I recently went on a daytime photo excursion with a co-worker who also enjoys photography. He has eye for, and enjoys black and white photography, and likes to photograph trucks(passenger and semis. I was just trying to come up with an interesting place to go next time, where there would be lots of trucks(last time we went to the Pismo Beach, CA Monarch Butterfly Grove). When I Googled for a possible location idea, all it came up with is Budget, UHaul, rental places, and yes I know we could go to car lots, but was hoping to come up with a more interesting idea than that. Anybody have any location ideas?
Thank you,
PhotoNat

find a local or short drive to your nearest truck stop.

Louisville Kentucky during the end of March. Largest Truck show in the Nation. Otherwise go to your local truck dealers and ask them if you can photograph some new trucks.

The areas around major truck stops can be a good place for taking pictures different types of semi trucks. They won't likely be clean and ready for show in this environment, though. Major highway truck stops tend to be busiest later in the day on Saturdays, or early on Sunday mornings. This is because many businesses they deliver to are closed on Sundays, so they are not in a hurry to get where they are going. I learned this years ago when I lived in a highway town with three large truck stops.

I don't know about "interesting", but you find trucks at loading docks, truck scales
(the private ones, not the manditory ones operated by the CHP), truck stops (the
biggest chain is Truck Stops of America), and cardlock (private issue credit card)
fueling sites.

Each fueling network (CFN, Pacific Pride, SC Fuels, etc) has a map on-line of all of
its locations (some are unattended: nothing there but a card reader and dispensers).
The biggest concentraiton of cardlock sites in the world is in Barstow, CA.

Truck stops tend to be a little grungy (OK, more than a little!), but some of the
roadside cafes patronized by truckers are nice. And the parking lots are less
busy--your friend might be able to take photos without being run over.

Some interesting places ot take photos in central CA: the Pinnacles National Park
(between King City and Hollister -- two entrances with no roads in between),
Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park (in Felton, near Santa Cruz), Wilder Ranch
State Park (a few miles N. of Santa Cruz), East Pennisula Open Space District
(off Skyline Blvd between Hwy 9 and SF), and Black Diamond State Park
(near Antioch in North Bay -- coal mines from the 1880s and underground visitor's
center in a sand mine open on weekends). And there's another Monarch butterfly
winter-over spot at Natural Bridges S.P. in Santa Cruz (otherwise nothing much to
see -- the natural bridges washed away a while ago).

I think you'd have the most interesting variety of photo subjects at Wilder Ranch S.P.:
Victorian house, horse barn, dairy barn, old adobe, vegetable garden, horses, goats,
sheep, chickens, barn cat, monterey cypress, corral and cabin, old farm equipment,
and miles of hiking trails. Day use only. Pay to park or park on highway like the
locals do. On weekends in the summer there are hayrides for kids. Check webs site
for current information.

Farms are another place where you migth see trucks and farm equipment--but not this
time of year.

BTW, here's a link to a painting your friend might enjoy:

Just a thought.

Check out San Joaquin Valley. Farming trucks run up and down that Interstate like crazy. Below Fresno and North of Tehachapi. Maybe go as far south as Barstow if you feel like traveling that far south.

Another choice is to check out WWW.ATHS.COM
These are the people who collect big trucks.
See where they are having shows this year.
The 2017 national show in Des Moines had 1200 plus trucks of all ages and sizes.

You might take a drive to Quartzsite AZ sometime during swap-meet times there are lots of trucks/rvs etc. also a drive out of town along the interstate (any interstate) the rest stops.

California has many beautiful roads with sweeping bends and gorgeous hills that trucks use all the time. Find a good vantage point and spend an hour getting various shots of trucks in action.

I did a photo shoot at a car/truck junk yard. Lot's of interesting shapes and stories. Many of the yards wouldn't let me in as they were concerned that I was from an insurance company, trying to get photos for a specific claim. The one that did let me in said I could be there for 30 minutes - so I worked fast.

Junk Yards. Esp older ones.Sometimes they let wander around. Maybe a little tip would help. Look around out in the country. Most country folk will let you wander around if you ask. I personally like older trucks. You can find all the new ones you want at the dealers and on the Interstate.Have fun!
