Welcome to Ugly Hedgehog's very first Photography Contest. This will be a community run Bi-Monthly contest, open to all members of Ugly Hedgehog.

The rules will be relatively simple.
1. Entry to have been taken in the last month unless otherwise specified by the contest host (please do not go thru your achieves).
2. Theme will be picked by the Contest Host.
3. Contest will run for 2 weeks, after which the Contest Host will pick the winner.
4. You may enter up to 3 photos per contest.
5. The entry must be your own work.
6. Entries to be uploaded directly by entrants to the Contest Thread.
7. Contest Host will be determined by the previous Contest.
8. New rules may be added as the Bi-Monthly Contest grows and morphs.

I do hope that the Contest Hosts will provide feedback as to why they picked the entry that they did, but please remember this is for fun. I have volunteered to manage the contest overall, that does not mean I will judge entries (unless I am the Contest Host that week), or sway judging.

So with that, here is the first challenge:
Theme: Your City/Neighborhood
Due: October 30, 2011
Winner will be selected by: November 4th

Please post your entries in this thread for consideration.
Good Luck and get there and shot something!

Living in the Pacific Northwest can provide some pretty dramatic skies when the rain gives way to the sunshine on the dark clouds.
This is of my neighbor's cows in the pasture next to mine.

OK, not to start any trouble or anything, but all I can think of is:
How did you all feel when the change happened from film to digital??
Honestly I was in college then for film and we all hated it. Took all of my classmates quite a while to even consider digital, an art form!!!! I had to re-think it as a separate art form... Then I was OK. We just need to understand art covers a lot of ground and each IS different than the other....... But all is worthy.....
Let's just enjoy the ride............. and look at each others art and appreciate it for what it is!

First, great shots every one! The scenery in the middle of the country is not as spectacular, but as someone once said every state has its own beauty. So with that in mind, here are some of my water shots..

Being married to a Hawkeye, I have always thought Iowa is beautiful, but you just reminded me how beautiful it is with your photos! Great job!

These are sights from my neck of the woods: New Mexico

1. A patio at an open-air market in Albuquerque lined with hanging chili ristras, a common sight this time of year.

2. The Sandia Mountains, the eastern boundary of the city, dusted with the first snow of the season.

3. One of the red cliffs in Indian Reservation country, to the north and west of Albuquerque.

Just beautiful!

Photographs are like fine cigars. There are certain things which must be there...composition, exposure, focus in order for the photograph to be acceptable. Fine cigars have to be hand made with long filler, draw easily, and burn evenly, the rest is a matter of taste.

For someone to say a photo is bad because it's not in the style they care for, is irresponsible. If the technical attributes are correct, then it's a good photo, no matter who objects.

I think we should continue this discussion over a fine cigar....it always seems to make things better.

Bravo! I am an antique photographer....I use some of the most advanced digital gear made. I've never shot an image in Auto Anything. Strictly Manual RAW. Lots of younger folks look at my stuff sometimes and ask what program did you use...how did you do that...I use the original program...my brain.
When I was a young Navy photographer I'd have some type of problem and be blaming it on something with the camera...my old Chief would say..."ain't nothing wrong with the camera except that loose screw three inches behind the viewfinder..."

Sad!!! Only because I had finally gotten a Canon EOS, and had accumulated a lot of "stuff" for it. Then, along comes digital. lol I had gone through numerous types of cameras, including a couple of range finders, and I even had a Chinon, very nice camera, but it used screwmount lenses. But, long story short, I have adapted very well. Frankly, the co$t of film and processing was making it an expensive hobby. I have had several P&S digitals, and loved the concept of seeing your pics immediately. (Im not a very patient person...lol) I just got my first dSLR, and am thrilled!
