skin colors it does matter.

I downloaded Capture NX-D and Olympus Workspace to use as the main editor for my RAW data from those cameras. Now Affinity Photo or Photoshop will be what I will use for further refinements on those files once converted to TIFF.
The technician told me during our conversation that many photographers doing weddings and using other softwares have complained to him that their prints do not have accurate skin colors and he has gone with them through all that we have discussed so that they can improve on their photography. One thing is to look at the image in the monitor and another to print it. For internet use ALL editors will do an excellent job.

Once again, thank you for your interesting comments.

Glad I could offer some of my insights and findings into your quest for knowledge.

You indicate that you are mostly interested in skin tone, but this also carries over into landscape, astro, and BW conversions more so than most folks are aware of. Keep digging and poking around under the hood of various 2nd party soft ware you will find a lot more info that will help you along. I used to be impressed by the way programs would, shall I say "interpret" my RAW files, until one day I wondered why so many variations? A good proof of this is to bring in a BW negative into each software program you have and look for the variations. Then strip out all of the presets of each program and do it again.

Glad you went through the trouble to seek an answer. If you do talk to Nikon, you will receive the same information, and if you are lucky enough to get the right person at Nikon, a lot more. I still use Capture NX2 for all my raw files before they go to any software for further tweaking (dodge, burn, stacking, and an occasional layer). "BUT", the software is stripped out of any presets, otherwise it will change the appearance of the image processed by the camera's PP software. It is still going to change it because it is a compromise to work for All cameras and their files.

I also use NXi at times, but have yet to find the high pass filter in it and still learning it's capabilities. The new version is faster, but have yet to print with it. I have several Epson 9000 and 9600 printers so I can print quite large, and color and detail are important. I also have my monitors profiled for morning light, bright light, and evening room light. Anal, but it does make a difference.

Thanks for the links and comments, Mike. It looks like there's all sorts of potential in these techniques. I'll be happy if I can get files with low noise, strong details and strong colours that'll take lots of pushing and pulling in PP - which is what the best files from the best cameras are like. You and others are making Affinity sound irresistible .

Well, it is fully functional for 30 days with "no" restrictions.

I,m sure you have all read the headlines that camera sales are dropping and phone cameras are booming,it will be nice that the phone owners can snatch that photo that otherwise would have been missed and sure they can blur backgrounds and give portrait like results etc,but my DSLR and more recently my coolpix p7000 won't be being replaced by a phone camera any time soon.
Are you hanging up your DSLR,s members ?

Could it be that folks are just satisfied with the gear they have?
New bells, fan-dangles, whistles might be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but how many use them or take the time to know how to use them "or" have a use for them?. I have friends that have to have the latest and greatest, but they shoot full auto. They use the camera as it came out of the box, duhhh. But they have the latest for what I have to assume is bragging rights and to look impressive. They do better snaps with their phones than their cameras.
Plus, if you think about it, your always getting up grade offers from your phone service in easy payments and an extended service plan. Do you use all that junk on the phone? I don't, I just want a phone. Do I use a phone camera, yes when crawling under a building or through an attic to document something for a building inspector or ins co. Sure beats taking the chance and hassle of dragging a camera with me.

Thanks for the suggestion, Ron. I had PhotoPlus (also from Serif) a while back and was aware of its various limitations, but it sounds like Affinity is in the same league as Ps and the like.

R.G.
Affinity can do just about anything PS can, but it is much more user intuitive for me. I do my raw in NX 2 and NX D before any other program touches it. I've found that Affinity will (after stripping out all the presets) give me the closest representation of my Raw image work done in Nikon software. It seems to give me a slightly finer detail than the Nikon software. You have to pixel peep, but this might be that it is a consistently updated software and is more capable of using the computer hardware better, to portray the results. Unlike other applications, it is not hampered by being stripped out as some are. I got it when it was still a Windows Beta, and have yet to have to pay for an update. The new Consumer Beta is even faster and I eagerly await the final.

I recently did a 29 frame horizontal pano which none of the other software was able to stitch, in less than 2 min with only one very slight blemish, (had to pixel peep again to find it) and I have a 10 year old machine running 10 internal HD's plus externals. Stacking, Focus merge, HDR, are all just as fast and reliable.

Hi. I'm hoping to find a simple way to use median or average blending to combine multiple exposures. I'm hoping I don't have to buy a whole editor just to get that feature, but if it wasn't silly money I would consider it. I already have the Nik collection but I'm not familiar with it as yet and I wouldn't even know where to start looking for that feature. If all else fails I would be willing to buy something like On1 which isn't too expensive and has other features that I would find useful, but I'm hoping to find a cheaper and simpler option.

I've read a little about ImageMagic and it sounded very interesting but haven't downloaded it yet so I haven't a clue how user-friendly it is. I suspect that Ps Elements has that feature but my experience of Elements is that whenever you want to do something useful with it, it takes a drop to 8 bit processing - which I don't care for.

Median blending sounded more interesting than average blending, but if I found a simple way to do average blending that didn't involve too much expense or too much of a learning curve I would consider that.

I would be very grateful for your thoughts, suggestions and/or experiences with that feature. My main editor is Lightroom 6.

Look at Affinity Photo. Less expensive than ON1 and faster. The new Beta is even faster.

If you go to some of the CAD sites, you can find links to hundreds of different textures for free. Some have a charge, but snooping around enough you will find it or similar, for free.

Yes, I know that a lot of people say "Sierras" rather than "Sierra." A lot of people don't know when to use capitalization. A lot of people confuse "lose" with "loose." All of those errors are much more common than they used to be, for wh**ever reason.

Your statement that some police overlook law breaking by those whom they have decided are "law abiding citizens" is true, unfortunately, and that is a big problem. That statement is also extraordinarily political, since who is and who is not "law abiding" has nothing to do with who is actually abiding by the law, as you made very clear. Where the law in arbitrarily and unequally applied, there is no law. The attitude you are expressing is undermining the rule of law, and that is placing us all at greater risk.

They don't overlook breaking the law. In these remote areas there are so many places they can be at once. All they are saying is that "YOU" had best be prepared to protect your self until help arrives. If you should be out in the wilderness, they won't be there till it is too late. Common Sense.

I believe that you do not see your own politics as political. Only those disagreeing with you are "being political," I suppose, although I have scrupulously avoided making any political statements whatsoever.

What politics??????

People with whom you identify are "law abiding" whether or not they are breaking the law, and you think it is fine if law enforcement officers share that bizarre view of the law. People with whom you identify are not being political, no matter what statements they make.

I'm not sure what you are saying. Unless you are a felon, mentally challenged, or for some other reason, you are allowed to have a legal firearm.

I have not recommended that people do not recommend standing up for themselves, or their loved ones. I haven't made any argument against firearms, either.

Not directly, but the implication is there.

Why shoot snakes? There is no reason to be shooting snakes. Again, I am questioning the judgement of people who have been posting absurd ideas like that, and I am saying that it is people who are armed along with being fearful, suspicious and ignorant who are the greatest risk to all of us.

Because not all Rattlers will back off or let you back off.

How do I protect myself when out taking photographs? When I am on the trail I try to identify and avoid people like you. If I saw you shooting a protected animal, or shooting recklessly or in a prohibited area, or brandishing a weapon to threaten or intimidate others, I would not hesitate to report you.

Wow, that is getting pretty lame. What the hell makes you think I would be shooting protected animals or shooting in a protected area? What makes you think I would be brandishing a weapon to threaten or intimidate others? What makes you think I'm some Citified Yahoo that goes around shooting at anything and everything? If you did come across me, you would never know if I had a weapon or not. All you would see is an older duffer lugging a bunch of packing gear. I would also make damn sure to keep away from you or anyone else when I'm out. I'm out there to get away from people.

Your reading things into me that you know nothing about. Your just making your own assumptions.

I'd go easy on the coffee and sugar, too.

Why? Kept me going for Seventy plus years.
